Cristiano Ronaldo

If this is an 'anti-Ronaldo' point (I can't tell for sure, don't usually venture into the utter swamp that is this thread), it would be stronger if it wasn't the case that Messi has started to miss a fair number of penalties over the last few years, particularly in big games. With that in mind, this reads a lot like a complement to Ronaldo.

i don't think Messi is a good penalty taker. But I dont think hes missed many big game penalties.

But staying on topic with Ronaldo. CL Semi vs Barca for Utd. CL final shoot out vs Chelsea, CL shoot out vs Bayern for Madrid. 3 huge penalties blown by someone who in lesser games is usually ice cool.

In his defence he did score a penalty in that game and if he did not we would not have even gone to extra time so that has to count as a big game penalty that he scored. Also Robben took a penalty in the 90 and opted not to take one in the shoot-out due to having took one already so it shows that it is not easy to take two penalties in the same game. Here is what Robben said "it's more difficult to take a second spot kick. That's why I didn't take another one." If Ronaldo did not take a penalty in the shootout then he would have been criticised for that as well just like he was with Portugal by some people and media outlets. There was also a semi final in the Copa Del Ray where he scored vs Barca in 12/13 so he is definitely able to score them in big moments but I agree he doesn't inspire confidence in such moments like Zidane used to.

 Your initial post said 'in the league alone.' I might be being daft but I thought Messi held that record with 50.

Yep, Messi had 50 league goals the year he scored 73 in all club comps. Ronaldo currently has 23 league goals in only 13 appearances, so he has a decent chance of breaking Messi's mark. He also has a shot at catching his 73 (he has 29 in all comps at the moment).

Ok, I wasn't sure which of the two you were talking about in which post. I agree he's on stream to catch both records, and would expect him to end up somewhere around the 60 mark in the league.

Yeah, there's almost a weird obsession that's developed with comparing them. In fact, developed is wrong, since it's probably been around since about 2010 or so.

Suppose it happens with everything though. PS3 vs Xbox, Blur vs Oasis etc.

Xbox is better than PS3, Oasis is better than Blur, why don't you ask any more questions Captain Obvious???

On a serious note, Cheesy I agree with you completely: why do most of us have to draw a comparison between these two to have a definitive answer of whether Messi or Ronaldo is the better player, be it now, in the past or a future prediction when both have retired? We are in fact spoiled as football supporters to have two players of such a calibre to have such a rivalry, and to be playing at such a consistent level that we have lost a sense of reality. I honestly cannot see one, let alone two players of this calibre coming along and bringing in standards such as these two for a very long time, because they have broken so many records to get to where they are. Not Senna & Prost, Ali & Frazier, Federer & Nadal has such a fierce rivalry been created (of course people who follow such sports can argue against this, but you won't ever see so many comparisons be made). Can we not just enjoy having two of the greatest players ever to grace this game playing at the same time without resorting to having people comparing their penalty statistics against each other? I mean seriously, do you not realise how sad you sound when you resort to those levels?

Yeah, comparisons are natural to an extent and will always happen. That's the point of debating football, after all: if there's a discussion there, it'll be had. But the problem is it seems that some just watch Messi or Ronaldo to see either of them falter because they prefer the other, almost as if they support that individual player. It's kind of weird and a bit obsessive.

Glad to see that penalty given just on the basis that the defender is a moron for tugging at him like that. Dive or not, don't be fecking stupid enough to do that.

As for Ronaldo, not much to say, best player in the world and just destroying everything in front of him.

Wow, just wow. It must be terrible playing against Ronaldo, not because he is unplayable but because you can't even wrongly look at him without refereee awarding him with a foul.

Blaming defender for that "penalty" is one of the most idiotic things I have read in last few weeks.

Absolute machine. Simply the most driven, ambitious and determined individual out of the 7 odd billion people in the world. The fact that he's managed to keep up with Messi in those Barca dominating days and then still come out on top in the past couple of years is truly monumental. He looks like hes still improving further, absolutely defies human nature.

 Some real children in here, always trying to put down his stats. Another hat trick though, his productivity is just ridiculous.

I dont think the guys very objective. But at the same time he could ask you why you're wet at the thought

Presumably because he's a fan of Ronaldo. Being a fan of a player and wanting them to do well is perfectly normal. Actively disliking a certain player and wanting them to fail is a bit weird, especially if they don't play for your team's rivals or anything like that.

I haven't done the proper research but I would be interested if you could name anyone who has bee as consistent over such a long period of time.
Consistently playing at the highest level? Is that what you mean?. George Best, Puskas, Zidane, Cruyff etc etc etc etc etc the list goes on.

We didn't produce him and he gave his best years to Madrid. He is more of a Madrid legend than a United one.

We turned him into the best player in the world. And you can be a legend at more than one club, you know?

This.

A razorsharp laser penalty meticulously dispatched. Delighted with him.
Ronaldo has terminated Celta.

A goal. Another goal. Goals galore. And a slew of filthy snake tongued nobodies on the internet to whom every one of his goals felt like his zeushemian semen exploding onto their critter faces, forever pinched in grapesour expressions...

BAM BAM BAM.
Bizniz as usual for Ronaldo.
:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Spot on, it was Sporting that made him the player he is now...
Don't how much is looking for a bite as I have not read all the previous comments but a players development isn't just his youth football. Would he have developed the same way at Chelsea or Liverpool as he did at United under Fergie?

As big a role Sporting would have played in his upbringing, United also played a pivotal role in his development, if not bigger. Sir Alex was a major influence on Ronaldo, I don't think he would have developed into the player he is, if he went to a different club.

I just.... wow.

Scary to think how many goals he can end up with tbh. He doesn't look like slowing any time soon.

He's 29, so has maybe another 2 years at this level? Looking at how well he keeps himself in shape though, wouldn't surprise me if he can continue at this level for longer.

I would say another two years as the BPITW - but he can still remain productive for Real until his mid 30s imo. What's interesting is what he decides to do after that, if he wants to step down a few levels after Real then his final number could become something special.

23 goals in 13 games already and 8 assists on top of that. The lad is really not looking like slowing down anytime soon. Incredible.

He could go 10 matches without scoring in the league, and still have a 1:1 ratio

He looks a dead cert for Ballon D'or this season and with Real looking good in the league and in Europe, with Ronaldo in form like this, he could match Messi's 4 next season.

As NoLogo has said, he also has 8 assists. He has 23 goals and 8 assists in 13 games. So he's contributed to 31 of his teams goals in 13 games, that's 2.5 goals a game. Incredible stats!!

Yesterday's penalty from another angle. This shit has to stop.

Also, @CLARiiON , Cristiano is 4th in the all-time penalty rankings of La Liga, with 43. Penev has 44, Koeman 45... Hugo Sánchez at #1 with 56. Messi is joint 7th, together with Villa on 32. Hugol needed 12 seasons, Penev 10... Koeman only 6 and Cristiano did it in 5 and a half seasons (still two behind Koeman though one suspects that won't be the case at the end of the season).

Thanks! I knew you would have more details on this list. I got from media reports that he had 45 penalties before last night game. Happy to stand corrected.
