They took a more sensible approach and stopped wasting money by selling off top players on the cheap. But they didn't have to do that to comply with FFP. They always let players go when new superstars arrived, that's not really something new and it makes sense. It's impossible to keep all of them happy and it can easily hurt the team chemistry, so someone has to go. Maybe the necessary investment in the upcoming rebuilding of their stadium played a role as well, but those costs wouldn't even matter regarding FFP (investments in infrastructure are excluded). Whatever the reasons were for Real to sell Di Maria (and making a lot of money certainly was one of them), FFP wasn't a problem for them at all, just like it isn't a problem for United despite spending like crazy in the past 2 years.
