Danny Welbeck | Arsenal player

I have to be honest, despite his adrenaline filled hectic first 10 minutes, it was a very typical Welbeck performance. Good work rate, some ok touches but didn't look particularly dangerous. Hopefully the hysteria can start to die down somewhat. I don't think there's much to fear from him.

Considering he has only been training with the club a few days I was happy enough with the debut. Unlucky not to score a goal but I think he will improve.

There was no need to dink that though. Its something we've seen plenty of times. Go for the elaborate instead of just hitting it low and into the net, you know, the easier option.

Don't get me wrong, he should've scored, and he's not nearly as good a striker as Cole, but I can see this thread, plus twitter/commentary making a big deal of every missed chance in the same way Andy had that Hoddle crafted Albatros round his neck for a few seasons. Better players have worse efforts than that.

We let Chicarito and Welbeck go and brought in Falcao and promoted Wilson. I think we will know pretty soon how much of an upgrade we have made.

Typically average perofmrnace from Danny. Had the potential and did do some great things, then missed a few key chances and ruined a few attacks.

Yeah I did, if you look through my posts I've probably stated a few times over the years he'll be the next Thierry Henry

Course you have, don't worry, I believe you ;)

Maybe another Eduardo at best. Don't get those expectations up too much, I've been watching him for years and today's performance was a very typical one.

Well, yeah, that's inevitable. A player who divides opinion so much, and the main debate around him for the last four years being his lack of proficiency and cool in front of goal, naturally the main focus will be on chances like that, because the whole debate around Welbeck right now is whether he can be the 20-30 goal a season striker people think he will/won't be.

To be fair though, his first chance in the Arsenal shirt and it was relatively out of the blue, but he definitely should've drilled it home, not gone for his usual pretty dink.

I haven't seen enough of him to form any solid opinion as to how good he will become. For the kind of money we've paid even if he doesn't become top class I'd be happy with him being a backup striker for us.

I do think he will improve under us though, once he builds up a better understanding with the players around him

That is why I don't get the angst. I'd rather Danny has stayed, as I like him, I think hes a reasonable striker, and the local connection is important to the club.

But he played well today in terms of Danny Welbeck performances, that is what he gives, and Van Gaal thinks Wilson can offer more. And I think he's right.

That's fair. I believe that's the best you can hope for from him. In the long term I see him being a squad player for your lot. He's not a bad player, a decent one, but no more than that. Today was a very typical performance so best get used to it. Has promise but fails to build on it all too often.

Think he's at the stage in his career where he needs to push on, he has great motivation right now and for us he will get plenty of chances to score. It is now up to him to build on that and be more efficient in the final third. Very unlucky not to score today.

Did he just get a standing ovation for that performance?
You think we won't be giving standing ovations to our multiple new signings tomorrow, whatever the performance?

It was a nicely executed chip which came back off the inside of the post. Hardly the worst shot of all time.

It's pretty strange. I noticed it on the BBC text for this game and the England game, quite a lot of strange jibes at Welbeck, the sort that much more maligned footballers don't seem to get on social media.

The reaction to us selling him really was strange. It's like we were selling a top class player or a starter for us, hell Welbeck wasn't even the first back up pretty much. We replaced him with one of the very best strikers in the world, and yet here was such a big outcry at the whole deal. Weird.

well someone posted the media's having their cake and eating it too logic

If united are too compete again, they got to spend big, as the youngsters are not good enough

United spend 144M, they have sold their soul, and they are not giving youth a chance

I thought Danny, on a whole, apart from the missed chance that will be talked about forever, did alright, to be honest. Don't think he'll have as tougher game this season, coming up against Kompany, who I thought was terrific today.

Only his first game for Arsenal. He still has to get used to the team, and vice versa. I would like to see him peel off to the left flank more, though, especially when Ozil cuts in, which would allow him to run at defenders and cut in on his right foot.
