:nono: I just don't get this. Last night I was willing your boys on and was genuinely gutted when you lost. I'd have been the same for the Scots, Welsh or Northern Irish.

Why the feck does everyone hate the English?

Best team in the British Isles is why. I have supported England every international tournament, as none of the other nations usually make it.

Of course he meant it, you could see by his look, he immediately turned around to see if it's going in.

To be honest, if the ball hits your heel (assuming you feel the impact), you are always going to look in that direction. i.e. If I'm blind-folded and someone throws a ball softly into my heel, I'll know the ball went backwards off my heel.

He's hardly going to keep looking towards the centre of the park, in the direction of Hart, when the ball hits him where it did.

Looks intention because of the way he brings directs his foot to where the ball is going.

The contact isn't exactly where you'd hit it if you could choose where to hit it, but that's expected with the amount of time he had, also, he doesn't need a perfect connection to get the ball into the next from there. Rooney half-shinned his City goal, didn't he?

Its obvious he meant it. Really irritates me that people question goals like that when theres only one option. He wanted to get something on it and flick it towards that side of the goal and he chose to do something he was comfortable with

People question it because he's a youth product and didn't cost 20 million. He meant it, no question. Delighted for him.

Can't believe people not being sure on this one. Course it was intentional, he hits it, even if gently and that's not an indicator of a 'shite touch'.

As somenone said, had Ibrahimovic done this today, it would have been 'masterpiece' 'touch of God' etc.

 @ "he didn't mean it". Fack off.

Even Andy Townsend has just swallowed his own words and said he did.

It looked awkward because the ball bounced up so high. Brilliant finish.

You some up perfectly why with this quote.

Didn't mean it? Of course he fecking meant it. He was never trying to trap that ball.. It was a brilliant piece of improvisation..

Every sign he is going to be a wonderful player in the future. This comp may be a little early but it will make him as a player.

Most United fans should know that he meant it, we watch him so often that we know he can do that without any trouble. So many general England fans though seem to think he's just a trier with a bit of pace, seemingly not realising that he's a fecking good footballer first and foremost.

Anyone who's ever played Football with an ounce of imagination or flair will know he meant that.

I literally have no words for you if you looked at that movement, that swivel, and came away with the deduction that it was unintentional.

Of course he meant it. I don't think it came off the way he tried to. He was probably trying to use the inside of his foot to steer the ball but it went of his heel instead. Not a big miscalculation and the result was as promised. That's only my guess though. He might have tried all along to use his heel. That's just a bigger risk to make and harder to steer the ball that way.

Who's saying he didn't mean it anyway? Gone 2 pages back and I'm not sure what statement people are reacting to.

Agreed, he made no attempt to point his toe one way or the other to try to kick the ball as it went by, or flick his foot at the ball, as you would see if it was a missed attempt at a kick.

I don't like the English for a few different reasons. Most people here like them despite them playing poor football. I've got no affiliation to the country and they have a good mix of Liverpool, Chelsea and City players to name a few. For my point of view they generally don't provide exiting or enjoying football and it's therefor up to the opponent to make the game watchable. The sooner they are not the bigger the likelihood of a good football match.
If they do deliver a good match I won't complain. I won't root for a Carroll goal though.

great goal from danny boy people can wank about that cross but that finish was something else!!!

the cross was horrible for a striker to work with since it was behind him and off the ground. He literally could only do what he did with it or else it was a cheap give away of possession. Credit to Walcott for the run though but 95% of the time nothing comes of that cross.

He finished my argument tonight in a pub.

About 5 seconds before the goal, I was saying "he doesn't look like he wants to score tonight".

Err...

Was a quality finish, and I think he meant it. Had the look of someone who meant it when he was celebrating at least.

Hopefully the guy Rooney partners next game. Would hate the big striker short striker thing to happen. Great instinctive finish yesterday.

Looked much better in a 4-4-2 rather than leading the line all by himself. Made a few good runs and was a great finish.

Even Hansen knew he meant, tremendous speed of thought and dexterity to get something on it, hope he starts with Rooney against Ukraine.

A year ago there was a thread comparing Welbeck & Sturridge.
I don't like pie.
Not that i never rated Welbeck before, i think Sturridge needs better manager.
Well done Welbeck.

Well done Welbeck.

And perhaps a couple million of neuron cells too...

I've been asking myself just why Danny is so underrated in the media and general football audience. He pretty much displaced Hernandez in the United team last season FFS!

Is he downplayed because he just slipped on to the scene without a big money transfer story? Or can people simply not appreciate his skills and touch, not being used to it by an English player?

I've no idea, it's genuinely baffling.

Thing is that many foreign stars arrive in England when they re complete players after completing their development elsewhere. On the other hand the a developing player like Welbeck has been scrunitized by the media for years and people may still remember certain flaws in his game.

I for one up to a year ago or so was not so convinced by Welbeck, but now I happily admit that I was wrong - but other people may not admit it.

To be fair, as far as the English broadsheets are concerned he's been getting a lot of praise recently. It seems to have taken a run of games for England to get noticed though.

The real mystery for me has been the United fans who took so long to appreciate him. Some still don't. When was the last time you heard a young lad talking about leading the line for Manchester United and England in a mancunian accent? He should be a frigging hero for United fans, not the source of so much begrudgery.

It reminds me of a comment made about Chelsea looking for a manager - James Ducker i think it was, said that if Di Matteo had won the CL with another team he d be top on Chelsea's list for the post of manager. (Eventually they gave him the job but it seems that initially Abramovic was not so convinced about RDM)

The same can be applied to a section of Mu fans - if Welbeck played for another team - I m sure he d high in muppet lists over here

Yeah Welbeck goes against the type of people who prefer transfers over football. I'm not kidding I think there is actually people like that in football nowadays. Who find the "banter" of joking about transfers as more exciting than football itself. Welbeck has broken through the team slowly but surely, never quite putting together spectacular world class performances but showing just how good at football he is.

There is 100% some posters here who would like him more if he cost 15 million from Lille.

In Italy sales of papers that are focused mainly on football peak during summer with the main reason being transfer stories.

No wonder we get all that rubbish gossip all the time on the papers ...

I also don't think the newspapers see him as a headline maker. For a start he's clearly a sensible lad off the pitch, and his interviews are pretty much the norm. So when he scores the winning goal like last night, I'd bet they'd find something else to highlight. I haven't seen the papers today but I'd be surprised if the back pages were plastered with 'Danny Boy' or something. It will probably be about Walcott's impact.
