ETH has certainly played his cards really well. It is well recognized how for a new coach, big name players at the club that doesn't fit the new coach's philosophy.
If you in the summer set out a scenario were ETH is going to come in and dethronize Harry Maguire and Christiano Ronaldo completely, people would have said that it probably was doable but that it was going to cost a lot. Leave him with a lot of enemies. Be disliked by many fans. Like don't get me wrong, I am certain that ETH doesn't have a personal agenda against any of these guys, if Maguire would have come into the season and played like say a Michael Reiziger at CB, ETH would have been thrilled. But for football reasons, these guys aren't the best fit.
In hindsight, I have to say that ETH played his cards -- not only well -- but also without being detected 'as a card player'. Was ETH really of the opinion that the best starting 11 for Brentford included Maguire with Varane on the bench? I think that there was a element with letting the Captain start and play his way out of it, there. The writing of ETH-disrespecting-Ronaldo-claims was on the wall, but what are we discussing on this topic now? People are saying that they are disappointed with ETH not seeing through Ronaldo when he made Ronaldo captain against Villa. No talk about ETH disrespecting Ronaldo (at least besides what is coming from Piers directly).
