Starc's taken a bit of stick in this innings, but he's going to be one of the best bowlers in the world in a few years. Him and Pattinson, if the injuries stay away.

Lyon is absolutely garbage. How you can be an international standard spinner just serving the ball up hoping to get wickets is beyond me.

Especially in a big nation such as Australia.

Really needs to stop bowling short and wide.
Needs a bit of mongrel. Some fight to fire up and have a dig.

This field is a bit of a joke that he's been given as well.

At least Lyon-o can catch. Shit gets wickets.

Bloke today while I was umpiring got 98 didn't look like getting out, hit balls to all parts then gets this fully from a gumby spinner that comes on outside off stump going to be a noball off the pitch and skys it to deep cover. Out..

Shit gets Wickets... LOL

Impressive SA can win this match and thus the series. Winning at England and then Australia would be a brilliant achievement.

Unfortunately we have no one else, and it seems the selector will never go for an all out pace attack. I don't think we have any quality spinners coming through the ranks either.

Shaping up to be a superb final test. Would be fitting if Ricky signs out with a century that earns at least a draw but I'd like to see a SA victory.

Hope Ricky gets a duck personally. But when he does go it will only go and further highligh the weakness of the Australian top order. They are heavily dependent on Clarke and Hussey and on the very odd occasion neither deliver, they are pretty screwed as evident today.

Aussies have been the better side over the first 2 tests. Yet SA should prob win the series.

This is why I hate a 3 match series between 2 good teams.

3 consecutive reverse sweep fours from AB

Haven't seen test match batting like this in a long, long time.

Jadeja has again scored a triple century. His second in the last month or so. No matter what the bowlers or pitches are, that's an amazing achievement.

Will be an incredible achievement if Australia hold out for the draw.

Amla is class. AB needed a big innings to regain some confidence with the bat, his strike-rate was also much better than the last game!

I disagree. I think it's a damning indictment of the bowlers and the pitches.

You still need a shit load of temperament and class to score triple centuries. If the bowlers and pitches were so shit, then guys like Raina and Rohit Sharma would've been scoring triple centuries at will.

The pitches used in Ranji are way too flat. Sachin scored runs for fun in his recent Ranji match while he is in such poor form.

I think guys like Raina and Rohit have too much class for Ranji. What's the challenge there for them? Their battles are against themselves more than anything else.

Jadeja's career peaks at that level. If Raina/Rohit score 10 centuries in a season in Ranji, get into the Indian team, you can expect them to score at least a century or two over a season.

If Jadeja scores 2 triple hundreds in a season, the best he'll make playing for India will be still less than 60.

Agree with crappy's point above. Look at how terribly Sachin is batting. It's a wonder a guy who is moving like that makes 30 runs, but he hit something like a run-a-ball century in that Ranji match.

They need to cut down on the number of teams and do something about the pitches. It's a farce.

I mean, look at this scorecard:

http://www.espncricinfo.com/india/engine/match/574036.html

Who on earth are these bowlers he's playing against? Looking at the 'quality' we've got sitting on the Indian bench, it's no wonder. I accept your point about temperament, but I think the quality of bowling is THAT bad that it mitigates the requirement for first-class standard temperament.

Nice tribute and respect from the South Africans to Ricky.

Finally comes to an end. Never really liked the man but that doesn't stop me admitting that he is one of the modern day greats. Has more results to show for than Tendulkar or Lara.

You would think that Sachin would take a clue and retire after the current series. Though it is unlikely to happen as Kallis is still playing and is on 44 test centuries. :(

Looks like this could be over by the end of today. After a good start the aussies have been second best for most of this match

What a great series with both teams exchanging the upper hand. This is what world cricket needs more often. Chuffed for the South Africans. The rightful owners of the number 1 slot after the Australians. India and England there in the middle was such bullshit.

Pleased for South Africa and also for Kirsten.

Maybe so but neither had the likes of Warne, McGrath, Gilchrist, Hayden and to a lesser extent Lee and Langer demoralizing teams before a ball had even been bowled. What Ponting has done is great, but he also had a huge safety net around him for most of his career. He is a great, but for me Lara is still the top batsmen from the last 20 years.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan on Twitter: "The best batsman I had the privilege to play against was Ricky Ponting. Australian cricket will not be the same without him. Punter played better against me than Sachin Tendulkar did. Both are incredible players, but if I had to pick one it would be Ricky."

Sad as I love and admire Sachin Tendulkar, but if my life depended on it, I'd pick Steve Waugh or Ricky Ponting above him to win me a test match.

I wouldn't pick Lara though.

Regardless, captaincy and leadership skills aside, thats the company Ponting rightfully keeps as his legacy.

Ponting said Sachin's the best batsman he's played against.

But that Lara was the bigger matchwinner.

Sachin's the best I've seen. Ponting would be second with Lara & Kallis joint 3rd (I like Kallis too much to leave him out of the top 3).
