This.

Couple of years back we rarely heard our players threatening the club for better contracts.

And not especially players who have come through the academy.

I'm wondering if it is the 'it' thing to make up rumours about our youngsters, so in a months time they can run an exclusive 'crisis' report about them all leaving?

Perhaps we've generally always had this? But it's only being reported more nowadays (except Neville, Scholes etc..).

Perhaps this is happening at every club, and we're only hearing it about our players as it gains more hits?

I'm thinking it's either a crock of shit, or pretty standard nowadays. Either way, I'm confident Welbeck will stay, and I'm feeling better about Ravel and Paul after hearing this.

Media drivel... we don't have a clue what is happening, stories like this are usually just tactics deployed from all sides of the party and not to be taken too seriously in my view.

FWIW I don't think stories like this have become more frequent since Rooneygate, perhaps we just feel a little more vulnerable than we once did.

Yeah. The scariest bit about this is that these are youth players and they seem to entertain the thought that holding the club hostage is a viable solution to get a raise. The problem right now is whether to acquiesce to their demands or to give them the boot.

Didnt he sign an extension this season with Cleverley as well?

No. In October/November it was reported that we were about to offer one but nothing came of it. Posted this a couple of days ago:

There were rumours that he was being offered a new contract in October and November. I thought he actually signed one too but it turns out he never did. The last contract he signed was in 2009 and expires in June 2013:

I can't see him going anywhere. Perhaps if he wasn't getting much game time but he's been playing quite a lot when fit. Certainly can't see him leaving over money. Not much to worry about I think, though it is strange that he hasn't signed a new contract yet unless we were never going to offer him once when the papers said we did.

What about the precedent set by Keane? Or Rio?

Players have been playing hardball over contracts since Rooney was playing for the U16s.

Rio and Keane did hold the club hostage with contract negotiations but I don't think what they did caused as pervasive a precedent as it is with Rooney's case. Rooney questioned the ambition of the club and threatened to leave and we (most likely) gave him a big fat raise. Sir Alex should have kept his foot on the ground and not cave into Rooney's demands.

I'm guessing United contract disputes are the media's flavour of the month at the moment then.

and lose him for not even half his worth? Not at all.

He'll get the contract he deserves, the club has never been stingy when it comes to rewarding players who deserves it regardless of their contract situation.

If this is true then I doubt it's over us not wanting to give him 60k. That seems very cheap, considering he's our first choice striker and his performances. And it is quite possible he'll shine even more, so he'll be in an even better bargaining position. Just get him what he wants, he deserves it.

I'll go along with this. Considering what Rooney's supposedly on, and taking into account their performance levels so far this season, I wouldn't say 60K sounds unreasonable at all... but then what do I know about football finances and player wages...

You have to consider that we've got a huge squad and we can't improve everyone's contracts regularly. We've got to stay in the under 50% region of wages to turnover ratio, otherwise we'll suffer in the long run.

VDS, Neville, Hargreaves, O'SHea, Brown, Scholes (sort of) are off our wage bill but we more than made up for it with A.Young's 100k+ a week contract, Jones (must be on a decent one), DDG and Rooney's huge increase.
That's why we can't give Pogba and Morrison more money (and rightly so). There's basically so much room for maneuver, we're not City or Chelsea.

Look at Arsenal and their policy of giving a lot of money to very young players. Once more than a few establish themselves and start asking for better contracts (100k+) Arsenal struggle to match the demands and they're off.

Shitting hell, is Ashley Young on 100k a week? That can't true, surely?

Yawn. Another contract story.

I wouldn't worry. He'll sign.

It going to be hard for our side to argue he shouldn't be on a fairly large contract when he's starting for most of our games, and big games.

Contracts with lots of incentives seems to be the solution, and if Welbeck plays and scores I'm sure we're happy to pay him. We have Chicharito on a pretty cheap contract, you can win them all!

I hope this isn't true! What is it with players being so fecking eager for a pay rise after above average performances for half a season.

I would like to think Danny would wait at least to the end of the season to ask for a pay rise. And if he has a good first season then, yeah, maybe he deserves a little extra incentive in his contract, but I wouldn't think anything major (footballer wages wise).

Ahh. Forgot the story was cold hard fact. Welbeck is a nob, Welbeck is a nob.

:nono:

Looks like more shit-stiring from The Mail this morning... according to gossip columns anyway

Guardian Rumour Mill said:
Not content with reporting that Johnny Depp and his wife Vanessa Paradis are "living sad and separate lives" (translation: they've been married for a long time), today's Daily Mail exclusively reveals that contract talks between Danny Welbeck's people and Manchester United officials have stalled, because the club are "angered" by their young striker's wage demands. The 21-year-old currently earns £15,000 per week, is being offered £50,000 per week, but is apparently refusing to sign on the dotted the line unless he's given £60,000.

Football transfer rumours: Welbeck talks deadlock at Manchester United? | Barry Glendenning | Football | guardian.co.uk

I would get the story from The Mail website, but I refuse to visit that vile place. Anyway... I still think it'll all get sorted fairly soon(ish) with no problems at all. But lets just imagine this story has some gravitas for a moment and is true... With United (rumoured) to be giving Rooney 150K a week, you could hardly be suprised by youngsters also wanting more money... look at the example they have to follow! (not that it's true of course...)

It's worth reminding everyone coming to this late that THe People, which isn't even a real newspaper, made this up on Sunday. We all dismissed it as nonsense then, but a Daily Mail hack has seen an opportunity to pinch some nonsense and go to lunch early.

The tabloids are utter scum, and all football clubs should refuse to have anything to do with them.

I've heard all kinds of nonsense about this. One being that what Welbeck's being offered is less than what Owen is currently on after being "awarded" a contract extension last year. If that's true, then there's no way Welbeck should sign the contract, and it's a bit of an insult.

Whilst I really don't want to defend whatever money is being paid to Michael Owen to feck about on twitter and almost never actually play football, a players salary should always reflect their seniority as much as their ability.

You can't have youngsters demanding the same as the more senior members because they're better than them. Their salary will naturally increase over time and when Welbeck is in his peak years as a pro chances are he'll be earning more than Michael Owen ever earned. He needs to be patient though. If all our best youngsters start getting equality with the senior pros within a year or two of becoming a first team member then our wage bill will be ridiculous.

Isn't Owen on close to zilch when he's injured?

True, but the problem IS that Michael fecks about on twitter all day and hardly ever actually plays, even when he isn't injured...which is never. In fact he seems to spend most of his time (which the club pay for) promoting things designed to make more money for himself.

Seniority does come into it, but if I did the same job as someone else, and did it much better, and was much more reliable, and popular amongst customers/fans/whatever, I wouldn't expect to be earning less than that person, regardless of our respective ages. So IF that is Welbeck or his agent's position, then I reckon it's a perfectly understandable one.

Can't see him not signing a new deal either way.

Any idea what Hernandez is on?

I think it's Jesus but it could be acid

More from the Daily Mails story (this time from goal.com), again, make of it what you will.

Goal.com said:
The newspaper claims that the striker is angling for £60,000-a-week, with his club only willing to offer a deal that starts at £45,000-a-week, an offer that still represents a significant hike on his current weekly wages of around £15,000.

A rise would see him fall in line with some of the club’s other younger players, with defenders Phil Jones and Chris Smalling both said to be earning in the region of £50,000-a-week.

This is not the first time, though, that the tactics of Welbeck’s advisors have caused problems. Former Sunderland chairman Niall Quinn was taken aback last season after the England striker asked for a number of separate bonuses on top of his wages ahead of his loan move to the Stadium of Light.

I would take anything the mail say with a pinch of salt after the article from them last week saying Ronaldo was coming back in the summer.

Guys, who -among current first teamers- is on 60k or near that mark?

Does anyone really know? I don't think the club releases such info.

Personally, I'd ask "who isn't on 60k+".
Obviously Welbeck, but I don't think there are many players under 60k. The younger ones - Fabio, Rafael, Cleverley. Smalling and Jones I suspect are around the 60k mark. Who knows.

Oh to be a footballer, even just for a week...
