Cristiano Ronaldo

Yup same with Beckham, I think after a season at Madrid they had actually made a profit on him.

This is probably the biggest pile of crap myths going around in football currently. They did NOT recoup that amount through shirt sales. Nor did they did so in Ronaldo's case. It defies all laws of common sense and economics.

No point signing Ronaldo, he wouldnt get in the team ahead of Valencia.

Do they have a similar deal to the one we have with Nike, where Nike pays them a lump sum and then takes all profit from shirt sales?

Based on today's showing, he's got no chance. Tony V's the greatest winger at this club, period.

No that's an awful deal, essentially it will've cost Real £15-20m for Ronaldo's services at the peak of his career. We'd be left with a player close to his thirties with no resale value. I just can't see United being so irrational in the transfer market, now if we could get him on a free next season then yes...otherwise he's probably off to Paris. Most fans on let their hearts rule, but looking at it logical that money ought to be spent frugally. He's yesterday's news, both sides have moved on...

Spoony speaks truth

If Real are refusing to pay the wages he wants in a new contract, what makes you think he will be happy to go on the same as he's on now or less with us? He gets the endorsement money regardless so if wages are a sticking point at Real, they will be even more so with us, not to mention the differences in taxes over there to here.

Isn't it that the taxes are going to be higher there?

Hope to god that we sign him. Would mean no more Valencia starting every game and would make us so much more exciting to watch. feck the midfield if it means we can get him.

A round-up of the Spanish side of the gossip then....

Perez is trying to get him to renew, financially they're sure they can find a deal that will encourage him to renew. Perez is trying to campaign (club elections this summer) off the back of a renewal, right down to telling one of the big supporter's club meetings, that basically, don't worry, it's in the bag - we'll give him the money and a deal will be done.

Ronaldo, for whatever reason, and it's probably more to do with trophies and status than cash, is not pleased to be taken for granted.

My guess is that he (or Mendes) want Madrid to know that they aren't his only prospective employers. So, the suggestion goes, if it's for money PSG or someone will deliver, if it's for love it'll be United - which means that Madrid had better combine money and love into one big trophy winning (non Benitez managed) super deal.

Because yes, by all accounts including his own, he is stubborn. Stubborn enough to risk sitting out a two year contract and cashing in on a free transfer for his last big contract.

"Shirt sales" is almost a metaphor in this context. It's not about shirt sales, though Ronaldo shirts sell very well indeed, it's about sponsors, VIP tickets and things like the payments they get for friendlies.

Madrid have increased revenue at a time when the Spanish economy (and disposable incomes) have been crashing and they've done it at a time when Barcelona have been considered to be the stronger team.

Ronaldo has been part of a business success story. They, Perez included, think he's been a crucial part of it and having lost Neymar to Barcelona (they assume) they don't see a replacement, on or off the field.

So, no - it's not about shirts, but commercial revenue is a huge part of the Madrid equation and Perez's conviction, not unreasonably, is that Ronaldo was cheap and it would make business sense to renew.

He might be stubborn but he's way too ambitious to do that last bit.

Weird to think this guy would start deteriorating in 1-2 years. He's a freak of nature, I'd say he has at least 4-5 top years left in him and a few good ones after that depending on how well he adapts.

So our United PO Twitter account follows absolutely no United player but guess who they follow now? A certain Cristiano Ronaldo

feck this shit. Honestly, I couldn't care if Ronaldo is coming back. Sir Alex Ferguson has retired.

Forgetting the Football side of things for a minute and thinking about a potential crash in share prices....

What would Mourinho and Ronaldo cost to bring here? £150m+ including wages?

How much would a share crash knock off the clubs value? £200m? £300m? £400m? More?

What direction would the clubs shares go in if we announced Mourinho and Ronaldo arriving in the summer?

Seriously, who gives a shit apart from Cal?

There are three in the last 10 minutes or so...

I came in here because I thought he might have given a tribute or something to SAF. Transfer speculation and "only god knows" bullshit on Ronaldo's future isn't important in the slightest on a day like today.
