He did well for Hernandez's goal but I'm not convinced he made intelligent runs when the crosses came in.

I mentioned this in the hernandez thread. He didn't go into the spaces where the ball always ended up, which was across goal. He thought he was being intelligent by constantly offering the cutback, but he was doing it in spaces where the chelsea defenders were already covering. He has such a natural instinct outside of the box, but not nearly as smart when in it as our other 3 strikers.

Which one was that? The one which was behind him and could have been a penalty? Hardly great. There was nowt wrong on his Januzaj cross positioning, those are crosses Young or Valencia should be making and then Januzaj should be where Welbeck was and Welbeck further forward. Choice is to drop back or push forward and it's hard to say if the cross would have gotten through because he was being well marked.
Sorry, I disagree, in the grand scheme of things it was a great chance. Any striker worth his salt would have put that away or at the very least trouble the keeper.

Was involved in pretty much our every good chance, nice one two with Young at the start and excellent play and pass for our goal, and was unlucky with that chance as Azpilicueta clearly fouled him. I understand why he played behind Januzaj when we already played Januzaj through the middle, but I don't understand why we had to play Januzaj in the middle/why we had to play both Valencia and Young.

As for that chance, it seems like every chance Welbeck has in the box is great and would have been burried if someone else was there, even though it's far from ideal goalscoring chance.

Welbeck's chance was tough. He clearly didn't anticipate Chelsea's defending would be so poor to allow that ball to come to him, and the defender it slipped by was only a couple of yards away. He had a split second to poke a shot with his weaker foot, that he wasn't expecting to take. He wasn't readied, and the ball was under his feet. These situations are very difficult.

Even if he hadn't been kicked, I think he would have figured out a way to scuff it. That's what I feel about Welbeck and clear cut chances like that.

His movement in the box and lack of runs between the central defender and full-back is dissapointing. For several crosses today you could see him starting his runs when the ball was passed into the box or passed infront of goal. Strange that he hasn't learned from RVP and Hernandez and tries dummy runs or starts into space or dangerous areas before the final ball.

Played and linked up well today, although as some have mentioned he wasn't attacking the six yard box as we have seen him do in other games recently especially Villa away. Thought he and Hernandez together made us look a lot more dangerous and they played some nice passes together. If Rooney and Van Persie aren't ready for League Cup semi-final second leg Welbz and Chico should start the game as a our 9 and 10.

PS) As we all know he should've had a penalty

He made our goal today with a really slick move but when Hernandez came on, Danny started moving into more wide positions, especially on the right. It started getting a bit crowded out there with Valencia and Rafael too.

He can do a good defensive job there (see Alonso last season) and offers a bit of a running threat and outlet to relieve pressure but he's not a natural 10 at all.

Agreed, but I've said in other threads, in Alonso there was a good tactical reason to do it, he was the play maker, yesterday Villa did the same to Gerrard and it can work well, however we've used it a fair few times this season when there is no one for him to sit on, as with today. Luiz and Ramires aren't their play makers, they just provide a base so that the others can drift. Him sitting deep offered little and for me, a lot less than had he simply led the line with Kagawa there and Januzaj wide. We could have kept the ball better, launched different types of attacks and for me given the defensive performance of Young, we really wouldn't have lost much defensively, certainly not enough compared to what we lost in attack.

He wasn't playing as a striker today, he was clearly in behind Januzaj for much of the game.

100% pass completion btw.

He's never going to be a united forward. Squad player? Maybe.

I don't think he'll ever be THE man that leads our line because if we wanna remain on top then the striker has to be out of the very top drawer but that doesn't mean he can't be an important player for the club.

Really don't understand why he was playing behind Januzaj today.

Surely would have been better to play Hernandez if that was the case?

What boots does this lad wear? Constantly slipping on his fecking arse. That penalty was fecking amateurish. He just cannot hit the target to save his fecking life. He tries hard but he's not a United player, we need to move this standard of player on to where they belong sadly.

Agreed. It's painful watching him play like he did tonight. Constantly falling over, failing to find a teammate or giving the ball away stupidly.

It sounds harsh but I feel players like himself and Cleverley are cut far more slack than deserved simply because they are Academy products.

The reason why I'm not hugely in love with Danny (I like him, but I wouldn't consider him first XI quality for a top side) is when he's playing, he's often in there for all of the wrong reasons associated with an attacker, i.e. his defensive duties. That's bollocks. It stems back to Ferguson using him wide-left quite a lot and he simply doesn't bring anything to our play.

If we're going to play him, play him up top. Otherwise, leave him on the line.

Here we go, he wasn't the fecking twat of a forward who missed a sitter and was generally awful in open-play. Shit penalty but he's not a penalty taker, would fill me with confidence at all.

Exactly how many PL strikers do you think have a better goals per mintue ratio than Danny's one goal every 137 minutes this season? And that includes several matches playing on the left wing where he's barely had so much as a shot.

This place is fecking pathetic.

Back to being shit now, this place seriously flip flops over Welbeck to the extreme at times.

I just can't work him out. He has moments of class, but they're so few and far between. He's managed to bag some goals this season, but has he actually played that well?

He's like a footballing enigma. He has accurate passing, but never sets anything up. He's tall, but barely ever threatens the goal with headers. He's fast, but almost never converts 1 on 1s. He appears to have great technique, but if it's a key moment he completely loses it. He scores goals, but still seems very un-clinical. He runs around a lot, but is never in the right place at the right time.

I don't mean to be harsh cause there's clearly a footballer in there, but I think the best thing for him is a decent break again now, assuming RVP and Rooney are back.

Rooney, of course, has never taken a shit penalty.

Ronaldo, obviously, never missed one badly in a big final either.

Yep, players just aren't allowed to have quiet periods or make mistakes without being labelled as shit.

In the Matchday thread de Gea and Januzaj were being called retarded by so-called fans, for what? de Gea's first mistake in over a year and Januzaj being knackered and making wrong choices. It's disgusting.

Play him up front like actually as a number 9 and there's a class player there, simple as that, biggest problem for him is he works his bollocks off and ends up playing deeper to cover defensive deficiencies.

As I said in the match day thread, he's a strange player. One game he looks like a world beater, the next a second division donkey.

A shot on goal that he needs to think about rather than take instinctively.
No surprise.

I really want Danny to be a real goal machine. But is he ever going to have the ice in his veins to not feck up so many chances?

Giving him a penalty was a crazy idea - if there's one thing we know about Welbeck it's that he'll feck up a straight forward chance with time to think about it, but score if you only give him a split second to back-heel it or something.

I guess there weren't many other options though, when you look at the other penalties. Not sure what happened to Valencia.
