The other options may not even BE worse, it's not a player we're discussing.

Right, but we've identified him as the best man for the job, and in doing so, have identified everyone else as a worse option. It's not a complicated concept.

Would you rather be known as the club who make offers to staff and turn 360 after they’ve done their part and given notice?

some of you have zero patience. He’s the man we want, then we wait
And Newcastle get stuck with paying an employee for the next two years doing nothing. Pretty ruthless...

That would be extremely scummy, and hopefully we don't do that.

I never said that mate, I said we should keep our options open any potential feckery, like what Newcastle are doing now. Would you rather a DOF now in the summer or after the summer and let wilcox and berarda take temporary charge of transfers?
If Ineos have identified Ashworth as the man then I see no reason why Wilcox and Berrada can't handle his duties until he's available. It's not like he won't be able to consult via friendly lunches.

Honestly @The Mitcher not sure what point you're trying to make here. Others have already responded but we evidently haven't ONLY looked at Ashworth - we however decided he was the guy for the job and he wants to join.

What does "keep our options open" mean? What does "Newcastle mugging us off" mean? Seems like hollow concepts to something that is at this point in time entirely straightforward.

Quite obviously the latter, since a DoF is there for long term planning and not immediate effect. Ashworth doesn't even do recruitment.

Keep going in the same direction?

It seems like the compensation Newcastle want for Ashworth is tied to how much they need to pay for their new guy (+ some backroom handshake deals saying we won't go for Freedman / some other targets they really care about). So I assume once this deal is in-place, Ashworth will join us.

Watch Freeman do an absolutely amazing job while we ridicule Ashworth for paying 80 million for Branthwaite and hiring Southgate.

Is it me or is Dougie a dodgy sounding name? Like the local drug dealer or that guy who your dad knows who sells chipped NTL boxes

Dougie sounds like the type of name you’d give to an unorthodox pet. Like an iguana or a hedgehog.

We will come to an agreement probably around 7 million and Ashworth starting September 1.

People overestimate the affect it will have on our recruitment for this window. But for his role, recruitment is probably only about 10%, and whether he is starting today or in 6 months, it doesn't have to limit us. We have one of the worlds largest scouting departments, and we have a recruitment team already. They will find the appropriate players and Ashworth will be notified and he will give a YES/NO on potential signings.

On recruitment, the biggest role Ashworth will play is he will need to revamp our scouting network, and ensure we have the right personnel in place to execute the recruitment. But this will take 12-24 months at best.

There is a major misconception that Ashworth will identify the players, negotiate and sign them himself. Instead, he will oversee all departments on the football side. He will need to revamp our medical department, our club staff, and ensuring all players are being handled in the best possible way.

It would be important to get in a new head of recruitment as soon as possible.

I hope for Ashworth to sit down with SAF and Mister Gill and talk about the club.

Ask them questions - What was the ethos of this club? what were its characteristics? What were the principles that guided SAF and Mister Gill ?

Sorry but going back to those times won't solve any of our problems.

This is like Barcelona trying to ask Guardiola what made Barca successful in 2009-2013 and the answer is going to be "Messi." Only, no matter what you do, you can't just slot another Messi in there.

Absolute nonsense, we need a new beginning. Nothing is left anymore and we need to look forward.
He has to come in and be objective and factual about everything, no room for emotion.
We need to build a new standard, everything has been eroded

When we got Ashworth I thought he was meant to be the best Sports Director in the World

Sadly, his time here has been an unmitigated disaster and we’re a worse club now than then

Probably time to move on

You misunderstand. You’re talking about his job description. That has nothing to do with our wild, wet dreams.

That has to be bollocks. I don’t see how you accidentally send yourself an email.
