He's too much of a Jack of all trade really. I mean, he's useless on the wings, and yet when he plays upfront, either he is not pacey enough (surprising cos i thought he's one of the fastest players around when he first came on), or his finishing lets him down. He has so much raw talent but he's got to work on his game real hard to have a chance of holding down a regular place. I wish he would be more cliniical and cut down on the unnecessary holding of the ball too long.... Till then, he will only be a squad player.

Good experience for him to play wide

This, will help his development. I also think part of the reason Welbeck was started today was because Ferguson had planned to make this a game where he starts.

I'm sure Ferguson plans ahead and works out which teams players will be started against to allow each of our young players games.

I thought it was a daft decision to start him yesterday if I'm honest. We all know he can do a job there but he's never excellent in that position. It's especially daft when we have Nani on the bench.

It was only a minor contribution but he had a nice little bit of play centrally before feeding the ball to Valencia who set up RvP's first.

Barely worth mentioning but it's the sort of thing I like having him in the team for. He gets involved and can help set up attacks.

he doesn't play the position well at all. doesn't check back properly. i mean he runs back but doesn't defend like a winger would. that's because he's a striker

In all fairness he was good on the wings for Sunderland, but he had room to operate on the counterattack.

Against the packed defenses which United faces week in and week out, the close control, width, and technique of a true winger like Nani or Young is needed.

Welbeck could be a decent winger for most Premiership clubs, but for United the position he needs to play is at striker.

How many times has he actually played on the wing as part of a front 3, and not in a 4-4-2? I'm guessing there's been a few times before which I can't remember, because to judge his ability in that position based on yesterdays match, where most players registered somewhere on the gash scale, seems a little unfair.

I thought he was class last night, came on and really stepped up. That shot when he hit the post was brilliant forward play, contrary to what Andy Townsend thinks.

I thought that he changed the game when came on, he made things happen by getting about. However, I do agree, in part, that is was a bad miss. His control was slightly poor and the ball popped up in the air, then he tried to finish with the outside of his strong right foot, when a left foot shot would have be a straight forward, laces through the ball, goal.

One touch, bang, technique was spot on. It was from a mishit cross. He did lace it too, he had no time to think he was being closed down from the right hand side.

First touch wasn't spectacular but he adjusted really well on it, pure instinctive forward play and there was little else he could have done in that situation.

Ill give it you that it was a hard ball to control but the fact remains that if he had a left foot that he was confident to use - it was a goal.

He's a funny player to watch. He gives (to me) the impressed that he wonders around not really knowing whats he's doing, but then suddenly he's in a goal scoring position. He could've had a hatrick with a bit of luck, that doesnt sound like someone who doesnt know what they're doing - it must be a kind of ploy to put the defenders off :smirk:

Not really he would have to adjust his whole body position first and I don't think he was confident the ball was coming to him until late, otherwise he might have attacked the ball and indeed gone with his left. Nothing to do with a lack of confidence, Welbeck doesn't lack any confidence. The ball was more less where he was positioned, he would have had to drop back a bit towards the Ukrainian defender and open his body up and the best angle of the finish would have sent the ball to the opposite corner and it's very possible the defender could had blocked it then.

Hes a player who onfront of our noses at the highest level continues to learn and develop, hes not a winger but being played there continues his education. Not sure why people cant see this. Im delighted with him personally.

Changed the dynamic of the england side when he came on last night.. he's a young lad who will need to improve the clinical finishing side of his game and will have shite games inevitably, but how some can't see that this kid has far too much potential to be just a squad player is beyond me.

Learning his trade whilst watching and partnering the likes of Rooney and RVP is going to reap benefit... by 2014, he's going to be a beast.

He's a young Englishman that can dribble and run with the ball.

More players like him should be picked. It's so easy it's painfull.

Remember Woy, taking off Welbs against Italy ? His biggest mistake he could make, that day.

Still in quite young age but already has an impact on International team. Just give him more time in games and England will be on the rise, again.

He's been good today but we could do without the diving. Last thing we want is for him to get a reputation.

Been very bright. I have no issue with the dive. In fact I always encourage it when the time is right.

He did good

Dont really consider it a dive. I'd have more of a problem with keepers coming out like that knowing they dont need to get the ball and are allowed slight contact making the angle impossible to score from even if they somehow keep their balance.

He's played the wide striker role very well, something I've never had a problem with when he's picked there. More threatening than he usually is from that position

I wouldn't call face planting that hard a dive at all.
Shows to me that he doesn't have the vision or the positional play that Rooney has when playing behind Danny himself. Much better holding the ball up leading the line.

Did ok today, just needs to be a bit more decisive and less casual in and around the box. Wasnt a penalty

Curious games from Welbeck, the guy must be the best defensive striker in the business; made more tackles than anyone else on our team. I noticed in his previous games this season, where he played out wide, he was essentially a defensive winger in those games. Lots of tackles and ball retention but little effective attacking threat.

Well it's his discipline that affects him, he was in a deeper role today with Hernandez and on the wing he tracks back properly too. When he's paired with Rooney in behind him he's a completely different beast. He has a tremendous appetite for the game, Rooney wasn't a renowned finisher at Everton despite his great youth level record. Obviously he was different kettle of fish but Welbeck has great finishes in him (Derby in the Cup, Stoke at home all those years back, Ukraine etc.), just needs that consistency and maturity.

If he scored that amazing scissors kick

All around play was better than that of Hernandez, but due to him getting a goal and an assist you can't really rate him as good as Hernandez today.
I just want him to get a goal, to raise his confidence, because his overall play on and off the ball is fantastic, love the lad.

He was very much involved in the early stages, looked a threat every time. Only thing i didn't like was his dive to win the penalty, he shouldn't be doing that, none of our players should be doing that.
Performance wise, he did well, deserved a goal. He should get a goal, which he deserves now for some time.
