Cristiano Ronaldo | Transfer Speculation

We should get our other targets in before even really thinking about this one.

The chances of it coming off are so slim, and the overall quality of the team needs addressing before trying for a crown jewel.

Now, of course, shirts aren't the only merchandise we sell. Or total revenue for merchandising, apparel, retail and licensing was £97m in 15-16,which includes £75m in sponsorship money from adidas (if I'm not mistaken). That leaves £22m from the rest of our operation (which includes or share of 10% on any shirt sold). In order to recoup a fee of 80m "within a year or two", Ronaldo would have to triple that income on his own, and that is if we assume he'll cost as little as £80m (which is highly unlikely). Even over a five year contract, he alone would have to add more than £15m per season to that, which is completely unrealistic. And that's not including his wages, which will amount to at least £40m per season, gross (his current wages (including bonuses) at Madrid are around €500k per week, net). So please, give the whole "he'll pay for himself in merchandise" narrative a rest.

If we end up buying him, I'll accept that. I'd rather we focus on building for the future, but that's just my opinion. I do wish, however, that people would stop spouting nonsense like the above, or saying we'll become instant favorites for the league and the CL or acting as if it's highly unlikely that he'll start to decline withing a couple of seasons.

Trying to argue against signing him becomes tedious and tiresome when every argument you put forth is countered with unrealistic nonsense, or you're simply dismissed as crazy, attention seeking or told you are worse than the people voting for Trump.

Surely this can't be accurate? Deloitte's recent report has our commercial arm bringing in £272.1m excluding all matchday (£102.8m) and broadcast revenue (£140.4m)

On the assumption I'm not massively misunderstanding the report, I will go with Deloitte on this one.

Nope , that truck has a smaller turning circle

Think he just wants Madrid to stick up for him more on these tax issues. In terms of footballing reasons, there isn't a single reason he'd want to join us. Coming to a much worse team, he'd most likely fall behind Messi, he wouldn't win as much and he'd have to deal with getting absolute feck all for service.

A lot of interesting points been made here and the rumoured price is of course pretty crazy given his age. It's hard to speculate how many more years he's got at the top level, there aren't many examples that are appropriate, he's a bit of a different beast altogether. What I would like about him coming back other than he'd immediately improve us is the narrative of two of our players in recent years deciding to come back, one being an incredibly promising prospect turned top player and the other being one of the best players in the world. It would show the pull the club has and how much top quality players want to play for us.

But as is, this is all speculation.

I don't know why, I don't even know if there's been any tangible links as I've hardly been on here the last few days, but I do get the feeling this move is something we're looking it.

I don't believe/never did believe we would get the likes of Fabinho, Mendy, Rodriguez etc, but there's something in the air (probably the girlfriends cooking) that this maybe a distinct possibility.

Whether it's the club looking to make a massive statement or what, I can see Woodward consulting Mourinho about the player. Something along the lines of him not being on the list of players Mourinho provided, but if the opportunity to work with Ronaldo presented itself, what would he think of the idea.

I'm 100% sure if Woodward floated the idea to Mourinho and he shot it down in flames that would be it - but it would be an incredible coup for the club.

I'm interested to know who reckons Ronaldo would have a genuine chance at breaking Rooney's scoring record if he joined on a 5 year contract say ?

He only needs something like 135 goals.

That would be utterly, seriously, hilarious.

That would be incredible:lol:

At the age of 35, Zlatan scored 28 total goals for us. Ronaldo would score 25-30 goals a season minimum for next 3-4 years. That would mean by the age of 35/36 he would have scored about 100 more goals for us. 35 more goals in his next couple of years seems unlikely so I would think that he would certainly run it close but may not break the record.

Anybody would think we only have one fax machine

Not a very good one if our previous dealing with Real Madrid is anything to go by.

In all seriousness I imagine that negotiations are quite complex and where one deal progresses the others are temporarily delayed and that can allow others to step in.

Sure multiple deals would be advanced enough to manage. Also have we not signed 2 players at once before?

Besides when we sign players in a few days apart with understock the paperwork on the day of signing them they will have already prepared

I don't think Mourinho would enjoy working with Ronaldo again after their time together in Madrid. Even after all the comments Mourinho made about working with the real Ronaldo. But in the end would Ronaldo prefer to put up with Mourinho and having adoring fans or stay put and have hankies waved at him week in week out and being booed and whistled at.

The £173 million plus De Gea dea is an easy win for Madrid, that would be a horrible deal on your part.
HOLY MOLEY, something i thought i'd never see. An hosest scouser!

Sorry couldn't resist the temptation to get a dig in. Yea i agree with ya!

Would love to see him back here, but not at the expense of De Gea. If united are in for ronaldo then splash the cash. Don't lose someone who if not already will be the best keeper in the world.

@giorno @carvajal

How are the Madrid fans taking these stories?? Are they worried he's leaving? Are they saying feck him? If he stays, will he get stick next season? Would they rather replace him with Mbappe??

Honestly if I was a Madrid fan, I would be thinking win-win. If he stays great! If he leaves not only will they get 100m+ but a placement like the next day in Mbappe, one for the future. A treble wont be a possibility without Ronaldo but the league might still be up for grabs.

People do not understand his complaints, although surely they also do not understand the judicial process against him.
In the sense of assessing whether the Treasury and the Prosecutor's Office are being unfair or not to him.
For the majority is "You can leave if you want, but pay first".
There are opinions for all tastes, but I think that his exit would leave a feeling of emptiness.
If he stays he deserves whistles from all Bernabéu in his first match.

Yes, in total our commercial revenue is £268,3m (according to last years annual report), of which merchandising, apparel, retail and licensing make up £97,3m. I realize that I am, at least in part, somewhat mistaken. I'm not sure which how much of the money we're getting from adidas is for licensing, and how much of it is sponsorship, so we're probably making more than 22m outside of that deal. However, even if the full £97,3m, Ronaldo alone increasing that post by £15m per year is highly unlikely. And that's when operating with a transfer fee at the low end of the spectrum, and not including his wages (easily £40m gross per year, based on his current wage at Madrid).

As I said, the club will never be able to recoup the costs of bringing him here through merchandising (this goes for basically any player), so let's stop claiming that he'll pay for himself.

Florentino confess to our partners of ABC that he is sure that calling Cristiano, he will fix everything

All this is very strange, Cristiano is a good guy,I have to speak to him and see what happens

Neil Custis reporting that Ronaldo "will not hold Man Utd to ransom over his wage demands to make sure the transfer can go through" in tomorrow's edition of The Sun.

Say what you want about him but he does have good contacts at United. Although I'm not sure how he found out Ronaldo's stance on all this.

I think that we all have to fulfill our fiscal obligations and I know that Cristiano always wants to fulfill"

That is harsh.
He''s your 2nd greatest player of all time.

"Florentino comes out in defense of Cristiano". "It is not permissible to treat Cristiano as a delinquent"

Think we'll get a better idea of everything after the Confederations cup.

Still believe that he's 99% staying.

Every news site just guessing.

Tomorrow's Marca - Perez: Cristiano will continue at Real, I have to talk to him.

I am sure that Cristiano fulfills his fiscal duties, it must be a confusion that will be clarified

"Surely Cristiano would not want us to pay his fine, if there was one; he is not like that" ()

Here's what Perez has had to say to Onda Cero about Ronaldo...

"We have not spoken because we were on the deadline for [presidential] nominations and I wanted to be respectful, but I am convinced we will talk and we will solve it.

"I have always said I have great affection for Cristiano. He is one of those players who stands out, and whenever there has been a problem we have solved it.

"Cristiano is playing the Confederations Cup. We will wait until the tournament ends and then we will see the extent of everything that has been written. I am sure it will work out fine."

It was never happening in the first place, Ronaldo just wants to make sure he has the club firmly pushing everything in his favour with the tax issue and to help him clear a chunk of it.

So at the very least Perez is confirming these stories, or he would surely have just said there is nothing to them.

Well, if Cristiano asked for support, I think the president has been quite eloquent. He has organized an interview with his friend on the radio and another with his friends in the written press.
