Cristiano Ronaldo

Matter of time before he signs a bumper new deal at Real Madrid and we put this to bed forever.

I've never thought this at all on before. But if Real do indeed sign Bale for a massive fee, I might revise that opinion a little. It would be hard for them to resist getting the majority of that money back on a player who would be competing for a position with their new record-fee signing. And in terms of persuading Ronaldo to come here, and not to flit off into PSG's swimming pool of money, I'm sure Fergie would be willing to have a word with the lad.

Like I say, even the slight possibility is contingent on this rumoured Bale deal actually happening.

Right, I am in for this 100%. I never spaculate on these things generally; but I am feeling very happily confident this deal will go through.

Four months ago I felt this -- Ronaldo coming home -- was a sure thing. When Fergie put his chewing gum down for the last time I did a 180. Now I'm creeping back, but I've turned around only about 45 degrees so far.

I need more than shadows of smoke to see the fire!

I'll drive Rooney to Chelsea myself if we sign Ronaldo

The free kick thing which everyone keeps mentioning just isn't an issue either.

Remember when Beckham left to go to Madrid and everyone wanted to know whether he or Roberto Carlos would get to keep taking them? Well, they took some each, and decided between themselves who fancied each particular kick.

Anyone who thinks Bale and Ronaldo would have little arguments every time they won a foul in the opponents half needs to wise up.

Was that deliberate?

Yes, it was.

A nice post from Reddit on the matter :
Why Ronaldo Transferring to United this Summer is Logical
Speculation Ahead
This post is highly speculative and uses both highly regarded sources, and ones of poor origin. If this is not your cup of tea, keep scrolling.
I will start this off with what we can reasonably assume based on reports:
  1. United want Ronaldo back
  2. Ronaldo has two years left on his deal
  3. The "Beckham" law is being discontinued, and taxes are going up on football stars
  4. World Cup years are the most bountiful for sponsorships
  5. Ronaldo and Perez were supposed to start negotiations in early July
  6. United have talked to sponsors for assistance in funding Ronaldo's transfer
  7. Spanish teams are having funding issues, even teams such as Madrid
  8. Madrid receives 40% of all commercial royalties from their players.
Things that are more speculative:
  1. David Gill flew to Madrid the day Fergie's news about retirement broke early.
  2. Ronaldo has put his house on the market in Spain.
  3. Negotiations have yet to leak to the media in Spain, with no progress being made
There is lots of moving pieces here. Much of it centers on money, primarily how much Ronaldo receives in his commercial deals. As he is the most marketable star of football, Ronaldo is far more incentivized by his commercial revenue instead of his wage. For years, the agreement with Madrid worked, since he was under the Beckham tax rule, that kept this revenue high even with a 40% slice going to Madrid.
This Madrid strategy of taking 40% of commercial revenue is why Real can pay such hefty fees, because over the contract length they are generally able to make a profit. A conservative estimate this morning on my twitter feed had Bale making Real a 10% IRR even with a €100m fee upfront.
With taxes going up and the most lucrative sponsorship year about to start, Ronaldo and Real could be at a deadlock over the % of royalties. Real needs this to be able to fund future stars, as well as wages for players in a tight spanish baking environment.
In United, Ronaldo gets much more control over his commercial revenue in a much more friendly tax environment. He would make United an immediate champions league contender, and continued to be adored by fans.
United have a huge price upfront, but it is supported by their sponsors, as well as some increased revenue, and more club sponsorship contracts due to having Ronaldo on the team.
The only loser here would be Perez, but if Ronaldo and Jorge Mendes will not bend on royalties, he has a deep problem.

Don't do it to yourself mate, at least not 100%. Give yourself 10% to get out and feel less suicidal if he rejects us this summer.

Christ, I feel like I am fully committed now. His house going up for sale in Madrid? That has tipped it over the edge!

Selling it, stopping the rent for his house near Manchester so he can buy it, naming his new Dog Davidmoyo, going to Tony's house and threatening him to give him his number back, shit is kicking off all over the place.

I love how many of the comments are along the lines of 'if Ronaldo came then - thank god! - we can dump Rooney finally.' Any sane fan surely just salivates at the idea of a team with Ronaldo, RVP and Rooney in it.

Rather odd that Bale and Ronaldo have identical haircuts these days, except that the former looks like a well groomed extra on the set of the latest Planet of the Apes film.

Rarely have a haircut and a face suited each other so badly (almost every day in David James' life excluded, obviously.)

The bale signing really raises eyebrows and only adds fuel to the fire that Ronaldo would be offloaded. Obviously united would be the favourable destination.

I would imagine, especially given that Perez has previously bought Ronaldo and Kaka in the same summer, that he envisages Ronaldo and Bale playing together.

Maybe. But Ronaldo and Kaka play in different, complementary positions. Whereas Bale is essentially the younger, less good Ronaldo. And neither of them is much good in any other position.

Ronaldo isnt much good in any other position..

Seriously????

You 'seriously???' don't understand what I mean there? Obviously he's good in other positions compared to your average joe not-the-second-best-player-in-the-world player. But he's significantly worse in any other position. And it would be stupid to play either your £80mil second-best-in-the-world player or your £85mil record signing anywhere other than their absolute best position.

Stick him on the right and he is no longer second best player in the world?

He made his name on the right and has been successful down the middle too...

However, I do think there is a case to say that they are preparing for Ronaldos departure. But I'm not completely sure it'll be this summer.

When Real have played him down the middle he's been much less effective. As for playing on the right, it's been a very long time since he's done that. In fact I don't think he's played there once for Madrid, and I imagine there's a reason for that.

Cause he wants to play on the left.. not because he cant play on the right.

It all depends on whether he is willing to second to the team. He wants to win things, if he allows to roam a bit and give Bale the left flank then there is no reason that they can't play in the same team.

You really want him back, eh?

I think we're interested, but it would take an actual transfer request from Ronnie to make it happen, which is increasingly unlikely this summer.
