A pick-n-mix from random Spanish press sources then...

Thanks for that, interesting stuff.

Am I being incredibly naive in looking at this whole "campaign" for the ballon d'or thing from a club - is this just Madrid trying to throw their weight around and influence people, or is this generally the way things work with these awards? I can't say I looked Messi's hat-trick, or Ronaldo's win whilst with us or Kaka before that as being on anything but merit

He needs to start referring to himself in the third person and soundtracking his day-to-day life. He could have his entourage blasting out 'Stronger' by Kanye West as he walks down the stairs in the morning.

Ronaldo's new phrase is a quote by Jim Rohn.

"You don’t get paid for the hour. You get paid for the value you bring to the hour"

I'd send most footballers to a poor nation for some therapy. They'd soon realise how fortunate and privileged they are in life...

More seriously, I've read in some places a theory about Ronaldo and depression and references made with other child prodigies like Michael Jackson. All Im saying is if its genuine medical depression, you know as well as I do that no money, woman or material benefit in THIS world can help alleviate that.

I think that unlikely, that this is some kind of ploy by Ronnie to get something he wants (though I have no idea what that might be), but if its depression, I can only but sympathise. So many lost souls 'have it all' but in reality have nothing.

I hated him for leaving ... but in hindsight that was just blinded tribal support for our club ... very soon after he left, I was fine with his reasons for leaving and for what its worth, wished him all the best ... Ronnie gave us as much as the club gave me, his conscience can be clean when it comes to his time with us. He's a good lad.

In the 2% chance it is depression, I think we should not joke about it.

Im getting soft!

Attention whore like he always was, and that's it.

I was just messing bro. It's more agents these days than players dictating terms at clubs. Ronaldo by accounts is a great lad. I've even heard he used to brew up for office girls whilst at United, and was a very humble guy.

He was undoubtedly one of the best players to grace Old Trafford.

You would know better than most of us.

Out of interest, how many years have you had the privilege to go to Old Trafford, and in that time who is the best you've seen? You're welcome to define 'best' in whatever way you choose.

40 years

Ronaldo, Best and Scholes ( in no particular order)

Best would have been way ahead had he looked after himself physically and had not retired at an age where he would have reached his prime.

wow. That's good enough for me.

Best really was the best! I can only imagine!

Sometimes the winner is obvious because both the performances and the trophies said so - like Ronaldo in 2008 or Messi in 2009.

Sometimes it's less obvious, you could make a claim for a United player in 1999 or Xavi/Iniesta/Sneidjer in 2010. That's when the campaigning kicks in and that's really the situation again this year.

Most of the voters aren't watching these players week in, week out so the words of the press, of people like Blatter and Platini, or of a few top managers, players etc can move some votes. Plus there's a lot of inertia in the system with voters picking players on reputation and history, so some of those can be stirred to think again. That's why there is scope for a campaign, some years.

Best was also unfortunate to play on terrible pitches. Old Trafford was one of the worst in those days, in fact right up to Sir Alex taking over.

question: WAS RON A BIGGER SUPERSTAR AT UNITED OR NOW AT MADRID?

could the answer to this be the problem, he's an alpha male , dominant and wants to be top dog. he aint top dog in spain.

I think he was more loved at United. He was revered as a phenomenon by the media and Fergie had an incredible amount of respect for him. At Madrid, he doesn't seem to get the same recognition for some strange reason, especially from the fans. It's weird, because even at that club, he's miles ahead of everyone else.

You really are a privileged man... I am so jealous.

Hope you are doing well Sults.

Damn, Sults! I had you down for a 20-something year old.

Hmmm...can he be depressed?

He doesn't seem like the type of person who typically suffers from depression. I mean he's extremely confident and has everything he ever wanted (except his father). He's also very close to home and family.

I guess the only problem I could see is if he is being under appreciated at Madrid. I wouldn't be surprised though. The management there is a shambles.

One thing that I really don't understand is if he really wanted to leave why wait until the transfer window closes to make such a statement?
Maybe he's a bit depressed around this time of year remembering his father's death offcourse, but I just find it a bit strange, especially just after winning a cup against Barca. That's why I think it is a ploy to try and get a new contract.

Altough I couldn't fault him if he wasn't happy about the club not doing enough for him winning the Ballon d'or especially if the rumour is true that Casillas and Ramos wanted Iniesta to win it, which would be a bit outrageous if you ask me.

To be fair if he really wants to leave he probably can't just bung in a transfer request and go right lads I'm off now.

He'd have to make it this long protracted thing so the club will eventually come to the conclusion that he's dragging the entire place down with his mood. Basically he'd have to take a run up.

I don't think this is about leaving Madrid to be honest.

That's just wrong coming from you Sults.;)

It's either the fans or players in the dressing room that are bothering Ronaldo if I had to guess. If he leaves Madrid then we would obviously be heavily linked and if we don't get him, I hope he doesn;t join another English team.

Agreed but I'd add Roy Keane and Cantona to that list.

There is not a type, that suffers from depression. It can attack anyone. The problem is people try to find a reason for a person to be depressed and when they look from the outside see only wealth and wonder what they have to be depressed about. It does not work like that. Look at Gary Speed.

Now I am not saying that Ronaldo has clinical depression, but if he does (and as he has suggested it is sadness at a work related matter I doubt it) it could be all manner of things. there does not have to be a specific trigger.

He's always been the player that needed the occasional arm around the shoulder, but he'll never get it at Madrid and he won't get it from maureen.

Mourinho has always taken good care of his players, so that should not be a problem.

Another one here who picks Best. Whats often forgotten with respect to best is that he was with us for 11 years and he was our top goal scorer for 5 out of a sequence of 6 seasons. Every time he got the ball you could sense the buzz in the crowd.

He had to play on shit pitches, dealt with tackles from behind without the hollywoods and the balls and boots in his day were nowhere near as good as todays.

But mostly he could simply do things nobody else could.

Too much is made of when he left the game so people tend to forget how long he was with us and how massive he was for us for a long stretch of time.

You would know better than most of us.

Well thats not true at all, Mourinho is superb at the man management and off field assistance to players.
