Cuadrado

When do we not pay over the odds for a player? Everyone knows we're minted and the price for United is always higher than the price for everyone else. We need to get over this, as difficult as it may be.

I know that, I argued the fact that I don't get why people complained with the amount of money we paid for Luke Shaw. Difference is Luke will become a world class player for us, that I'm confident. Having seen this guy only at the world cup and yes he was okay I don't believe he is as good as the value says.

Had we sold Valencia this signing would have made sense but signing a guy for £30 million to play in a position we have decent numbers in (Rafael, Young, Valencia) seems weird.

In the right system and surrounded by good players, he has the potential to become a very good player. I liked him at the WC

Not if we switch to 4-3-3. And honestly, I doubt Valencia will be a regular starter under LVG

Except when you consider fact he improves the team. Yes we've got numbers in that position but quality improves by bringing in Cuadrado.

Is Shaw really better than Rafael, though? Can't help but feel it's the other side we should be strenghtening.

I won't complain about us signing a good player but doesn't seem like a pressing signing.

I love Rafael as the podcast listeners will know, but I don't think Van Gaal is particularly convinced by Rafael. I know there's little to back that up, but that's the impression I get. Honestly, I'm worried about how much game time he will get next season.

You have to remember that Van Gaal wants to play in 4-3-3, Rafael is a RB, Valencia and Young are below average Winger.
The fact that we play in 3-4-3 fo the moment won't change Van Gaal purchase strategy in the long run.
And Cuadrado is probably Nani replacement.

Had to watch a 3min clip on YouTube as never seen him play (other than a shite match at WC)

My scout report would be:

- Can do Ronaldo chop
- Can do Ronaldino Flip Flap
- Can do the 'Poborsky' lob
- Dribbles like Ronaldinho
- QUICK like Kanchelskis
- Would win a dance-off v Sturridge
- Does the Bale Heart
- Hair looks better braided with headband

Summary, from what I can gather from this extensive analysis he looks like a future world player of the year to me.

Pay up and give him the number 11 shirt.

You need to look deeper into the stats. Like I said earlier - he managed 1 and 1 against opposition of any note. It looks like half of his production was against the might of Chievo.

Rooney has scored most of his goals versus Villa and Fulham so it is not that relevant in making a good player or not.
Cuardado has made 107 starts in last three seasons scoring 23 and making 17 assists, this being a winger and wing back in a not so high scoring league. He has 22 caps and has scored 4 and made 6 assists from a wing back position. We do not know the strength of Columbia they are now ranked 6th in the world which means they are not a bad side at all, also Herrera is 24 and not had a Spanish cap yet. Yes I know Spain have been dominant between 2008 and 2012 but still its a fact and I'm guessing you rate him.
If we get him I will be happy as Rafael in injured all the time and still very rash in his challenges. Also Valencia does not provide enough for me, not anymore although he always gives 100%.
If we don't then then so be it as long as central midfield is looked into I will be happy.
Anyway I think we should be embracing potential new signings as this squad needs freshening up and more strength if we want to challenge again.

Last year United looked slow.

I think the club is looking to inject some pace and energy into the squad.

Herrera does that for our midfield. Shaw brings pace to the defense.

Players that have lost a yard like Vidic, Rio and Evra have been allowed to leave.

Cuadrado would inject pace and energy to either a 3-5-2 or 4-3-3 formation, and I expect United to play both.

Absolutely. Lack of pace has been a major weakness of ours for a couple of years now. Cuadrado would be an excellent buy. Exciting player with end product.

Yep, I've got the same feeling. He's always been a little reckless at the back and bar one season where he was one of our best players and we went on to win the title, he's always been a bit of a sicknote. Last season he was pretty dreadful too along with the rest of the United back line.

You have to remember LvG has also seen first hand how reckless Rafael can be, getting sent off (a tad unfairly) against his Bayern side a couple of seasons back which eventually led to us exiting the competition. That has to be on his mind too. Plus with the new formation we've got, he really doesn't fit in anywhere. He didn't look particularly great in the wingback position and he seems to have reverted to his old self. Time will tell but he's no longer an automatic pick.

This is a good video for those who want to see him playing for Fiorentina against good opposition. Taken from the season before last too and shows a range of his abilities which is why I think he'd be great to have. He's got a good first time ball, he's willing to bring it inside, he doesn't mind turning around and playing it safe where necessary, he doesn't mind facing up to opposition and then taking them on (unlike all our wingers bar Januzaj for the most part).

I don't disagree that we need a replacement.

My point was only that he seems late developer who has not played for a decent team these past 3 years, who broke into the national team relatively late in his career, has been hyped because of a couple of games against fairly mediocre opposition at the WC, and for whom we are now talking about 36m.

Come again? He hasn't scored most of his goals against Fulham and Villa, he's scored most goals against them than any other opposition. There's a huge difference between the two. Anyway he's scored against more than 90% of all the teams he's faced in the PL. Not at all comparable to the Cuadrado situation.

Apparently Navas and Cuadrado's pass completion rates should be 86% not 100%.

I am underwhelmed.

Looks like a Nani/Valencia merge.

Valencia should be a squad player moving forward, Young had a good pre season but we all know what his play will eventually devolve into.
Cuadrado is a massive step up, we haven't had a winger on form for us since Valencia '09-11

It wasn't posted as a video to show a world class performance, but what he can bring to the table in a deeper position against quality opposition. He was a great out ball, played some very dangerous ball, dribbled well, played it smart, linked nicely with others and showed the ability to take a man on.

100% passing completion ?

What?

Should be 86% for him and Navas apparently.

Just be careful with these sort of comparisons.

I think it was likely a direct response to Dans criticism that 'the stats aren't that good' more than him suggesting that Cuadrado is better than Alexis Sanchez.

I agree its pricey but is that a buy out clause, I'm not sure. At the end of the day we are not Real, PSG or City who will throw money at signings so I can understand what you are saying but I don't think we are capable of buying a player for a bargain. Everyone said Ronaldo was a bargain for 12m when he was 18 and capable of doing 56 step overs a minute. I thought that was expensive but it turned out very profitable on and off the pitch.
I'm in no way saying that of Cuardado but I do think he came into the world cup with a big reputation scored and got the most assists. Yes the opposition was not great but he still did what he had to do although he was crap against Brazil.
I'm not too bothered on the financial side as the rewards of getting into the Champions league ensure the TV money and adidas paying us the full quota of their yearly sponsorship. I do not believe the squad at present is good enough to guarantee that, I feel we will be battling out with Liverpool for the 4th spot.
If we signed Vidal another CB and Cuardado added to Shaw and Herrera I feel we can make a push for the title this year as we will have a team full of speed, goals and serious bite in midfield.

Those quotes have been edited. They were in the Express. Supposedly, that's what he said after the Liverpool game but this is what he actually said:

"I can not talk about players in the media because if I say something about other players, the price goes up."

LvG didn't mention anything about Cuadrado and the Express have taken his quotes and added Cuadrado to it. Daily Star have jumped on the bandwagon and used those quotes as well.
I concur! I watched the post match interview and he never mentioned cuadrado!! Friggin papers!

No doubt I will be flamed, but based solely on the WC, I didn't like what I saw.

LvG knows best, but as I have said previously, I am unconvinced about this boy. If we are in for him, I look forward to being proven wrong.

Sorry for the bad wording of my post but you obviously got what I meant as you are now correcting me in an arsey manner. Which in itself is pointless.

Yes Rooney has scored against 90% of opposition faced because he has played 400+ games and he is a striker, my point is it doesn't matter if Cuardado hasn't scored all his goals and assists against the likes of Juventus, Roma, Inter etc. Doesn't make him a bad player.

Wow a fantastic video showcasing testaments to both teams.

Two major points taken away from it.

1. Caudrado would fit in perfectly at United and would be a massive upgrade on the likes of Valencia on the wing, he seems to still have the electric pace strength and skill that our boy used to have with the intelligence to match. He seems smart enough to know when to distribute the ball backwards or inside depending on the defensive structure of the opposition. Something we have not seen from our wingers for donkeys years.

2. Juventus set up to double mark him in the first half. They had quite obviously considered him as a potential threat and a very large one at that, multiple times in the video you can see the left sided midfielder (think it was Vidal) check Caudrados run, he keeps an eye on him before bombing forwards. Once Caudrado gains possesion the left back and lef sided midfielder make it their mission to block off the pass. Very smart play by Juve, something I think they will miss under Allegri. In contrast Caudrado almost always plays the correct pass or attempts the correct run, brilliant stuff.

To me he would be an incredible signing and would be a star player before long.

That's a youtube video, you only see the good sides, sometimes he tries too much even when outnumbered. He is a good player, very good technically but he needs to play a little bit more with his teammates.

See 1.07 for Sturridge dance off contender.

Colombian players are as good at dancing as they are at football. Their first goal in the World Cup prompted a 1 minute choreographed dance to the crowd, and they were awesome! We haven't had any celebrations that exciting since Nani used to do those backflips or Anderson:

So to have some Colombian Salsa (or whatever their native dance is) would be mucho entertaining.

But please don't do the Bale heart, it's nauseating.
