Cristiano Ronaldo

i'd like to see ronaldo come home. Even though i have never met the man, i have little doubt he'd love to come home.

We can do some serious damage in the prem, possibly going undefeated, with the addition of ronaldo. but the prem is child's play for us. The real prize is the cl and with ronaldo we're suddenly a serious contender for that greatest of all club competitions. We would need a bit of luck on the physio room front to actually go the distance, but at least we'd be in the hunt.

wtf?!

Oh dear.

Didn't really get the service at all over the two legs. Dortmund made Madrid look very average, twice.

Isn't that one of his limitations, though? He needs the service because he's not rounded enough as a player to take the game by the scruff of the neck and create something for the team? Even then he had the most shots yesterday and 2nd most (after 4-goal Lewandowski) in the last game. He just missed some chances he wouldn't usually miss. Was the same against us.

He played 6 games v us and Dortmund this year and scored 4 goals. It's a good record but I don't think he played well in any game though. It took him 41 shots to get those 4 goals, while Dortmund as a team had 46 shots in 4 games v Dortmund and scored twice as many goals. I don't think it's a good thing for Ronaldo to average 8 shots a game against top teams while Dortmund are averaging 11 shots a game. There has to be a point where this wastefulness counts against him.

It's the same with both Messi and him these days. They don't contribute in the all round play of the team as much as they used too but still they do enough in spurts to inject pace and skill. That's just the way they are used these days as mainly goalscorers.

Even Yesterday if you see Ronaldo put in 2 dangerous crosses. 1 which Higauin messed up and 1 where there was no one on the end off. Then he also created the Benzema goal with his burst of pace and cross. Plus he along with Ramos was the big threat in the sequence of corners that lead to their 2nd goal in the air.

Most of his shots come from where other players won't shoot though. And many come from positions where he creates space for himself with quick feet along with pace and strength or with excellent movement off the ball movement. So, i don't think it's as bad as it looks, when you compare to other lesser players if i can call them that.

Despite these limitations, he's the top scorer in the CL with 12 goals... All great players usually need service to score, Messi included.

No it's not

It's considerably more like that with Messi now than it used to be, no doubt. There's still a part of me deep down that thinks it's a shame that he is no longer that completely ridiculous footballer from 2010. Freakish footballer no doubt but I could hardly believe what I was seeing back then. It was like something out of a cartoon.

Failure to take games by the scruff of the neck is a criticism that be directed towards both Ronaldo and Messi, particularly this season. The way Messi was moping around the Allianz arena was especially indicative of this.

Messi wasn't fit vs. Bayern.

Don't know if that's true if he was physically fit or not, but he definitely wasn't match fit; that was his first game in 3 weeks and I read an interview by one of Barça's staff who said that Messi was apprehensive of the injury reoccuring. Also the fact that he only came on as a sub against Athletic Bilbao when they were losing in the 2nd half shows how careful they're trying to be with him.

Real's inability to go through is the fault of their inept defense.

Why is this thread turning into a Ronaldo vs Messi debate?

And by the way, Messi definitely means more for the team than Ronaldo.. Ronaldo needs service from his teammates more than Messi does, and Messi creates for his teammates more than Ronaldo does.

Answered your own question didn't you?

What a strange post.

Why are you comparing them?

Ill compare them!

It's only the modern day Ronaldo that needs more service. Ever since his permanent move up front really.

The 06/07, 07/08 Ronaldo however.....

Which strikers in the game don't require adequate service out of interest?

All forwards do. But we've all seen Messi and Ronaldo score out of nothing.

It was claimed that it's one of Ronaldos limitations though, that he requires plenty of service. I find that true of all strikers, with the exceptions of a select few such as Messi or Luiz Ronaldo.

I find it strange some categorize him as a striker who waits for passes. His strengths include running with or without the ball into space. Probably one of the most intelligent players with regards to picking and timing his runs.

It's just that when you instruct your fullback to neglect all attacking duties and stay at the back, his options are more limited. But that would be the case for any player, as you've said. With Messi it's a bit more difficult to restrict him, but I've seen him limited against the likes of Inter and Chelsea...

I don't believe that they are ready to pay £25m for Hernandez to be fair.

Odd thing to say about a guy who plays left or right wing.

Mundo Deportivo claims that Ronaldo has fallen out with Perez. Their theory goes that CR wants more money because Perez is using the re-signing of Ronaldo as a booster to Perez's re-election campaign.

Ronaldo will be 29 next season? fecking hell I'm getting old.

Also I don't see how we're going to sign him back for less than we got for him at the time - he's scored over a goal a game for them over four seasons for fecks sake.

Yes but one pays more for a 24 year old when you know you can still sell him for quite a lot when he is 29,which is why he should be worth less now.

Exactly. £80m was a good price for a player who had at least 7-8 years left at a very good level and would still have a good resale value in 3-5 years. Paying the same sort of money for an almost 29-year old wouldn't be a good investment at all.

How much money is too much for Ronaldo? He's obviously gonna strengthen our team immensely for years to come, but the fact is that he's 28 years old now. Is he worth twice as much as Bale for instance? If we could sign Bale + Gündogan for the same price as Ronaldo, without having to offer any players in return, wouldn't that technically be a much better deal?

I love Ronaldo and my inner Red screams for his return. But is he worth it at all cost? The rational part of me says "no".

Yes, same here! I'd love for Ronaldo to come back, but a Gündogan + Bale transfer (which ain't happening!) would be far better for us.
