I don’t agree with any of the ‘out of respect’ interpretations you give. If you really think Ronaldo has sacrificed himself in any major way to play for Man United, I think you are reading him very badly.
I don’t disagree on your point about empathy. Having an overly narcissistic personality can be very lonesome and scary experience, even in times of outward success. However, one caveat with empathy towards hypernarcissists - when they feck you over, your anger and even a little contempt is as important as your empathy, so as not to get sucked into their dysfunctional pattern. There are whole countries in disarray as a result of people getting vested in narcissistic personalities. The splits between those who take the narcissistic narratives at face value and those who experience it as self serving manipulating lies, can become ugly.
Even if one chuckles a bit at a 37 year old multi millionaire behaving like a 5 year old spoilt kid (a touch of contempt there on my part), there is also the need to stand up to the narcissistic agenda and set limits. The more power they have, the more ugly that can get. My overall thoughts about this is that I don't care much about him being a liar, self centered or that he has an issue with former players. The part that to me is unacceptable is what he said about Rangnick, his refusal to accept fairly normal tactical philosophies and also the way he clearly look down on the current manager. Even if you think that way, you never say it publically, you never act on it.

I agree that he shouldn't have done it, he's obviously been deeply hurt by the alleged mistrust and disrespect. I am a long way from a fan of Pogba but this is completely correct. Ronaldos behaviour and this interview is way off the chart of anything seen before. Even going back to Keanes interview after the Middlesborough game slagging everyone off that was done in the heat of the moment after watching a shockingly bad performance. This was staged and planned deliberately to engineer a move in January just like he tried to engineer a move in August.

Certain players seem to think that contracts should only be enforced when it suits them like for example they are injured or passing from a bad time. When things go wrong (ex when they become bench players or when another club is ready to shower them with money) then suddenly the club is disrespecting them or they are treating them as slaves.
But that's not all. If you notice Ronaldo had never said that he wants to leave. That despite everything in that interview points exactly to that. The reason being that he doesn't want to strengthen the club's legal team hand to simply terminate his job without paying him the remainder of his contract. Ronaldo wants his pound of flesh.
I can't help thinking that everything was planned way in advance. 3 months ago he came out threatening the club that unless they treat him the way he wants then he'll go to the media. Then he waited when Portugal had already named their squad for the WC and when the last EPL game had been played. That means that neither ETH nor Portugal can reply/react to it.
