those definitions of athleticism are bollocks anyway.

Tennis players are some of the fittest most athletic sportsman in the word who dash around for up to 5 hours at a time in some games. None of them are particularly muscular though.

Would argue that some American Football or basketball players are considerably more athletic than most tennis players.

No, but as being athletic is defined thusly:

"physically strong and well-developed; muscular" tfd.com

"characterized by heavy frame, large chest, and powerful muscular developmen" - Merriam

Which one fits Ronaldo and which one fits Messi? Saying then that it depends on how you look at it is all about how you look at it, not at how it is defined and what athleticism really is about.

I don't think I'm too far off the mark. Don't you think Ronaldo's game has benefited from being extremely atheletic? Don't you think Bale's has? Giggs has a completely different build than Bale, so he probably wouldn't benefit from it as much. Giggs was, imo, a better player than Bale - and my point has never been that Ronaldo is necessarily better than Messi. My point is that one should accept that their games are different and that Ronaldo can do things Messi cannot, and vice versa.

One of Ronaldo's main strengths is his athletecism - he is extremely fast, running with and without the ball. How often doesn't the team just put the ball behind the defense for Ronaldo to run at - no defender keeps up with him. You cannot do that with Messi, so they play a different game - that is pretty much what I said about it.

It's all getting quite silly as I opted to talk about them being not similar in terms of build as proof that they are very different players, then people start talking about licking chests, legs that are sexy and what not.

Ronaldo is as good as he is much due to his extreme athleticism, whereas Messi isn't. To call Messi a better athlete is just pure and simple bs. Ronaldo is clearly the stronger and better athlete, but Messi may be the better footballer - not all agree on this, so why laugh every time someone says it? Their stats are pretty much the same, it has been argued times over that Messi probably plays in the best team in history. Some people just prefer Ronaldo's directness and physical aspect of the game, whereas some prefer Messi's technique and flair.

They're really not. I take it you missed Brwned's thread on productivity a few days ago. There is a big disparity in their productivity over the past year, much bigger than there is between Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic for example.

Also, over the past six years the stats show that Messi is the marginally better goal scorer, much more economic in his use of the ball and almost twice more likely to set up a goal. I wouldn't say that's "pretty much the same"

In those six years Ronaldo played in teams that were better than, or as good as the equivalent Barcelona team at the time for arguably 3 years in total (United 06-08 and Madrid last season) so the "best team" argument doesn't wash either.

Interview with Cristiano Ronaldo Part 1:

Cristiano, has 2012 been a good year for you?

A very good year, since we have were classed as champions of Spain, winners of the hardest Championship in Europe. In front of Barcelona, our rival, it is always best to do better. So, this was an excellent year as far as a team is concerned, but also as far as being an individual is concerned.

Do you think this has been your best year, since you started playing for Real Madrid?

Perhaps. Altogether, I think my first three seasons Madrilenes have been pretty much the same. The big difference, is that we won La Liga. And, in my eyes, it is that, that counts the most.

Could you remember the best moments?

Personally, I remember very well when we went to Barcelona and we won 2-1.

A match where you scored...

Yes, the second goal, the one for that got us the victory. It is without doubt the best souvenir of the last few months.

And the worst?

Without doubt, going out against Bayern in the semi-finals of the Champions League on penalties. The same sort of elimination against Spain in the semi-finals of the European Championship, always penalty shootouts. That is what makes me unhappy.

When all is done, have you known more success than failures?

To be honest, it is the same. Whatever club and with the selection, I would have liked to go further in the International competitions. I would say that I have had quite a bit of satisfaction, but I cannot forget the difficult moments that I have lived.

Do you think you have been the best player of the year?

I am not the best person to answer this question and to speak about that. From my point of view, I estimate that my team hit its peak. Not only myself, but equally my teammates, who have also played very well.

We are naturally coming to the Ballon D'Or...

Yes.

Do you think you merit to receive it this year?

I will ignore that. It doesn't depend on me. There are people who vote, the trainers, captains. Me, I have no control over it. We will see what the votes will give.

If you had the possibility, would you vote for yourself?

It's true, we do not have the right to vote for ourselves. However, if I had the possibility, of course I would vote for myself. Elsewhere, all the other players would do exactly what I would do too, that seems pretty clear to me.

As the Captain of the Portuguese team, who are you going to choose?

For the time being, I have not even thought about the question.

Really?

Really.

But, even so, you have a small idea as to who you are going to vote for?

More or less. I am going to vote in all conscience for the players who have won major titles, those same players who have played extremely well throughout the year. It is very possible that I will vote for a Spanish player. For the other two, I cannot tell you anymore yet.

A Spanish player. From Real Madrid or FC Barcelona?

(He smiles) From Real Madrid of course!

Casillas for example?

Do not insist, I am not going to give a name.

It is a secret, some information that you don't wish to divulge?

It is not a secret since, anyway, you will know when the results will go public. It is just right that, I am not totally sure. The only thing that I am sure of, is that I will vote for a Real Madrid player and for two players who have won major trophys.

You seem to hold this prize pretty close to your heart, am I wrong?

All the awards are important. La Liga, la copa del rey, the Champions League...

But, this is an individual prize.

The truth, it is an individual prize, but it is also a team prize, because whoever wins this prize, wouldn't have done it without his teammates.

Would it bother you if you didn't win it?

I am not going to say that I don't care, but the principle is that the team wins, that I help my teammates and that I am present in their success.

You were very happy in 2008 when France Football designated you. Don't you feel like being distinguished for a second time?

Yes, I was happy, very happy. All footballers are happy when they receive such a prize of such importance. It is a really happy moment to be crowned as the best. But, I do not want to think about it. There is a long time to go. There are a lot of matches to play, and I have a lot of goals to score...

Who are you going to put at the top of the managers list?

Mine, evidently, because he is the best! After, it is complicated. I will see it more clearly when it calms down.

With Mourinho, you have a privileged relationship with him. You don't get the impression that you are his favourite?

Privileged, I do not think so.

Importantly, "El Mister", doesn't stop repeating that you should be the Ballon D'Or this year.

It is his point of view, and I am very happy about it. By the same token, I could say the same thing about him. He is a real professional, he always gives his best. He has not only shown that in Spain, but also in all the other leagues where he has worked. By winning La Liga, which is the hardest league, he merits to win.

If you don't win the Ballon D'Or, who do you think will win in your opinion?

I don't think about it. Me, I think I win everytime. Now, if it is not me, it will be another great player. And, I will respect the choice.

takem from the newbies, it's CR interview in France Football and i think it's worth sharing it with all of you

Interview with Cristiano Ronaldo Part 2:

Can Leo Messi win it for the fourth time?

Messi can win it, like Xavi, Iniesta. And don't forget Drogba, Falcao.

They oppose you and Messi quite often. What do you think of this rivalry?
It is good for the media. They put us in opposition permanently, the newspapers are sure to sell more everyday, same for the television audience which goes up.

Do you find it normal?

The truth, it is all that which is tiring me out...

Why?

I get the impression that we are obligated to prove every single day that we are on top form. It is tiring, even if I am prepared. However, I don't like it when they compare me to other players, and to other people. These were from another period, or from other teams. Finally, I have started to live with it now.

However, everyone agrees to say that only two footballers dominate the scene, yourself and Messi. So, the comparison is inevitable, is it not?

Perhaps, but, sincerely, I don't know how to respond to you.

What differences do you see between him and yourself?

We are different, that is clear. We do not evolve in the same team, we play in different systems. He grew up with the club since he was very young, when he was still a child. He knows the club perfectly. He has demonstrated for many years that he is very good. He plays in one of the best formations in the world, and in that sense, it is a very good thing for him.

What is your opinion of Leo Messi?

I see him as a good team player, who does things in his own way. He is a player I respect a great deal.

They say that the Argentine is without doubt has more of a team spirit than you on the pitch, that you are an individual. Do you agree?

Of course not!! I am not an individual player. Those who understand football know it very well too. In any case, I don't feel like going into this debate, it doesn't interest me. One more time, I am not the one who can respond to you.

Could you take a holiday together?

(He looks at his agent, the press officer.) That is to say...Well, all I can say to you is that I do not have a problem with him.

More importantly, things were said against him?

When was that?

At the European Championships, when a year earlier, you reminded him that he had been eliminated in front of his own crowd in the Copa America. It was not very nice.

The problem with me, is that when people say something, it gets blown out of proportion!! It is nothing new. The moment Cristiano speaks, there is a large audience and I give them something to write. For this reason, it is normal. Now, people who know me very well, know who I really am. What makes me angry, is when people write about me without actually knowing me. And that happens every single day. However, don't worry about it, I know how to deal with it.

...

jesus christ was the interview done by messi in a wig and glasses? the questions just seem designed to set him off

Interview with Cristiano Ronaldo Part 3:

Why did you say such a thing?

When I pronounce words like those, it is because I am unhappy, angry. And so when I am in this state, I happen to say things that I do not mean.

Do you regret this personal attack?

Yes, evidently! When I have finally calmed down, I say to myself that I shouldn't say things like that. I know that, sometimes, I am mistaken. However, we are human beings, we commit errors. Afterwards, we need to assume them. The good things like the bad things.

So, you are not the person that we generally describe?

Me, I am a friend his friends. If you are good with me, I will be good to you. I know what my attitude is like on the pitch and it is not pleasing, but it isn't me. You just need to realise that I am a competitor.

Friends with your friends. And the enemy of your enemies?

But I do not have any enemies.

Sincerely?

yes, you can believe me. I am not someone who looks back and hold something against someone. I can blame you for about 5 minutes, however, with me, that passes quickly.

Do you consider yourself to be a man, a player, modest?

Yes.

You seem to have a very high opinion of yourself?

But it is important to have the self-esteem. You need to know how to appreciate yourself, to recognise your own qualities. Me, I find that it is a correct attitude, but each one thinks what he hears.

Do you have the sentiment that those who don't have you in their heart are mistaken about you?

It is clear. Yes, that, it is clear! But, in a certain manner, I can understand it.

Why?

It is just a problem with communication. Not only here, but all over the world, we communicate badly. People don't realise that we are in reality and give a false impression. And then, they invent things about me. It hurts me to be judged, to be crucified. I must live with that. The people who I share my life with, the players who train with me, they know who I am.

And who are you?

I am a normal man in my world, with people who love me, with my family. I think I don't have my defaults when it comes to life in a community. I am a real friend, I defend what needs to be defended. I would like to thank the people who go with Cristiano and I will be with them until I die. On this plan, I don't think I am that bad.

What are the small defaults that you have?

I am hot-tempered. I can get angry very quickly, because I am someone who hates to lose, and when it happens, I lose my head. However, I will repeat it again to you, in the 5 minutes that follow, I have forgotten. I will have gone onto other things.

What are your greatest qualities?

Erm...

Would you ever be humble, for example?

In my way, yes, I think I follow it. Now, too much humility is not good. Where I was born, in Portugal, we say "too much humility, it is vanity." So, if I say that I am very humble...(He smiles.)

...

This is unbelievable. Just unbelievable. I don't think I've ever seen such an unashamedly provocative interview. There's no attempt to make it good or readable, just this horrific barrage of Ballon d'Or and Messi questions in desperation for a soundbite to take out of context.

Parody of itself. Even a quick run-through of 'favourite food, film, sexual position' etc would have been more worthwhile.

Could you take a holiday together?

(He looks at his agent, the press officer.) That is to say...Well, all I can say to you is that I do not have a problem with him.

 that question and that response. Some innuendo there. :D

Who are you going to put at the top of the managers list?

Mine, evidently, because he is the best! After, it is complicated. I will see it more clearly when it calms down.

Didn't even mentioned Fergie. He should be the first person to mention whenever someone asks him about that, but somehow he just sees mourinho now.

He didn't mention Manchester united, our fans, Fergie or anything that goes with that in last two years, and there are still his songs being singed at our every game. That is really depressing.

Mourinho is his current manager of course he will vote for him! He even tells us himself that his votes will be completely influenced by his club colleagues!

I think he voted for SAF before in some other year or award anyway.

Didn't even mentioned Fergie. He should be the first person to mention whenever someone asks him about that, but somehow he just sees mourinho now.

There have got to be more important things for you to worry about.

I don't care about that for a 1%, since I don't like Ronaldo anyway, it's just an observation.

Get a grip, he's talked up Fergie in plenty of interviews, even stating he sees SAF as a father figure. He's not going to bring up United in every interview.

If this is a joke, there should be white text. There are people on the caf crazy enough to pull this shit in all seriousness.

If it's not, what does the fact that I thought it might be tell you?

Get a grip, he's talked up Fergie in plenty of interviews, even stating he sees SAF as a father figure. He's not going to bring up United in every interview.

When? In that year after he left, while Pellegrini was their manager he talked he missed united, and in first few months when mourinho took Real Madrid job he said Fergie and Mourinho are the best menagers in the world. Since that, he never mentioned anything related to united.

Interview with Cristiano Ronaldo Part 3:

Have you always been like that or did it come with age and success?

Always, since I was a child and for that, I will never change. I always say what I think. Like my agent says, I am not hypocritical enough! I think that it is good. I was educated in this way. I am not going to show an aspect that isn't me. I don't hide myself. I am who I am and I congratulate myself.

Your iconic status doesn't allow you to lead a normal life. Are there any days where it becomes unbearable?

I do not often have the pleasure of walking peacefully where I feel like it, that is for sure. Though it is logical since I have done a great deal of things over the last few years, and also because of the person I am. I just need to adapt. I know I can do it. Though, there are days where it can be unbearable. I miss the days where I was capable of doing the small things that don't make even more happy but, more peacefully. It is the price to pay for being famous. It is a heavy price, but I am not going to complain.

Are there any areas where you can go without being seen?

Yes, my home! I cannot go for a walk in the condominium where I live, and there, no-one bothers me. Elsewhere, it is impossible. However, it is logical, it is a form of acknowledgment of your work, of your success. On the other side, it is a headache to not be alone, to not live like you have wished to.

You are one of the best attackers in the world, but you are not the most well-paid. How can you explain this?

It's like that, but I am not complaining. In life, each get what they deserve. On the otherhand, I do not even want to know if I am one of the best players or one of the worst ever. I do not play for money. I play the sport I love, for the love of the football shirt I wear. If I played for money, of course I would be at another club.

So, you do not complain. With that being said, your agent here is currently working on this, is he not?

All you have to do is ask him the question! For me, it is not something that occupies my mind. Like you said, I have someone with me who is more than adequate to deal with this. However, all those who know me, know that I am not obsessed with money. Neither by the fact that I play or don't, to be replaced. I am not like that and I will never be.

Are you going to prolong your contract with Real Madrid?

I don't know. I have another 3 years left on the contract. At that moment, I will be 30 years old and we will see what happens.

Have you read the news lately?

No, I don't read it.

Our fellow journalists of La Gazzetta Dello Sport sees you, you and Mourinho at Paris Saint Germain...

Oh really?

They reckon a transfer of around €100m.

Very good. (He laughs.) This lad is expensive!

With a salary clearly much greater than at the moment, evidently.

Of course not, believe me, that doesn't interest me at all! I cannot be thinking about that. I feel good at Real Madrid, and I will continue there. After, the future, only God knows.

So, this event could be a real possibility?

In life, everything is possible. Nothing is impossible. At the moment, I do not want to even think about a new club, to these stories of a contract. I am focused on the obligation to play well and to win. At the end, we will see.

...

Interview with Cristiano Ronaldo Final Part:

PSG is a club going upwards. As a professional, do you follow them closely or even from long distance with regards to their projects?

No, that doesn't interest me. No more than those of Paris, Manchester or Chelsea. It is true, these are all great clubs. For their own personal ego all the players love to be connected to with them. However, personally, it doesn't bother me. I am here and I want to win trophies here.

Do you know Paris?

Not very well, even if I have visited the city as a tourist.

Returning back to the Ballon D'Or. What is your principal objectif, The Champions League?

La Liga, the cup, the Champions League. Here, at a club of this level, we need to win trophies. One, two, three titles, in any case, win something.

Curiously, you have only one Champions League trophy in your honours...

We are going to win it this year.

That is a good declaration!

(He laughs) Me, I always think we are going to win. I work hard for that, and we are going to work hard to obtain this objective.

Your manager dreams of a Real Madrid-Barcelona final. And you?

I don't particularly hope so. If I could choose, then that would be great. There is still a great deal of work to be done to get to the final.

There, you are prudent!

No. I fully understand that the public would like to see a confrontation between Real Madrid and Barcelona. However, there are other teams. It wouldn't displease me to go up against Manchester for example. However, before that, there is a little bit of work to be done. We need to qualify, and then it will be time to see what happens next.

Are you obsessed by this competition?

This European trophy means a lot to the club and the supporters. We, the players, we feel it like all Madrilenes, all those who adore Real Madrid, desire more than anything to win a 10th Champions League in its history.

Have you already said goodbye to La Liga?

No. There are still another 29 matches to play and loads of points to play for. We are in agreement about the retard, a large disadvantage, but all is possible. We must fight until the end. Evidently, we don't have the right to lose anymore points. We are conscient of the difficulties, but we are now ready to face them.

What are the dreams that push you?

Win, to always win. With the Real Madrid, with my international selection.

And, as a man, what are your desires?

Already, to be a good father to my little 2 year old boy who lives here with me. Then, to have some more children, no less than one or two more, we will see. That depends on a lot of things.

End of interview and translation is finished.

...

He didn't mention Manchester united, our fans, Fergie or anything that goes with that in last two years, and there are still his songs being singed at our every game. That is really depressing.

Agreed.

The guy has no love, nothing or you can say he is a professional not too emotionally attached.

I would call him a cnut.

Disgraceful tbh that people sing his songs instead of some other greats.

Ronaldo said:

He wants to kill us :(

As much as I miss him, this Ronaldo-Messi saga is very tedious and I don't regret not having that to put up with. The interview is for the most part ruined by that.

For the most part? There's not a single good question in that interview. The only time they really leave off Messi and Barcelona is when they A) Try to make him admit to being a shit human being, B) Try and make him admit to a rift in Madrid caused by the Ballon d'Or, and C) Try and make him show some sort of disloyalty to either Real or Mourinho.

When? In that year after he left, while Pellegrini was their manager he talked he missed united, and in first few months when mourinho took Real Madrid job he said Fergie and Mourinho are the best menagers in the world. Since that, he never mentioned anything related to united.

When Fergie won the FIFA President's award they had a clip of Ronaldo praising him. I can't remember all the specific times but I've seen at least 3 or 4 interviews where he praises Ferguson. There was one in his "Castrol Tested to the Limit" or whatever as well.

He should have said this, 0:11s

Thanking him for his time at United and referring to him as a "father figure" is probably the highest praise he could pay him. Not only did Fergie mould him into arguably the best player in the world, but he built up a good, loving relationship with him.

Edit: I see Bebe has responded almost identically to me regarding Amar's posts. Oops.

Great minds and all that.
