What constitutes an effective performance if not this?

Some quotes from a couple of years ago for a bit of fun:

Thinking he might not make it is understandable but seriously, how can anyone think he has an abysmal first touch or "major technical issues"?

That's some quality public shaming you're going for. Hold your head high.

It's part of the fun of expressing a strong opinion on a forum, you could be correct and be smug about it, or you could be totally wrong and everyone gets the chance to laugh at it.

No need to be so serious about it

Yeah, that's what happens on anonymous forums. Spot on.

That blackbill was a terrible, terrible poster. I swear he compared Rooney to Heskey once.

He loved Berbatov so much that he hated any player that got in his way, so Welbeck and in particular Rooney were the focus of his fury.

My word he must be the worst striker in the PL!!!

Not too bad outside the box but once he gets inside he is as much use as a chocolate fireguard.

It truly is bizarre. Give him time to think in the box and all his obvious ability (outside the box) disappears! Still got to love Danny.

Wouldn't go that far but I get your point. He's great outside the box, he looks like a quality player but as soon as he get's anywhere near the 18 yard line he goes to shit most of the time. Really needs to improve on his all round finishing if he can get that sorted then he will be a great player.

It's all mental, his composure outside the box shows how gifted he is, he'll mature and grow out of it.

I just don't get Welbeck. He's wonderful everywhere on the pitch with a calm and assured touch but he's absolutely horrendous as soon as he enters the box. His decision making and ability to shoot/pass just suddenly disappear when he's in the box.

He gets rushes of blood to the head when he's got a chance on goal. Give him time to mature and he'll be a very good striker.

His contribution to the side is still worthy of a starting place. Only a complete idiot can't see what he offers to the team.

He's garbage, hasn't scored one good goal all season

Any goal in the Bernabeu is a good goal.

I noticed when RVP came on, his first forward run at goal when he was looking for a pass from Hernandez involved some beautiful movement. We need to see some of that from Welbeck. He also needs to shoot more, he seems to want to wait for the perfect chance.

He's like a normal sized man who was one day given the gift of gigantic legs and he's still struggling to learn how to use them properly.

Don't get the criticism. He was fantastic against Madrid, and except his bambi on ice moment his link up play and workrate were great as usual.

He's clearly not garbage. He's got immense talent for his age but he just isn't a goalscorer, that's clear to see. He doesn't seem selfish enough to be a striker, seems to prefer providing others and linking the play. He played better when RVP came on and he was allowed to roam a bit more. Playing him as an out and out striker seems to hinder him. He's about linking the play at home and stretches sides away from home.

He's playing like a young lad who is desperate to succeed here and is probably aware of the criticism he is getting in the media and from sections of our own support.

I'm not overly concerned right now as our other three strikers are providing plenty of goals and Danny has offered a lot elsewhere on the pitch as well as that goal in Madrid.

I still believe that be has a future here.

The problem here is Danny has become too good at defending down that left hand side. So good, that he refuses to even let himself past.

He was one of our best players in first half, but played poor in second. His finishing reminds me of Suarez's last season, he spends so much energy before getting into good chance, and after that, he looks tired to finish it.

Another few "classic Welbeck" moments today. Excellent build up, then turns into a drunk when close to the goal.

Wonderful footballer, the amount of times he wins the ball back from the front is immense too. But Danny Danny oh Danny, at that moment when you ran though I screamed at my TV, "now stay fecking composed Danny", 2 seconds later you did what you did.

If he can calm himself down around that box he'll be some player, one of the best around.

Really!? Despite the fact that he's been brilliant for a good while now, scored at the Bernabeu less than a week ago and did fine tonight despite looking a bit jaded? Bold claim, bro.

I wanted him to get on the scoresheet to try kickstart something after Madrid.

Like his skills in the box it's one step forwards two steps back.

He'll come good in time. At least he's not being completely useless :)

Didn't he score loads of goals in his youth and reserve days? Why has this silly streak developed?

It's as if he has some kind of allergic reaction to the box. He just crumbles the minute he enters it and he needs to sort it out, soon IMO.

Otherwise, he was very good.

Some/most strikers do. Confidence plays into it - it's weird as he plays great clever flicks in and around the box it's just stuff like running with the fecking ball he is struggling with. He'll start banging them in once he gains some confidence back.
