Cristiano Ronaldo

True and maybe Mourinho might come under pressure if they don't do well in that comp this year but like I said I don't think you can really fault Ronaldo that much. He's doing more than his fair share and I think in general they might be slightly more lenient given Barca are genuinely one of the all time great teams.

I'm not faulting him, I'm just posing a hypothetical question. I doubt they laid out 80 million quid to bag the player that would help win la liga and the copa de rey. For what it's worth I think they probably will win the CL within the next season or two.

I'm sure they would want a cl at some point, not just cause of ronaldo but all the other investment too but I also think there probably is some recognition that in the league they're against a very strong team, someone who's been dominating them for a few years and so if ronaldo can contribute to them winning a few league titles they'd probably be happy with that.

The Madrid fans decided the 80m was fair price a couple of seasons back. It's all about context, the Barcelona treble hurt Madrid badly. Mourinho and Ronaldo have stopped Barcelona from having more trebles. It might not sound like a big thing but imagine if it was Liverpool (or City) walking off with everything.

Madrid's mood is different now, a Copa or a Liga - even battled out against Barca isn't enough, only a CL can truly satisfy. A CL this year won't just make Madrid fans think he was worth the money, it'll make him a star. No CL and it'll remain just a good business deal.

He was brilliant last night. Made Maicon look useless. Made Kompany look average. I was impressed.

In my opinion he has been the best footballer in the world over the past 12 months. He is truly immense. There are many imitations of him but only one who can truly live up to the hype.

Agree.

Cue the Messi fanbois invasion... :smirk:

Of course now that two anonymous people on a football forum agreed with your world view, that naturally makes the opinion of the rest of the football world invalid.

But I'm glad you are still alive and didn't jump out of a window to protest Real fans being so mean to Ronnie.

Terrible shame that the poor boy (he said, whilst being younger than Ronaldo) is spiralling into depression. 6 goals in his last 2 games, 12 in 10 overall so far. Where will it end? Who can save him?

:(

Last 2 goals of his hat trick were of terrific quality... under Jose he's improved such a lot, fun to watch and super effective.

Not only under Mourinho, when Ronaldo arrived at Real he immediately raised his level.

Yesterday I watched his debut game for us and he was so raw. I knew he was special, but I could never imagine him becoming such a great player.

we got our pants pulled down and jimmy savilled on this deal didnt we?

Particularly as we have regressed since his departure. The money received has not been invested in anyone with anywhere near the potential or talent he has.

He was consistently our get out of jail card, he's a true matchwinner. He made United more than the sum of it's parts.

He scores every type of goal - more so than any other player in my opinion.

totally agree with this.

RVP has showed glimpses of world class ability. at times (glimpses here and there) he has looked a million miles better than the rest of our players. only his signing has made me appreciate how far back we went in terms of talent and ability when ronalso (and tevez) left.

To be fair, that's not an easy thing to do.

Who has near the potential or talent that he does? Messi, that's it, and you can't get him for £80m.

That winner against Fulham in 06/07 season . Take on the whole defense from the halfway line. Knew it right there we'll win the league

Again at the time of the deal we never had any idea he'd be this good and consistent for Real Madrid. It's too easy now to say we should have asked for more.Easy and borderline stupid tbh

eh there was quite a number of people on here from day 1 in june 2009 that said we got shit on in the deal.

considering what became of the 80 million, i would've rather we kept ronaldo (he had 2 or 3 years left on his contract) and let him walk on a free at age 26-27.

What does this mean?

I suppose what I was trying to get at is there are many players who have similarities with him...in the way they try to play the game....but none come close to matching his remorseless consistency and determination to better himself.

Since he burst onto the world scene his blueprint is visible in a lot of players who like to run with the ball. His influence is far reaching but none have come close to emulating him....yet.

Hope that makes sense? Correct me if I'm talking balls.

That's it. A goal out of absolutely nothing but sheer talent and determination. We really miss that. You only have to look at Real against City to see what the effect is.

Grrrr.

At that point apart from Chelsea & Man City no other club except for R.Madrid would of paid that money for him. You got almost £30mill above the current world record transfer fee and you think you got done over? Also consider the fact he would not of joined any club except them so I think you're having a laugh if you think that.

Absolute nonsense and I'd say if anything he has justified his £80mill price tag because if he was scoring 25 goals a season I think R.Madrid might feel hard done by.

Not too sure about that. We already knew how consistent and good he was in general, it was never going to be a case of getting worse at Madrid. It's an easier league for a player like Ronaldo. Look at the predictions thread on his goals for them, people were saying near a goal a game, or over, some had over 50 goals in a season....which is basically what he want to do. None of his ability or statistics for Madrid has been a surprise for many people, and a lot of that is evidenced on this very forum.

Considering Perez claims the Kaka deal was okay, he would have been more than happy paying 80m for 25 goals a season.

I remember there were some who thought he wouldn't do so well against the smarter, more technical defenders of La Liga, as opposed to the carthorses of the PL. Some said he'd be nobody without Rooney at his side. Others reckoned running away to join the circus would send him into the traditional fat, lazy, partyloving spiral of decline.

Almost everyone wondered how well he'd handle the dressing room atmosphere, the media circus, the commercial pressure, the fan hostility to the pricetag - and to be fair, he's definitely had his ups and downs with all of that.

So, no surprise that he survived and thrived, but we got a fair price at the time. In fact I seem to remember a fair spread of the caf would have sold him for 60m or less the summer before, 20m in 2006, and maybe just our money back in 2005. Not me of course, I always loved the daft bugger and was just sad to see him go.
