maybe, but sometimes you see the potential quality and take a punt on it. For us, take Manucho, Obertan, Macheda, Morrison, Pogba etc. We saw / see something and we hope to develop on it.

It could work and they end up brilliant or they domn't quite develop on in the way we'd like, like Obertan, Manucho. Hopefully, Morrison, Pogba and Macheda will. Each have talent, each have potential - they could be excellent or they could be footnotes never to be mentioned again in a few years.

Sir Alex said:
"I remember going to see Van Persie play for Feyenoord reserves, way, way back," Ferguson told skysports.com.

"We were definitely interested, but the day we went to see him he didn't play the full game.

"He was either sent off or he walked off, I can't remember which. We ended up leaving it, we didn't make a move for him.

"I don't think we saw enough of him to make a decision, whereas Arsenal were much closer to the situation at the time and they eventually got themselves a terrific player.

There you go

Welbeck Deal Sorted

All the recent kerfuffle relating to United and Danny Welbeck not seeing eye-to-eye on contract negotiations really got the press going.

Stories of Welbeck and United parting company were thrust into the papers generating the usual wave of gossip.

Well now it looks as if the situation is set to ease or be eradicated completely with the inference, from one major tabloid, being that Welbeck is set to put pen-to-paper on a new deal.

The deal, as the tabloid puts it, is for a five year deal whereby Danny`s weekly salary would rise to a cool £42,000 a week. The tabloid then goes on to suggest that the deal is a rework of an original offer whereby Danny`s salary would have been more bonus orientated.

The tabloid goes on to infer that although Danny hasn`t put pen-to-paper to the deal yet, the ambience suggests that it will be sorted very soon.

Manchester United - Welbeck Deal Sorted

The press must hate that we don't give them updates on contracts or even the amounts, but they know they can make up anything they want and we'll almost never come out and release any info in order to prove them wrong.

For those who read the football tabloids, you end up hearing how every United player is leaving by the time they have less than 2 years left on their deals.

Good to see Danny being humble, if the reported wages are true. I'd imagine a lot of people in his position would want a lot more.

Excellent. Talented-home grown striker with the world at his feet, and who loves the club.

Expected to sign a new deal.... now there's a shock.

Sarcasm.

Watching him, I know he has the skills, but I don't think he has the brain. Two or three times he could've slipped players in, but decided to take the harder and greeder option.

Nah, he's very intelligent for a forward, his decisions were symptomatic of a Manchester born forward desperate to score but starved of possession.

Just no.

He definitely has the brain, but he was greedy today. Didn't see a lot of the ball, so I guess he was trying too hard when he did get it, didn't have a good game. Young & learning though, he's the future, no doubt.

Trolling again Lynk?

That's the product of an hour of going up against 3 centre-halves and getting nowt. Going to make him desperate to make something happen when he gets in the game.

Spot on.

Although he lacks the nous at the moment to occupy a defence on his own least in my opinion.

I wouldn't say he lacks the brain Lynk. He does have a habit of making some rash decisions from time to time. Think he was a bit frustrated playing up top alone this game. Not his best. He's young and every now and then he'll have a stinker. Shame it came today.

Frustrating afternoon for him, let it show towards the end with some desperate attempts, but greater players than him have had bad days in that role.

Perhaps lacking a brain is harsh, but like you said he makes a lot of rash decisions by taking things on himself rather than playing someone in, or finishing quickly.

He was crap today, wasn't strong enough, gave the ball away cheapily and he will never play well with Hernandez, they are too similar.

He was never going to do it all on his own. As well as Scholes and Carrick played today, they were on a different wavelength to Welbeck and he got nothing from Giggs who seemed to want to complicate everything as much as possible rather than playing a simple ball or putting a cross in. Valencia did really well today but didn't provide anything for Danny either. Berbatov should have replaced Giggs about 30 minutes before he did. Shocking substitutions.

In what way are Welbeck and Hernandez similar?

You manage to be wrong almost 100% of the time. It's quite an achievement being that consistent.

They are vastly different, imo. Hernandez is more of a "play on the shoulder" striker, a poacher who depends on good supply. Welbeck is a bit of a "all rounder" better link up than Hernandez, but not a wonderful as some have been saying. Smart movement, good finisher. I don't mean to constantly put Welbeck down, but I think Hernandez would be the better option if we had a more creative player in the midfield.

Yeah, the substitutions were weird. We weren't playing enough balls up front, so we took off one of our best supply lines, and put on a guy who heavily relies on supply. I'd have liked to have seen Berbatov up with Welbeck instead of Cheech, at least Scholes would have been replaced with another player who could pick out a run.

I suppose Cheech's scoring record at Anfield may have swayed Fergie, but his current form should have been considered too.

Are people really having a go at Welbeck today? It has to be one of the hardest jobs in football playing upfront on your own against a team that is sitting back with 3 natural centrebacks surrounding you.

He did make some bad choices late in the game when he was knackered though.

Welbeck doesn't have the experience required to play up top by himself for mine. If anyone it's Berbatov who's most capable of being the lone striker. I have no doubts that in the future Welbeck will excel in that kind of role, but for now he's lacking some maturity as well as some understanding of how to use his strength in that position.

he shouldn't play on his own up front, he is like a flair player with great movement and it's asking too much from him to suddenly be brilliant in a 451

In what way are Welbeck and Hernandez similar?

They are both strikers that play their best by making good runs off defenders shoulders. Their best attributes are about 6 yards out where they can be leathal.

Which one is going to sit that but deeper and play a through ball? Which one could have held the ball up so the midfielders could have joined the attack today?

I think he was our best option to play alone up front - doesn't mean he's a great option for it. Our hands were tied with the midfielders available though, would never have been a good idea to start with two in the middle with who we had at our disposal.

Well it's not easy, but Danny was pretty poor today, so it's normal that people will say so

And the fact that if Welbeck was getting nothing from a three man midfield, reducing that to two and adding another striker was never going to improve things.

Had a huge job to do today, unfortunately he didn't quite have the level of game needed from him. You can see the youthful tendencies in his play, wanting to try too much and being too selfish at times.

I'd question the tactics before questioning his contribution.
