Cricket

Considering their history with their pitch being flooded all the time some would say that's apt.

Really? sounds like fun! I don't follow Cricket but just seen that pop up on my timeline and it instantly made me think of the North American sports teams and the way they tend to name them.

Mohammed Amir's 5 year ban ends a year from now.

And he'll be 23 years of age.

feck me.

23 is nothing. Most players don't even make their international debuts by that.

Best young bowler I've seen. 5 years is a long time plus mentally he's been through a lot. Despite his young age I don't know if he'd be able to come back and continue at the same level.

Holding was in tears when it all went down, can't see him making it back to be honest, PCB are a bit dodgy and I'd imagine he's going to end up playing county cricket or something at a high level or he might even just not want anything to do with the game now.

EDIT: Scrap all that bullshit I just spouted, here's the man himself

5 years is a long time though.

May also work out for him, though.

He had back issues as a kid. Stress fractures and all that.

feck! Can't believe it's been 4 years already.

I thought his ban was harsh. 2 years would've been enough for him. The other 2 should've been banned for life. I reckon Amir will be back in the side, unless he's got really fat and lost all that talent. Supremely talented, shame he went down that path of cheating.

All cheaters should've been banned for life IMO.

I don't buy this he was too young to think etc etc.

Depends doesn't it, I think everyone would prefer to feel he was young and taken advantage of by his captain and I absolutely do think he deserves at least one more chance but you can also be cynical and say he knew what he was doing. Tough one to judge unless you know the lad well.

Seemed at the time that he was coerced by older players. 2 years would have done.

Jesus Christ! Thought he was about that age when he got the ban. He's got years and years to restart his career.

Best young bowler I've seen in a few years. Immense potential back then, hopefully can come back and pick up from where he left off.

Fair enough, but I'm glad the ICC isn't as silly in their reasoning as you are.

I'm also glad that ICC isn't as naive as you are or else the cheaters would have gone without punishment.

5 years isn't enough punishment for an 18 year old kid influenced by two seniors, one of them his captain?

Depends from situation to situation, I would say. And it would have been very harsh in Amir's case. The age at which he was offered the opportunity to earn the sort of money he would have rarely even dreamt of, you would think he would not even be allowed to make that decision for himself. Seniors, probably even family members decide a lot of things for someone of that age. Not justifying and there's plenty of youngsters who would simply decline that as well, thankfully but IMO 5 years is a more than enough punishment to set a precedent that prevents others from doing it while also not destroying a career, specially of someone as talented as him, completely. Actually a 5 year complete ban would usually end one's chances of making any sort of a decent comeback, if Amir wasn't as young as he was when he got into this we wouldn't even be talking about his future. I think lifetime bans should happen in cases where it's just obvious that the player did it without any sort of influence and no regards for the sport and everyone involved whatsoever, but I don't want to advocate the same for scenarios such as Amir's.

I could argue they still do to a large extent.
Indeed. There will have been plenty more shitting their whites when the allegations came out, and knocked it on the head. In other cases it'll still be going on, either for financial gain or gambling mafias making direct threats to players and their families, particularly the subcontinent.

Agree with Don. 5 years is enough (more than enough) for an 18 yr old kid, no doubt put under considerable pressure in the process. But I can see where KM is coming from, and sets a dangerous precedent for young players who might think "I'll do it...it's only 5 years max if I get caught". More has to be done about stamping cheating out of the game. It's difficult, as these betting mafias will always exist. It's all done underground and very hard to police. Players heads will always be turned, whether by hook or by crook.

I'm waiting for the first elite panel umpire to be caught up in match fixing. Billy would be funny, or Taufel for that matter. But dear god, not Dickie Bird or Shep. It would have the same impact on the nation like when the up Jimmy Savile stuff came out.

Doubt it, thats a career ender right there. Five years with no cricket is very hard to compensate for. The only reason I think Aamir has a chance is due to his insane talent and even then I dont think he is going to realize his original potential.

By a country mile. I remember that test series in England and he was absolutely immense. Swung the ball both ways at 90mph for an 18 year old. Our lads were clueless

Feck off. Inzamam was the biggest match fixer ever. I mean, look at some of those run outs!!! He was defo on the take.....

Or, he was a bit slow. Physically as well as mentally when it came to running :p

Why are we playing asad shafiq/azhar ali over umar akmal?

How do you think Pak will cope when Younis and Misbah retire? Will it be bit like SL batting after Mahela-Sanga which doesn't look 'very promising'?

Am hoping misbah retires, he is way too slow and values player like that over stroke players. He cant rotate the strike at all.

Younis will be a big loss, we still havent replaced inzamam and yousuf so to lose him as well would leave our batting very weak. Other than umar akmal, I dont see anyone having the class to replace those three.

Just seen this come up on my twitter feed.

What a great way to start a tweet "Toss".

I admit to not following cricket as closely as in my youth but since when did herath transform from a joke into sri lanka's trump card.

Feckin Sanga marching towards another 100. Will he reach close to Sachin on test runs? :nervous:

he had scored 930 runs in ten innings(I think) before scoring 140* just now, incredible average although am hoping the rest of the pitxches are more bowler friendly,

Ya, Sanga has been on incredible run recently. To catch Sachin, he has long way to go though. He is 37 and now that his friend Mahela is retiring he might decide on it after world cup or sometime next year. Still 4000 runs behind Sachin so it will take top cricket of 4 years to reach. Improbable but he looks as fit as ever.. so, who knows.

Sangakkara's scored 10 double centuries in his career  Likes playing against Pakistan too, 6th time he's gone 150+ runs against them.

Obviously seems the pitch is very flat, but slightly concerned by our bowling options. Junaid Khan is decent but there's not many other options. Don't know what's happened to the giant Irfan.

Woah, what the feck is Pakistan doing?

Looks like an exciting match. Pakistan slowly steering towards a draw.

Need to bat out another 10 overs.

21 overs and Lanka need 99 runs.

Good test match.
