I think that in the current team Welbeck is a better partner to Rooney than Hernandez & Berbatov, however given slightly different circumstances I would rather have Hernandez in the team. It all depends on any potential midfield signing Fergie might make in the Summer. Given the right midfielder I think Hernandez is an ideal striker to have, however at current the strikers are depended upon to get involved a bit more rather than just do nothing and wait for service (suited to Hernandez), as it stands though Welbeck is a better option and I'm very impressed with his progress.

Welbeck is looking awesome for us these days but then he look great at Sunderland too, he basically drove all their attacks. Cracking goal today. I like Hernandez and what he brings but Danny seems to have more technique and creativity to his game.

I think Welbeck has all the tools: technique, speed, strength and intelligence and that when he manages to put it all together he's going to be a huge player for us and England.

With Scholes' return comes impending opportunities for Hernandez? I hope not, Welbeck is my pick.

His hold-up play is fantastic. Uses his body well, controls the ball excellently and has great vision to bring others into play.

And that's not even the best part of his game. Awesome striker in the making.

Either of 'em will do for me, but I think that there's more to Danny's game at the moment. Hernandez will evolve into one of the game's best poachers: maybe even up there with Law, Owen (circa 1998) and Greaves.

His movement is the best of any of our forwards.

He drops deep and is good enough to receive the ball into his feet, and move it quick enough to turn, but he's also turning and running in behind for the ball. Defenders don't know whether to mark him or drop off, and then have to worry about Rooney on top of that.

Plus he's deceptively skillful and has great awareness. Reminds me of Cole, or uninjured Saha.

Yes he often makes the right decision and looks to pass the ball first and if nothing else is on he's happy to shoot, or dribble!

Something along the lines of him being quality and will go on to be a "top, top player".

He might not be as clinical in front of goal as Hernandez but he offers more to the team. That said Hernandez could still improve his link-up play and Welbeck could improve his goalscoring ratio so it's an open case. Long term we will have to pick one of them though so the side adjusts to him, we cannot swap it forever.

Hats off to SAF for the development of Welbeck so far. He's always said that he had it in him to be a top, top player even when it was not as evident.

That said the evidence should have been provided by his debut goal against Stoke:-

I thought both Wellbeck and Campbell would make it....whatever happened to Campbell.

At Sunderland, knee injuries galore. Tore his ACL, and then re did it during the warm up in his first game back. Back in March apparently.

One thing i like about Welbeck, is that he can actually hold up the ball. He still looks skinny but so many times he was shrugging off the challenges from City and holding up the ball well. Thought he was unlucky to be pulled off, but he was on a yellow.

pity about Campbell...

Wellbeck seems very strong...looks better built than I remember him from last season playing for Sunderland.

Two players he reminds me of is Berba and Sherringham...though much faster.

I think it's great that here we have a genuine talent, who cost nothing, scoring a world class goal to help sink City who have probably thrown more than 300 mil on strikers in the past few years and still have it all thrown back in their faces by the likes of Adebayor, Tevez and Ballotelli

Such a universally liked player amongst all our fans.

Rooney, Berbatov, Hernandez, Welbeck ...... er and Owen.

The perfect balance of experience, youth, ambition, pace, strength, genius skill, bravery, club loyalty and the ability to score buckets loads of goals. In a years time, this will be the most balanced and prolific collection of strikers in world club football.

Now the whole Valencia - Rooney express train is running as smoothly as the Beckham - Yorke train of 1999 - 2001 did, and that Welbeck and Berbatov can score immediately when called upon, things are looking very good.

With Young, Nani and Valencia providing the crosses, and just one world class midfield playmaker who hopefully we will sign in the summer, the attacking 6 of our side will be out of this world in 12 months time.

And Danny Welbeck will be a huge part of that future. Still needs to bulk up abit I think as well as get better in his decision making, but given his age, I don't think he is far off where the likes of Rooney, Owen or Ronaldo were at his age.

If he can continue his rate of development and technical progress, stay free of massive injuries and stay at our club his entire career (HUGE IFS I KNOW), then Rooney's eventual goal haul and perhaps even Sir Bobby's has a contender.

Yes, I know Im getting ahead of myself, but this boy has all the things needed ..... he now just needs time to physically develop to his end sizing and complete his skill set to high levels of capability. Up there with Ballotelli and Pato as one of the most exciting young strikers in world football right now.

What a finish today brilliant!

Yeah, I loved how it was a 'thinkers' goal. ie, he did not just lash a volley at it but was conscious enough to realise that he had to wrap his entire foot around the ball the get the slight swerve so it slotted neatly inside the far post.

Technically, one of his best goals for us so far.

Like everyone else, I'm very impressed with Danny. Nothing better than a local lad breaking through. Warms my heart and shows we're doing things right. I think it's also fair to say he's displaced Hernandez for the starting berth. I know Hernandez has had a stop start season but he's not been good enough so far to be starting. He'll get better in time but Danny is looking a top player already.

Scary thing is he's only 20. Does anyone else notice his rapidness too? My goodness does the boy have some pace. He gallops after defenders like there's no tomorrow. True african! Makes me proud :)

indeed mate.

all top quality strikers have that extra bit.

heck he is just starting his footballing life and he is this good....

lucky us and England.

It was a goal gifted by De Jong who inexplicably didn't challenge for the ball.

As much as you'd blame De Jong, Welbeck hit the ball really smoothly...

De Jong however, should have sacrificed a bit but I wouldn't blame him for not lunging into someone's foot at that situation... You'd have to have Smith's mentality to go for that.

A year ago, I was laughed at for suggesting that Welbeck was a better footballer than Chicharito. Now, the gulf in class between the two players is staggering, and surely even the less perceptive fans are beginning to see this.

They have different qualities. Hernandez is in a spell of poor form, which is very common for your second season when defenders work you out a bit. But he's an absolutely lethal finisher. Welbeck's build-up play is better, but he is prone to disappearing. I don't see a gulf in class there.

De jong looks abit rusty with little football this season. But Welbeck do looked like a real monster there and his speed to the ball was amazing

Brilliant, I also loved the determination to get to the ball first as if he was hellbent on being the first one to it

Danny beat de Jong to the spot and it looked like he was afraid of giving away a soft foul inside the box more than a lack of effort/mistake

That "prone to disappearing" accusation doesn't hold water this season. Not so long as he's played in his preferred position anyway.

Regarding De Jong's culpability, Danny struck the ball when it was still almost at the same height as De Jong's head - who obviously thought he would be able to let the ball drop low enough to volley. Amazing bit of athleticism from Welbeck. Moved like lightening to get there first.
