Cristiano Ronaldo (I stay)

Not from his perspective. To him he's still the best player on earth that's why he keeps demanding things. Guy is a narcissist mind you. Such people are very very delusional about themselves. He's desperate to leave because he thinks us and the Europa League is well beneath his mighty self.
Well, yes, but surely at some point he'd realize that he'll be stuck here unless he lowers his demands.

Ronald is an icon, any club that gets him will sell shirts. For that reason, he probably sees no reason to take a pay cut.
How about the reason that he'll be stuck at a club he's apparently desperate to leave?

Just had a thought. Can't clubs design and produce their own shirts keeping all the money?
They have to third party supplier and then they have to source all the goods and distribute it around world. Then they have to find channels to sell the merchandise. With a shirt sponsor you don't need all these, they will take care all of it. There's more to it but I'm just giving you a small example. Also, brands like Nike and Adidas will increase clubs visibility.

I don't know what people expect Mendes to do. His client is about to turn 38 - he can't perform miracles. His options are very limited.
Unless the whole saga was initiated by Mendes to generate a last big payday (commission; signing-on fee) for himself.

I’m not insisting that’s what happened, but I think it would be foolish to discount it altogether.

If he really wanted to leave. Why didn’t he just go awol? If Antony could do so could Ronaldo. If he wants to stay he got like a trillion ways of communicate that instead. It’s all so stupid. He ruins it for everyone including himself. Muppet.

In order to … what? There are no buyers. We can’t sell him if there is no bid, we can’t loan him out if there is no bid.

He can buy out his contract and become a free agent

The problem isnt United keeping him against his will

The issue is no one wants to take him.

I am assuming this but all news points to this situation.

Ronaldo could help himself perhaps by accepting 50k a week from clubs, we could receive 10m for example and clear him from wage bill and he could get CL football

its not like he needs the money

He’s worth like 800 million. If I was Ten Hag I’d get United to offer him 12.5 million just to get rid of him and let him jet off the to the MLS because no top four club in Europe would take him.

Maybe because he won't be a starter here and won't buy into the required intensity and tactical discipline ETH demands? If he stays I do hope we see him show a willingness to play for the team.

Right, but what I meant was, if he terminates his contract then he won't have a club. The point I was making was, that if he doesn't go before the window closes, then it's quite clear that the clubs that he would want to go to don't want him. Therefore, he may as well stay and just get on with it because terminating his contract would just mean he'll have no football until the World Cup.

United may feel different, of course, and think that terminating his contract would be best to get him out so he's no longer a distraction. Personally, this is the course of action I would want.

If he doesn’t want to stay at the club at all. Just leave. Sure the contract will not be fulfilled and I guess it will be legal consequences, but if he really doesn’t want to be here, why bother being available? He didn’t even try to play something even resembling football.

Because that would add further to the "he's toxic" sentiment that he is trying to avoid.

Memphis is all about buildup play. He holds the ball pretty well

Memphis is shit. Not good at particularly anything and not fast or skilled enough to play as an attacker in the premier league. Far more suited to be a backup in Italy or Spain. When has bringing back a terrible player worked out for any club?

Memphis is not the answer either. We need a big bustling CF who will knock down the ball to our wingers cutting in as well as scoring goals. Ronaldo just wants to do it all himself, and Memphis is the same.
Memphis isn’t the long term answer but that’s not true at all - he’s very good at linking everything up and is a very different player than when he was here. He’s not a top top level striker but he’d offer more than 37 year old Ronaldo.

He is if the question is what 28 year old former Manchester United player could we conceivably sign as a forward option for very little money to tide us over for a season or 2 until a younger player presents them self as a long term forward option?

Might need a bit of work but:p

Memphis is shit.
Our alternative is Rashford as a CF, and Marcus is even worse in this position. Last alternative would be Amad as a CF - we don’t have anyone else to play CF when Martial is injured.

I know Cristiano has been a pain in the arse this season, but people wanting to get rid without replacing are not considering we are alarmingly short in the striker department. Martial is injury prone as hell, so that would leave us with Rashford playing in that position. Is that really a better option than keeping Cristiano?

I'm sure Cristiano is doing all this circus because he wants to leave for UCL football, but as soon as the window closes theres no doubt in my mind that he'll turn up and be professional like he's always been. This won't be a case of Cristiano lowering his guns, he's to proud to do it.

Good post

So we go for a guy that we will struggle to get rid of in a few years?

Like he was professional at Brentford away last season? Like he’s professional every time he saunters back 20 yards behind the defence ruining any chance at counter attacking?

Getting rid of toxic personalities is usually more helpful than keeping them around just to make up the numbers, just look at Arsenal/Aubamayang last season.

Looking like he'll stay I guess. If he knuckles down and gets on with things and maybe helps us win the Europa League I'm fine with him staying.

Part of me is looking forward to the fan reaction if/when he reaches 150 goals for the club

A shocking comedown of ego and expectations really for Ronaldo and Mendes of trying actively for 2 straight months to find any kind of CL club and failing to find a single suitor.
It's baffling that they went (basically) public with his intention to leave. Can only assume they thought Chelsea would come through. It seemed obvious (to me at least) even back then that no one else would be interested.

You know perfectly well that a tap in against Crewe in the League Cup would have the fans SIUUing all over the gaff. If he hits 150 goals for us then the debates about him being our best ever player, on for Rooney’s record etc. will resurface.

I doubt half of them are. I think he wanted to go to Chelsea and they had some deal but Tuchel probably backed out. After that I think Sporting and Napoli are possibilities. Athletico was never on, that story felt ridiculous from every angle.
Atletico was on. Castles mentioned it in his article ghost written by Mendes and Ronaldo. But I don't think he would have moved in the end. Too legacy tarnishing.

I think the likes of Marseille and Dortmund were false. Sporting too.

Milan, Inter, Chelsea, PSG, Bayern, Madrid and Atletico were possibilities. Barca? Definitely not. I think Napoli was a stretch too.

Even he really wanted to move to some of these clubs, he would have lowered wage demands.

I'm still curious to see this interview he's been hinting at where he'll 'reveal all'.

“I’ve always been loyal to this club and that’s why I’m staying. It was never in any doubt in my mind”
Can see it now: sombre mood lighting, interviewer is just a voice off-camera, and Cristiano forcing a smile at the banal questions like he's in a hostage video.
