True.
Rooney is much more an United-legend than Ronaldo is, and yet one doesnt always get that impression.
You can make a case for all of that starting 11 & a few squaddies being United legends in that 07-09 period. Id say Tevez and Hargreaves are the only ones that aren’t. One was a dick after leaving, and the other was ruined by injuries.

VdS, Evra, Vidic, Rio, GNev/Brown, Scholes, Carrick, Fletcher, Rooney, Giggs, Ronaldo.

I said Rooney was a bigger legend, not that Ronaldo wasn't one.
Not every legend is equal.

17 years ago on this day he was subbed on for Figo at Euro 2004 with 15 minutes to play, assisted Rui Costa's goal and won the starting spot in the team until today.

It’s a tricky one isn’t it. Rooney tried to go to City in his prime then later tried to go to Chelsea. That hurt his legacy hugely. Ronaldo’s 07-08 was better than anything Rooney ever did, so it depends if you value longevity over quality.

Its simple actually.

Regardless of ability (let's face it, there is only one player above CR7 in last 20 years), Rooney was far more committed to United than Ronaldo who stated repeatedly of his "dream" to play for Real Madrid and how his mother dreams of seeing him in white shirt. Went so far as to publicly agree with Blatter that he was held as a "slave". Threw all kinds of tantrums in his last couple of years with "god only knows" bollocks. Not that I hold it against him, players are free to do what they please, they are employees even if fans don't always see it that way.

If that's somehow comparable to what Rooney did then we should just agree to disagree. Rooney stuck with United and only questioned (rightly so) the ambition of the club and then threatened to leave and was still there pretty much to the end. He was still the one busting his ass in some of our darkest years post fergie. We replaced Ronaldo and Tevez with Valencia, Obertan, Michael Owen and Bebe ffs. How can you not question the ambition of the club?

I'd rather say that Ronaldo was an iconic player for us rather than a legend. A bit tit for tat though.

Betrayal is harsh but United was definitely a "stepping stone" in the journey. The way he went about it also left a salty taste with "slavery" and "god only knows" comments and the way he conducted himself. I remember a game in which he basically self subbed himself.

Overall can't fault someone for playing for Real Madrid. They are the undisputed biggest club regardless of what we say around here. I just wish we'd gotten more of his "prime" years than Real did.
Was he a bit of a drama queen about leaving to Madrid, hell yeah. But he didn't betray Man United for a single fecking second. He would've betrayed us if he went to fecking Liverpool.
I do agree with you, he did throw a bit of a tantrum about leaving which he should regret, but nothing out of the ordinary.

For the other chaps here still being butt hurt about him leaving to Madrid, would it be okay for your employer to block you from choosing another job?

Took Ronaldo 17 years to surpass what Platini scored in a single summer ;)

My late father always claimed that was the ultimate individual performance in an international tournament he witnessed, easily above Maradona '86. Scoring nine goals in five games while not being an out and out attacker does sound crazy to be honest.

Yeah, and that was also at a time when it was only the truly top teams got to qualify unlike now, where virtually half the teams that start put in qualifying do.

Seriously? How is this even debate? One is our all time top goalscorer who spent nearly whole career here ( yes, he wanted to leave BUT he didn't). Other one spent 5 years here on which 3 were truly great and then he sulked and cried how he wants to leave. Oh yes, he was a slave in United. Remember that?

Bloody hell, Cr7 is one of the best players in history but from United view, he is just one great player who helped us to win trophies. I would not give him even legend status.

Rooney's legacy is hugely underrated among United fans and i simply can't understand why.

Imagine saying that a player betrayed a club by moving on to another challenge after 6 years and winning everything for the club and every individual award he could win. It's mind-boggling how can someone make that claim after what he gave to Man Utd as a player.

Cantona for example only played 5 seasons for us and is considered a legend by most so pretty sure longevity it's not a real issue when talking about if a player is or isn't a legend for the club.

With that said, I do agree that Rooney is a bigger legend for the club than Ronaldo. Yeah, Ronaldo's peak in the club vs Rooney was higher but Rooney stayed and was still a core key player when Ronaldo was here and after him.

Wow, this is all very weird. The fanboy in me can’t help but feel tickled by all this. Would I want the club to break the wage structure to bring him here? No. But to have him back would be a massive feel good factor for the club. He would inspire a lot of the younger players here.

I don’t really think this is happening, which is why this social media love in is weird. But one can dream

It's clicks - Portugal playing today and just an excuse to keep engagement up

That really was brilliant from him, from the defensive header to busting a gut to the other end. He's 36 too, amazing.

What a player. Phenomenal numbers still being posted at that age. Another against top class international opposition too.

that tap in makes him the goat!

This guy just ran, in a straight line, then scored a tap in!

Truly the GOAT.
Really don't understand why people feel the need to come to the Ronaldo thread to post nonsense like this. It's just unnecessarily provocative and leads to the same dull, circular conversations. If you're not a fan of Ronaldo why post in the thread? And if you want to make it a Ronaldo Vs Messi conversation, take it to that dedicated thread. Just all a bit childish.

Just ignore the haters, then they’ll get bored.

Just watching the GOAT lead his side to an impressive thumping
Just to be clear, I have no stake in whether or not you think Ronaldo is a GOAT. He's one of many, many excellent footballers over the years but I don't particularly like him above any others. What does irritate me is wums like you derailing threads with your provocative nonsense. Grow up and get your kicks in a more healthy, less tragic fashion, k?

Bar Cavani what other player do we have that can run a straight line and score a tap in. We even have a number 9 who can't even run

Yep, still rustled.

Not all tap ins are created equal. Ronaldo put in quite an effort to be in a position for that tap in, reminiscent of several he scored for United.

I’d definitely have him back. That is, of the Glazers are willing to commit the resources to putting a squad together this summer to give us a real shot at PL and CL trophies next season. If not, there’s no point in Ronaldo coming home.
