I don't disagree that Ronaldo is the better player (he's the second best in the world, after all). But I don't like the idea that we would run the club that way. You can't criticise Rooney for not being loyal if we would discard him the second the option to swap him for a shinier toy turned up. I like the idea that we always look to add to what we've got, and to build on a stable base. Our first priority should always be to keep our best players. Our second should be to have a constant stream of young talent coming up behind them, both kids from our own academy and shrewd purchases from elsewhere. Our third should be to add ready-made superstars when the opportunity or necessity arises. Swapping Ronaldo for Rooney fulfils the third requirement but violates the first, and that's why I wouldn't want us to do it. That, more than just buying Ronaldo outright, would be 'galactico' behaviour - constantly selling great players in order to replace them with even better players from elsewhere. It suggests that there's no difference between a player who's already at the club and a player who isn't besides money, which seems sad, and too much like City for my taste. We should be running a club, not a talent merry-go-round.
I'm not trying to convince you here, just describing an opinion - the way I feel about how the club should be run. There's no 'right' way, just different ones.
