Cricket

Steyn is just a beast, superb spell of bowling.

I think it's safe to say this match is fixed :wenger:

We (india) are going to get ripped apart when we tour there later this year..

Cricket as a sport keeps getting shittier everyday. If I am correct, this is the third test match in a row where SA have bowled a team for under 50 in an innings.

Test cricket is going to die a slow death if this continues. Out of 10 test playing nations there is one dominant side, 2 decent sides, 2 bad sides and the rest are completely shit.

Sad state of affairs.

Have you even watched a lot of cricket?

West Indies dominated the 70s and 80s. Australia in the late 90s and 00s.

Test cricket survived. S. Africa are nowhere near as dominant as those two.

The difference is touring sides don't have long enough itineraries anymore. I reckon most play one poxy warm up game before starting the series proper.

That is a huge problem. Itineraries are compromised for money spinning, meaningless T20 games and tournaments (like the IPL). Earlier teams used to go and acclimatize themselves with foreign conditions and pitches. These day they start playing 5 days after landing in the host country. You need to adjust to the conditions to play test cricket both mentally and physically.

There is too much emphasis on limited over formats. Players techniques are going to shit. Every second player is a watch and hit merchant. If you watch carefully, you'll notice minimal footwork from modern day batsman. Stand and deliver is the present mantra and it makes me sick.

Good point. Although not sure any amount of test matches could save you from Steyn.

You reckon he's one of the best ever?

Test cricket is "dying" but more for the reasons Spoony is stating rather than FGiggs. As good as Steyn, he probably has 4 more years as good as he is right now.

We dominating test cricket at the moment. Kirsten has done wonders for our mentality.

You based your whole argument on "test cricket dying" based on one team being dominant. When really its been like that for the last 10-15 years.

It was an observation rather than an argument. The point was that there are very few quality teams than about a dominant number 1.

Test cricket is "dying" but more for the reasons Spoony is stating rather than FGiggs. As good as Steyn, he probably has 4 more years as good as he is right now.

Spoony gave the correct reason for the bad performance of touring teams. I said the emphasis on limited over formats and meaningless tournaments were the reason teams the itineraries were packed.

I merely just augmented Spoony's point.

There is a dearth of quality of batsmen and bowlers in cricket now. Besides Steyn, who is exceptional, bowlers are breaking down with alarming regularity. There is a new Austrlian debut in every third match, Finn has his injury issues, Indian quicks come in and fade away, Pakistan doesn't have one great bowler, etc. etc. Batsmen all over are getting terribly exposed by ordinary seam or spin bowling.

There was a time when we had Ambrose, Walsh, Bishop, Donald, Wasim, Waqar, McGrath, Gillespse etc. operating for different teams around the same time. Now?

In the spin department we has Warne, Kumble, Muttiah, Saqlain, Mustaq etc. Now we have Swann and a blatant chucker Ajmal holding the fort.

It is the same for the batting. There are very few batsmen with good techniques going around.

David freaking Warner opens for Australia. David Freaking Warner. A few years back they wouldn't even allow him to sniff the test team, now he is a part of it.

Test cricket has been far more interesting in the last 5 or 7 years than it ever has been imo. There are far more results and the games are a lot closer. And a lot of that is down to the influence of Limited overs cricket and as someone who watches the game to enjoy it rather than continually moan about it test cricket is very much alive.

Touring sides have always struggled, this is not a new phenomena. We (India) went a long time without ever winning a series outside of the subcontinent. Srilanka have always been shite away from home.

As for David Warner, Michael Slater who had a poor-ish technique played more than 70 games for Australia.

AB with another hundred and that brings about the declaration. Seems a bit too early to declare for me.

Watching teams getting bundled for 50 runs consistently is surely a connoisseurs delight. Who doesn't enjoy watching spinners throw darts and batsmen planting their feet and hitting the ball across the line. Watching players gut it out in the test match arena is boring. Three day test matches are the real deal.

Silly me!

Jesus fing Christ!

There's just too much limited overs cricket played internationally and domestically and the younger players are being brought up with T20 the popular format for most nations, not Test cricket.

The drop in quality of players in the Test arena is incredible compared to the players teams had 10 years ago. In 10 years time I think Test cricket will be dead, or will be so poor it will become an extended version of ODIs played over the course of 3 days. I doubt we'll see many 5-day matches unless we get flatter than flat pitches which make a positive result almost impossible.

Look at New Zealand - absolutely useless in the Test series but then they push SA all the way in the ODIs. I think Pakistan will do the same. Teams are more suited to the shorter format of the game and I think most of the players/national boards would prefer to play limited overs cricket as opposed to learn the technique and temperament to be a Test player.

Ah yes! I forgot teams getting bowled out for single figures was a new phenomena solely due to the advent of ODI and T20 cricket and the lack of practice games and this was something unheard of in the golden days of test match cricket. My bad!

Cricket is dying because SA are dominating but when Australia were dominating all was rosy with test cricket. Splendid Logic!

David Warner is the first test batsman in the history of test cricket who has shite technique and likes to attack so it obviously indicates that test cricket is dying!

Touring sides being shite away from = test cricket dying. Shocker!

Shhhhh...........

Pakistan's development has stalled because they don't play international test cricket much.

If we lose this, it's all on Smith's very early declaration. We won't lose though.

Would be wrapped up before the end of the second session today. Happy that Pakistan is showing semblance of a fight.

Steyn again picks up 5 wickets. Monster.

Easy win. It was foolish of me to think our batting could do something against that bowling attack. Immense performance from SA.

Steyn needs 240 wickets to break McGrath's record for most Test wickets by a seamer. I think he should be able to get that record.

Not sure if this is reliable but on Wiki it says Steyn has the 3rd best strike rate of all time behind George Lohmann and Shane Bond.

P.S Shocked to see Bond only played 18 tests. Could have been up there with Steyn imo

That he is back and played for the rest of India squad is a scary prospect. I hope we don't go down the Appam Chutiya lane again.

When will Harbhajan stop living off that series against Australia? He should be nowhere near the squad but will probably play anyway

fecking Philander and DRS

Brilliant fightback from Younis & Shafiq, unfortunately Younis couldn't make it to stumps. Hopefully we can get to 400 but I think we'll be out for 320.

Junaid will be a miss for our bowling attack. I'm looking forward to seeing what the giant Irfan can do.
