Cuadrado

Sao Paulo actually confirmed Barca's interest in Douglas. Weird.

My guess would be that Douglas coming in would mean they keep Alves for this season and hope that Douglas or whoever is ready for next season - assuming the transfer ban does come in.

It seem that the Italian clubs want other ridiculous money for their players while they go on and buying players on peanuts.

He has not been included in Fiorentina's friendly with Real Madrid tonight.

I wonder if there is anything in it.

So Dani Alves apparently is staying at Barca...Means Cuadrado might be available if we want him but with Valencia impressing in the USA in the wing back role then perhaps we have no interest in Cuadrado

Did he though? He was mostly average and is still defensively suspect with his ball-watching and positioning. Young impressed in the pre-season and look how his performance was against Swansea.

Funny how the media were talking like this is a done deal and Barca had trumped us to his signature. Then the season starts and they have better things to write about so it gets completely forgotten about.

Yep, 40m for this guy?

Then again, they don't want to lose him I guess.

The issue is more complex then that.

About few years ago, it became evident that the Italian system of having a club solely relying on the financial power of a rich fan was not enough to win important honors. It started with the collapse of Parma who were involved in the Parmalat scandal and it was followed by the near financial meltdowns of the Roma clubs (Lazio and Roma). Even Inter who were owned by one of the most committed and rich owners in Italian football had to bow down to the fact that he couldn't financially afford to keep the club competitive anymore.

Juventus was the first club to adapt that mainly because it was always the better managed out of the lot (the Agnellis always gave first priority to Ferrari so they had to make due to what they had) and also because they had a decent youth academy which after the match fixing scandal was also fully tested. They used the money wisely on merchandizing ventures and to build a new stadium which is fully owned by them. Such decisions gave them an edge over everyone else and one can safely say that Juventus are by far the richest club in Italy a head above everyone else. The Italian league is slowly degenerating in some sort of Scottish league were the gap between the main club and the rest is growing exponentially ( 4 points in 2011-2012, 9 points in 2012-2013 and 17 points last year)

The situation is pretty simple. All Italian clubs know that real money (above what even Juve can afford) can only come from abroad. They also became experts in cherry picking good talent on cheap (Pogba, Vidic, Evra, Cuadrado etc). So the only way for them to close the gap between Juve and themselves is to hit the jackpot. On the other hand if Juventus manage to get crazy money for lets say Vidal then they would probably secure the league for the next 10 years.

I'm an AV fan and quite agree - he is no defender and barely cuts it at wingback - Ok going forward if not great, but still can't defend due to ball-watching. Bring in Cuadrado please to compete with Rafael as backup while he is in the physio room every other month.

As things look at this stage, it would seem Cuardrado will most likely stay at Fiorentina. The asking price seems too much for all his suitors.

We won't get him (cuadrado) but by god does it look like we need a right back. Valencia was fecking horrific

Please don't ever bump this thread unless we have positive news for this guy especially after games like today...

You bloody tease.

It was so abundantly obvious today. Valencia has "torres'd" himself.....it's just completely gone.

I don't want us to spend £30-40m no this lad. He might be a good player but not what we need especially after the Di maria signing. Spend that money on a CM ffs.

It was either Di Maria or Cuadrado IMO.
As soon as we got wind PSG couldnt sign ADM due to FFP, we made Di Maria our primary target.

feck that. It has to be bollocks.

Why spend 40m Euros in him, when we can add an extra 10m euros and go for Vidal. Or simply add Hernandez.

Where would he go? As an actual RB? I can't see much place for him in the side with di Maria also...

Only makes sense to me if we go 4-4-2 or 4-3-3 and plan to drop one of Rooney/RVP/Mata.

Would be a overkill after Di Maria anyway if it isn't anyway, not adressing CM problems still.

If we buy him, surely he will play as a RB/RWB?

It does seem that way to me, which isn't a bad idea because we desperately need something better out there. I like Valencia but he just does not attack the fullback enough.

I know Cuadrado can play right wing back, but surely this is dead in the water if we complete the Di Maria signing, given we need another defender and central midfielder?

I doubt we would buy both him and Di Maria, surely its one or the other?

Why? If we stick with wing backs he'd play right side.

Alternatively - if he comes in we have two top quality wingers to play either side and we might go back to 4-3-3/4-5-1.

Our right side needs this guy's pace and flair. After Vidal he should be our next priority in my opinion.

I'm suprised we didn't spend big on Benatia, but maybe his heart was set on playing for a great Bayern side rather than in our rebuilding project. After Hummels and Benatia, I'm not sure players like Vlaar are much of an improvement on what we already have.

The fact is that Jones, Smalling, Evans, Rojo and perhaps Keane and Blackett make up a workable group of central defenders if the rest of the team were working properly.

The real problems lie in midfield and on the wings. The issue has been a lack of balance in the side.

Van Gaal has made his first priority to find natural left sided defenders and midfielders-often the hardest players and positions to fill.

By promoting Blackett, by buying Shaw, Rojo, and Di Maria and maybe by getting Blind in the near future, Van Gaal has shored up the left side of his team.

I believe Van Gaal thinks that Strootman is worth waiting for as the defensive lynchpin and playmaker in midfield. Plus Carrick can do that job after he returns from injury.

In the meantime he's going to try to get by on Fletcher and maybe look to a young talent like Lucas Silva in the CDM/deep passing role rather than spend on a short term (and inferior) stop gap like Nigel De Jong.

Vidal (or failing that, Guarin) is now our primary target for a more attacking or box to box CM role. Herrera and Di Maria have already improved our options here in central midfield.

That leaves the right side of the team as the second priority after Vidal in my opinion.

We have only one right back with no backup, and Rafael is even rumored to have been told he wasn't first choice and could be sold.

Valencia and Young are not natural defenders and cannot beat their man.

Januzaj needs a fullback behind him.

Cuadrado offers a great deal to Van Gaal:

(1) He has years of experience playing as a specialist wingback in a 3-5-2

(2) He injects much needed pace and can beat his man. He would make a great winger in a 4-3-3

(3) He was being recruited as a fullback by Barcelona, so perhaps he has the defensive attributes to provide cover for Rafael should we go 4 at the back.

In sum: Vidal, then Cuadrado for me. Forget about another CB and try to get Blind and Lucas Silva for less. Leave Strootman and Hummels for future transfer windows when they are available.

Rather not to be honest.

Would prefer to sign a CB or CDM if we sign Vidal rather than waste money on Cuadrado.

Buying a CDM would be a waste of money if we are going for Strootman in January and when we have Carrick coming back.

Nigel De Jong is a limited player in my opinion. I do like the idea of going for a young talent like Lucas Silva who can deputize Carrick and Strootman in the future.

A CB is a waste of money if they aren't better than what we already have. Vlaar is not better than playing Smalling or Jones IMO. You buy a CB if they can improve your selection. Otherwise you're just wasting your money.
