Danny Welbeck | 2011-14 Performances

A gunner supporting mate of mine said the other day;

Robin Van Persie is only injury free because he's playing for a new contract... Or a transfer..

These days i'd get a bit apprehensive when someone finally gets their big step up contract. Not only is Welbeck a local lad but he will genuinely give his all for the club whatever wage he is on. I don't think we will see any effect on his work rate or any of those problems that you may see with another 'star' type of player.

I am delighted the lad is doing so well.

Hopefully no drama this time.

Really need to tie down Danny for long term.He is the future.

Danny is going to become one of my favourite players, I can tell. I love the way he plays the game.

Entirely expected though. De Jong was brought on to chuck his weight about.

That was where according to Fergie, Welbeck actually committed the foul wasn't it. Could be wrong in my rage though.

I'm amazed at how he's improved. Only last year he seemed like a kid with a hopelessly wild first touch. Seems very settled with the ball now while keeping an active spark, and plenty of running. One of the next generation I'm going to really enjoy watching develop.

Might be a bit knee-jerk but he feels like a sunny day player to me. He never ups his performance to add that little something extra when we are struggling. Was absolutely invisible after coming on today, except for getting clattered by De Jong.

As was just about every other player in red.

Rooney didnt have a good day at the office but put in a shift, made himself available for the ball and tracked back. Carrick was also good and I think Nani was decent (why on earth was he taken off before Giggs).

In general I dont think Welbeck does enough to give us an extra dimension when things arent working well. He certainly isnt an impact sub.

He would probably have had more of an impact if we had attacked with some impetus, or purpose if you will. We were absolutely toothless from the halfway line and up.

Generally I agree that Hernandez is much more suitable as an impact sub however, but he probably wouldn't have done much today as he would've counted himself lucky to get a touch on the ball.

Yeah agree with that.

Welbeck was the right person to come on because Rooney needed help getting the ball to stick upfront, it just kept coming back because he was so isolated. Welbeck is far better at holding the ball that Hernandez and has a better first touch, so was more suited to the type of game we were playing.

Hernandez is more of a threat in behind but we hardly played any through balls all night, so not sure what he could have latched onto. Given the necessity for directness in our passing I don't think Hernandez would have had a chance of holding onto it, Kompany would have tackled him in a second, or beat him in the air. Whereas with Danny he can always control it or lay it off to Rooney.

Should have started. His partnership with Rooney has been on fire recently, strange decision to break it up.

got clattered by De Jong->keeps playing->poor performance->leaves stadium foot in plastic cast

any logical flow to these events?

also he got a late winner against Arsenal at the Emirates, so you are wrong that he 'never' does it.

I think Fergie's analysis on Rooney is quite telling. He took him off one time because he said Wayne's game suffers when the game is played at a casual pace. Need I say more?

Should have started last night. He deserved it after his performance against Everton and I was a strong advocater of 4-4-2 for us last night.

Fairly sure he was instrumental in us turning the game around just last week. Before the defence through it away at least.

He's had an impact as a sub a few times. Made a huge difference in Bilbao. Turned the game against Norwich at OT. That's just the first two that spring to mind. I'm sure there are others.

Bit of a stupid comment really. Especially when you consider he actually looked sharp last night, right up until that cnut De Jong took him out.

I was one that advocated dropping him in favour of an extra midfielder (though Park wasn't in my thinking) but we looked much better with him on, his arrival probably had more impact than that of Valencia. Of course looking better than the previous hour or so wouldn't be hard, but credit to him all the same.

Just been chatting to a blue in my office who said he was delighted when he saw Welbeck wasn't in the starting eleven.

Shame some of our own fans still don't appreciate him.

Improved our play until de Jong took him out. Hopefully the injury isn't too serious.

Bruised up foot. Initially there were concerns of him having a fracture but thankfully that's not the case.
