He could play as some sort of CF but the problem isn't that he doesn't press but how little the team offers him if he just waits to receive a pass. With another striker he can roam and participate in build up while also scoring.

The only issue I see with the Cavani-Ronaldo partenrship is their age and them being fit for the whole season. Ideally one of the other forwards would need to play in a similar fashion like Cavani but as things stand both Cavani and Ronaldo should start and try to capitalize on it this season.

Good job it wasn't straight at Lloris as it would've ripped his head off. Loved that one.

Either way, what a performance.
Since his return, I don't think we've seen him hit the ball like that, with that power. I loved it.
It always seemed like he was off balance in other games

Two magic moments that won us the game. His goal was top class. Such a hard technique that was made to look so easy. His assist wasnt too bad neither. All in all, the difference maker.

I don't want to see anyone calling him a problem again. The disrespect towards Ronaldo has been unreal, especially from Gary.

No matter how shit our team will be this season, he'll score more, that's his task and he's best in the world for it.

It is genuinely amazing to me that there’s a not unsizable movement trying to pin all our issues on him…I understand the logic of it fine, but it just doesn’t remotely scan.

For one it relies on us rather brazenly pretending we were some kind of well oiled fluid machine last season, who didn’t also ship a shit load of chances and get an unusually high number of penalties…which I guess means all our regular and much celebrated comebacks were just deliberate attempts to make the games more exciting, or something?

I know Messi comparisons are tedious as feck and basically the Godwin’s Law of football chat, but Lionel hasn’t scored or assisted a single goal in Ligue 1 and I haven’t seen a fraction of the think peices dedicated to pondering whether hes become a major problem for PSG.. whereas near every single positive memorable moment as a Manchester United fan this season beyond matchday 2 has been directly due to Cristiano Ronaldo… and yet apparently he’s completely fecked us because an unreliable stat metric says he doesn’t press enough? - (itself a team tactic we’ve only used once, completely out of the blue, to disastrous effect!)

I’m not saying he doesn’t present us with some issues, but come on, behave lads… This isn’t Ruud in 2005 - who by that point wasn’t exactly winning us games on his own, and even if he had been, it wasn’t rendering us a complete shambles all over the park.

If we can sort our shit out, he’ll get 30 goals lying on his back.

Really hope we don't waste his return. I want to win the big trophies in general, but I'd especially love to see him (& de Gea who's deserved more) lift the big'uns again.

Good post!

We’re lucky to have him, and he seems to be getting into his stride now. Cavani is perfect foil for him too.

Rashford can play the Cavani role. His is faster, stronger and would be willing to open up more space. I reckon he'll have better chemistry too.

Him and Greenwood have non-existent understanding, so that's not happening but him and Rashford can strike up a good partnership.

The finish was world class and his second one would have been as well if not for being half a yard offside, and the assist was astute, good all round performance.

He took that goal so well. Not once he took his eye off the ball, such a clean finish.

I was also impressed by that. The shot itself was a beauty but he was able to do it as he was tracking the ball regardeless of the defender, so he was ready in case the defender would missed the ball and never kept his eyes off the ball.

It sounds simple but a lot of players don't track the ball and looked surprised if the ball isn't cleared it and passes in front of them.

Ronaldo is almost 37 and he has a lot mileage in his body, so we have to smart when it comes to utilizing him.

Have heard this a lot from critics and fans alike. I think we all need to acknowledge that he's not your usual 36/37. He's probably one of the fittest athlete ever in the history of sports and his body age would be at least 4-5 years younger than it is.

He's the least of our worries performance wise. Even last week he almost got in the scoresheet.

When the rest of the team struggles behind him, he's obviously not going to make much of a mark.

Agree with all that. The last two seasons have seen some big issues still remain with the team and the system and we've been helped by a quite a few things going in our favour, especially with a low points tally for champions league football and Liverpool being without a defence for half the season. The idea that Ronnie ruined a well drilled machine is ludicrous.

He'll get 30+ goals easily this season (barring injury) and a competent, well drilled side will create him those chances that he'll invariably take.

He seems to enjoy having a striker next to him, who would have thought? Still has class in his legs.

He is not a pure CF. He is a LF who plays best when playing off a traditional hardworking CF like Benzema. That is exactly what Cavani is.

Cavani and Ronaldo will be a great partnership. Just need to keep rotating them with Greenwood and Rashford.

Just imagine Shaw and Lamptey putting crosses in for Ronaldo and Cavani with Bruno at the edge of the box. The 3-4-3 is really giving us a good balance to the side.

I'd say just rotate it - Ronaldo Cavani Bruno with:

Rashford- Greenwood- Sancho
343

Or even

Rashford- Greenwood
Sancho
I've always had a thing for seeing Sancho centrally for some reason.

I'd also like us to use a 343 at times, too, which, as you said, would allow us to rotate. However, we played more of a flat midfield three today, as opposed to a pivot with Bruno ahead as a 10. Could Sancho play that role?

He plays best when paired with a hardworking striker, even my nan can see that. His best partners were Rooney, Benzema and Mandzukic.

The problem arises when Ole tries to shoehorn Greenwood, Rashford and Sancho into the mix.

Ronaldo volley was special. I thought he will do well Cavani as a partner and he didn’t disappoint. Greenwood Sancho and others will get their chances. Its a long season

Was a different system today though

My point still stands, a manager must setup the team according to the strengths of the players he has at his disposal, if you have a lethal finisher like Ronaldo, then you need to setup your team in a way that suits Ronaldo.

Definitely. I've missed those blasts from him.

Our forwards suck at defending from the front, hence making it difficult for us to press high and also makes our teams susceptible to counters once we lose the ball/teams play around our press. Hence going to 3 at the back makes us more secure, gives extra protection to our weak CM, the wingbacks give us width. The likes of Cavani and Ronaldo up top is a very ideal partnership, as they complement each other well, and are both very dangerous in the air, so we need wingbacks who can cross. Bringing the likes of Rashford, Greenwood and Sancho from the bench is a huge threat as well.

Exactly.

Pressing from the front with Ronaldo. Playing a high back line with Maguire.

Under Ole we've been a counter attacking team. Why go away from that, especially with Ronaldo at the point of the spear?

What a finish for the opener. The one chalked off for offside made me almost sad that VAR exists. Venomous.

Lovely feet and weight on the pass for Cavani's goal too.

Greenwood needs to learn to play that role, no reason he shouldnt be able to.

I didn't see all the game, but from what I saw he was quality today. Helped being partnered with Cavani. It's one game so we'll see from here, but it was impressive.

Great goal, great assist and awesome disallowed strike. Fecking top player and feck that tw*ts saying he’s a problem.
He is/was a problem. It was always primarily a system failure, but Ronaldo amplified that.

If we pair the strikers, I would go with Greenwood and Cavani or Rashford only, not with Ronaldo.

Yeah, I wouldnt be surprised if we play Rashford and Ronaldo against Atlanta. I hope that partnerships works, because Cavani cannot play 2 games every week.

Hard to describe him isn't it. He's 36 and doing that, two ridiculous finishes. Who cares if we have to make a few sacrifices to accommodate him, when you have head and shoulders the best striker in the league, you build around his strengths and weaknesses.
