Daley Blind - Deal Confirmed

I strongly suspect he is going to do really well for us. Next to no fanfare and not a marquee name but I'm willing to fully trust van Gaal on this one. From what I've read about him being hated by the fans and proving them wrong indicates a huge level of mental strength which United badly needs. Also his confidence should be sky high after an excellent world cup and winning last season's Eredivisie player of the year which this team also needs.

Why does everyone assume Strootman will be such an easy signing for us?

It won't. There again Roma are the Spurs of the Serie A and the Serie A is hardly rich these days. I am confident that Roma would seriously consider a 45m bid for him

Hope you don't mean £45m?

He's not worth that much.

Why we must wait for Strootman? He's hardly the only good CM in the world and we need quality now if we really want to achieve our targets this season.

there aren't many quality defensive minded midfielders who are great in passing the ball and who understand VG's philosophy perfectly around

That's the fee we will probably have to pay to get him. Roma are not as rich as Juventus but they are not stupid

They let Benatia go for cheap after claiming earlier in the summer they won't let him go unless a high price comes in.

Strootman is £30m max for me. For £45m, I'm expecting a Scholes or Keane.

I think he will be a good signing. Some of our fans are acting like spoilt brats this summer. Despite all of the strengthening we have done, anything other than their muppet targets isn't good enough. Every single issue with the squad was never going to be fixed in one single window. We have come a long way towards addressing most of them. Rome wasn't built in a day. I hope he does well here. He looked good at the WC and in the couple of Ajax games I've watched this season (despite playing in different positions). His versatility is a benefit. He is already schooled in LvGs philosophy. He can contribute right now and he's young enough to improve and develop his game further. Not much to moan about. The price is reasonable too.

I said in my post I don't think we'll make top 4 if Blind is the only CM we buy in the next 3 days, so it will be even harder to get a top one next summer with back to back failures as regards qualifying for the CL.

Ander was a piece of the puzzle, not the answer to our midfield problems, it has been neglected for so long no single player was the answer.

That will be our 3rd CM we signed this summer, assuming we use Di Maria on the left of a 3 man like Madrid did. The area would be good enough for top 4 for sure, its whether the rest of the team works out.

the CM position in this formation, who does everyone think will be 1st choice? Carrick or Blind?

The level of muppetry has reached an all time high here.

If Blind goes through we will have signed 3 midfielders and 2 defenders, spent £150m and added some genuine quality to the first XI. And still people aren't happy!!!!

Since I am the most negative person in this thread I will say in my case it is not that I think the club have not spent enough or need more big names etc. I personally believe we would be better off not signing another midfielder than bringing in someone like Blind who in my opinion would be a mediocre midfielder for us.

agree with that.

But he is used to LVG system and could easily slot into that DM position, still only 24 and won Dutch player of the season laSt year. Can't be that bad

As already said though, his versatility would be an asset to the squad. Every squad needs a player like Blind, who can cover more than one position. As well as headliners, you also need backup players.

I agree with this and can't realize how some people aren't happy with Blind. We're signing a versatile player who can play both DM and leftback who is a good passer of the ball and will certainly help with our woeful transitional play. I also like that he is a Dutchman trained in the Ajax system, since he'll get the "philosophy" and most likely already speak English at a decent level.

We all dream of the likes of Vidal, but the window has been amazing with signing Di Maria, Shaw, Herrera, Rojo and now seemingly Blind. All of them seem good to great and all of them play in positions we needed reinforcement. Not to mention we've got a top manager as well. I was definitely not expecting a window as good as this.

I don't think we'll see another summer quite like this one for a long time.

While I see your point, I honestly believe we need more. Of course, bringing a ton of players in at once could be a disaster, but I wish we had got a proper centre back and a midfielder. Even loans.

Look at how good Fellaini was for Everton, Young was for Villa and since it now seems that he is leaving how good Kagawa was for Dortmund. If he we sign him Blind will be making a gigantic step up in competition and in my opinion he does not have quality to make that step up.

I understand your sentiment, but you have to remember that what we're doing right now is building a new squad!

Players like Blind are valuable when it comes to mounting lasting campaigns. For-instance, lets imagine we signed Vidal, or some other elite CM, and then in 3 months time he was injured and out for 5 games - would you rather Blind was there in the squad, ready to step in and shore up the midfield, or would you rather Cleverly/Fletcher/Fellaini do the job?

Don't really understand the claims of him being an underwhelming signing. We have currently very limited options in the midfield and our current options are not good enough. I consider Carrick Herrera and Di Maria as our only options. I consider Blind better than Fletch, Clevs,Fellaini and Ando.

Blind is an excellent addition IMO. Yes he isn't a fancy name but he is a good player who can do the job for us. Question marks over our major targets Vidal and Strootman made us go safe. Its too risky to pay a huge transfer fee and end up with someone who is a crock. Its a smart piece of business considering that its not a huge transfer fee either.

Well said. You'll still have some brattish moaning when the window closes and Vidal is still a Juve player.

Except Blind plays in a position where we actually desperately need someone. Fellaini was always destined to fail. It doesn't matter if Blind isn't top class yet, because he will offer much more than our current options, can fit in LVG's system, and offer versatility. That's good enough reasons to bring him in.

But, what if Blind shows up and ends up doing worse than all of them? When we signed Fellaini to justify the signing some said "there is no way he is any worse than Cleverley".

Hopefully we'll never need a summer like this again!!

Fellani was a shit signing, you can't use as an excuse never to sign a player who may be able to make the step up.

What do you think Blind is lacking in his game to play as a DM

I mean a proper ball-winner. If Blind is signed I would imagine that would be his job, but I would have liked a player with that reputation. I also think we need an organizer at the back, I don't know if that's Rojo and the current staff aren't up to it.

This guy has been with the Ajax academy since he was 8 years old. £14m is a bargain for someone with his versatility , technique, and vision. He looks and plays like Carrick and Fletcher combined, looks amazingly comfortable with the ball at his feet, and literally grew up learning total football. Very happy if this goes through.

I agree! I think he's a real hard worker can play in a number of positions as well, knows LVG well and will fit into the squad straight away!

Is DM his best position then? I was under the impression he was a LB or emergency CB who could do a job in central midfield. If his best position is in front of the back 4, a position we really need to fill, i don't see the harm in bringing him in to play there even if it's only until Carrick is fit.

Is he good enough to start there for us long term? i.e ahead of Carrick?

Do most of you who know the type of player Blind is think he'll be assigned the ball-winner/enforcer task?

I don't know a lot about the lad to be honest.

But, what if Blind shows up and ends up doing worse than all of them? When we signed Fellaini to justify the signing some said "there is no way he is any worse than Cleverley".
You could say that about any signing. It's not an exact science - you sign players with the best of intentions and on the basis of what you've seen of them. Sometimes it goes spectacularly right, sometimes spectacularly wrong.

Agreed a 4 + 1 year deal. Ajax will also get some percentage or something (I assume a sell on though translation is dodgy).

The signing we all expected.

I think he can be a very effective player for us. He isn't world class but what's great is that he understands Van Gaal's system, and the more players we have who understands it, the easier it would be for the others to adapt from it. That's how I see it. He's versatile and as we saw in the WC, he can be a real danger to the opponent with his passes. Played fantastically against Spain.

£14m is a whole lot cheaper than what I expected so I'm happy with this signing. If we can get one more in and I'll rate this the best window we've had.
