Daley Blind - Deal Confirmed

Did you watched the 1st half and pass exchanges he had with Robben ?
Robben's just class. His ability to link up, and play those pop passes and move into space makes those around him look better.
Blind hasn't been bad, I just don't think he's been particularly good.

Simmer down now. No need to go overboard and anoint him the replacement to Evra in lieu of Shaw. Regular Eredivisie watchers will tell you he's above average but not good enough for a starting XI spot at United. Could be an excellent utility squad player though. This is why it makes so much sense to rid Fellaini for 10-15 million and sign Blind. Massive improvement in terms of technique, capable of filling 2-3 positions from the bench, younger and more tactically adaptable.

I don't know about 'massive'. He doesn't look that great with the ball to me. And he'd probably look no better in midfield than Fellaini - needing two touches before simple passes.
But for the versatility it would certainly make sense.

Did he make that pass as well?
That wasn't really an example of a 'passing exchange', but I'd say Robben played his part, yes.
Good pass, made to look better by Robben's touch and swivel. His first half pass was brilliant, but I still don't think he looked that good.

Ahh maybe massive was an inappropriate choice of word. But then again I'm not just talking about this match. He's been fairly solid for Ajax in the Champions League, Europa league and the odd dozen Eredivisie matches I've seen in the past couple of seasons. As I stated earlier he won't be a world shattering player but afaik he certainly has a far superior technique compared to Fellaini and is adept at circulating the ball. We also have to keep in mind Spain can unsettle opposition teams with their pressing leading to a few unforced errors or extra touches, especially for the wide-ish role he's playing tonight. Most of the times I've seen him play as a CM for Ajax, especially last season and didn't look out of place at all with their intense possession based system. Keeping that in mind IMO would be a good, more intelligent upgrade on the Belgian (again just as a squad player not a regular starter). :)

We will sign a ton of players if the only criteria is be better than Fellaini.

"Man of the match by a distance" Thierry Henry.

Southampton better hurry up and accept that Shaw bid! In all seriousness, I haven't seen a lot of Blind but like all the Dutch tonight, he was excellent.

Looks like a proper player. I'd never seen much of him before, and said I'd trust van Gaal if he brought him here, and after tonight I'd be delighted. Solid defensively, tidy on the ball. Good player.

I know he was playing left wing back but he totally dominated that midfield in the 2nd half when he was cutting inside. Always made the right decisions at the right time, a couple of great interceptions and 2 assists. Brilliant performance.

Yeah we should tell Southampton to do one, I'd wager this Dutch chap would be about 23m cheaper

I would be utterly amazed if we ever sign this lad. Whenever I've seen him (which has admittedly not been often), he's made Cleverly look like Steven Gerrard for Liverpool v Olympiakos in 2004/05

Not sure what people see in him.

Looked poor when I seen him no better than Buttner!

Agreed. Even as a squad player he looks a bit iffy to me.

Having read a bit about him, he sounds a pretty pointless option. The role he performs in front of the defence and becoming another CB is something that Fellaini could do pretty successfully in my opinion.

Never seen him or Martins Indi play before and was very impressed. Southampton can do one now, van Gaal can tap this one up.

I knew his passing is quality but I wasn't sure we'd see the best of it from a flank position like the one he played tonight. But it was absolutely pristine, the weight and accuracy on those long passes were outstanding.

He made the most passes for his team from the left wingback position and created 4 chances from it.

Lets not all be prisoners of the moment.

Absolutely, but I can't help but feel good about this one after the stick I got for seeing something in him. He proved he's got spades of ability at the highest level with that performance tonight. He looked like he had the maturity of a 30-year-old world class player while being only 24. He can play across the back line and in midfield due to his intelligence. Total footballer with a wand of a left foot.

Van Persie and Robben were outstanding tonight, but Blind was Van Gaal's general tonight.

He may be blind but he seems to have better passing than anybody in our central midfield. Looked head and shoulders over any central midfielder that played for Spain, and that's from the LB.

Not that I'm bought yet but he showed class today.

Defensively he wasn't tested at all. Silva was 'meant' to be on that side but he spent most of his side drifting inside which left only Azpi to challenge him, and going forward, he's no Jordi Alba. From a defensive view point he just had nothing to do, Spain played a lot down the left anyway.

I agree. The opponent was amateurish.

Would be interesting putting him against 11+1 men Brazil.
Wtf

They're the world champions, double European champions and one of the best international sides assembled for decades. They're as good as it gets at international level.

I think people are getting a bit carried away with Blind. Good performance but his passes were made more meaningful by two world class players doing something with them on the other end.

I'd rather play him as a dm and use him as back up lb still get Shaw in. His performance isn't a shock to anyone who has watched him before.
