What I imagined happened is that Ronaldo overinterpreted the willingness of people like Laporta and Boehly to have a chat about a transfer as concrete interest.
You can see why. With the way he views himself, it won't have even crossed his mind that if he made himself available people might have second thoughts. However, as I've said earlier in this thread, I think this summer is going to be an ugly wake up call for Ronaldo.
Sooner or later, Ronaldo will have to accept he is years beyond his best. He's not a 27 year old scoring 50-60 goals a season, he's a 37 year old barely scoring half that. He's no longer head and shoulders above the rest. Now he's just one of very many good players and, sadly for him, on the pitch, those other players offer more than he does. For example, for Nagelsmann's system Mane offers a lot more off the ball work. Plus, Mane will get Bayern 30 goals a season. So why would Bayern smash their wage structure and their team's tactical set up for Ronaldo?
If there is a silver lining to all this it may be that Ronaldo wakes up to his position in the game today, not what it was half a dozen years ago. He might even come back desperate to prove people wrong.
