Cricket

Do any of you post/follow the match day threads on Reddit? At tea, so many people on Reddit were saying things like “India can win here..”, “Draw is a certainty..” etc etc. I couldn’t understand if all of them were being sarcastic or if they had no understanding of test cricket.

I think Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should just retire. Or at the very least be dropped from the team. Bring in Gill and maybe a bowler (or maybe Jurel) for the next test and see how that goes.

This series if anything, has highlighted the lack of bowling options for India again. The pace bowlers in the current squad aren’t good enough to contain runs and build pressure for the team or take wickets themselves. Akashdeep went past the bat a few times, so maybe good enough to be the third bowler but when Siraj is out of form, Akashdeep can’t become the 2nd bowler and the other two - Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana aren’t good either.

Something needs to be done to improve the bench strength. It won’t happen overnight but unfortunately it doesn’t even appear that the team management is building towards that.

We aren't a country for bowlers (fast, spin anything) anymore due to the IPL. The MRF pace academy isn't working anymore and the spin cupboard is dry other than all rounders who are bat first. Add in hero culture and it's a wonder we do well considering the baggage we carry.

Shami, Zaheer, Bumrah and Srinath (before we overbowled him) are the exception to the rule in the last 30 years

What about Inglis, Matt Renshaw or even Oliver Davies?
I think the selectors really want a seam-bowling allrounder as opposed to a spinning allrounder in the no. 6 spot. Inglis is a keeper-batsman (whose batting hasn't really impressed me in ODIs), and both Renshaw and Davies are pretty much part-time off spinners rather than genuine allrounders like Mitch Marsh or Aaron Hardie are. Long-term, the spot is Cameron Green's, but at least for the next test in Sydney, maybe a spinning allrounder could be useful, but the two remaining allrounders in the squad are the uncapped Beau Webster and Sean Abbott. Neither is one for the future (Webster is 31, Abbott is almost 33), so I can see Marsh keeping his spot since he's the incumbent, until Green is fit again (or they are willing to give Hardie a chance).

Again that's an easy excuse. He is a professional cricketer getting paid a lot so he needs to do better.
Agreed. It’s one thing to lose concentration and play a drive, nick outside off… entirely different to smash it to deep mid wicket.

Cummins is just a monster of a cricketer
Really is. There are some guys who when they’re batting you know they won’t do nonsensical things to get out. I feel that way about Cummins in every aspect of cricket - captaincy, bowling, batting, off the field interviews. Just incredibly measured and thoughtful. He’s one of the greats.

Maybe if the media and fans stop hyping him up for his falling-over-scoop shots and give him the Gavaskar treatment of "Shame! Shame! Shame!", it might calm him down.

There's nothing wrong with his scoop shots or game play - he has won us lots of games doing that

Yesterday the win wasn't on the table and the shot was uncalled for, and it should be criticised. But that does not mean he's wrong every time: the risk-reward on average for him works in the team's favour.

On a related subject. What do you think of Cooper Connelly as a possible opener? I've really only seen him in the BBL, but he seems to have decent technique and is still young.

They'll flog him in the champions trophy again(I am sure Rohit and Virat would've retired from ODIs if not for the thought they can ride on his coat tails for another shot at a trophy), then the IPL.

It's a shame Shami is injured.

Far too much politicking in Indian cricket, it’s the main thing holding them back from dominating the entire sport in my opinion. Ashwin retiring mid series, the captain ‘opting’ out of the 5th test, it doesn’t seem like a happy dressing room.

Feels like a big toss tonight. India could really do with having a bat and posting 350+.

Protects Bumrah for another day or two.

If Australia get in and post a good total I can see it being a thrashing.

Thankfully Marsh dropped for Webster. Webster has been one of the best performers in Australian domestic cricket over the last 24 months (averages 50 odd with the bat and 30 odd with the ball over that period). Good addition to the side.

Marsh turns into Gary Sobers when it's the Ashes so would happily see him dropped for next winter

India continuing with playing 3 all rounders. Very bizarre approach. They could drop Washington and play another batsmen.

Media stories are true and Rohit Sharma doesn’t play. Won’t be surprised if he retires from test cricket after this.

India have a huge end of an era feel to them as we pretty much all knew. Would be funny if they could nick a 2-2 - need 300+ minimum first up.

It's a very weird situation. They generally do well when up against it but if they don't win there is going to be a lot of reports about the ugly situation in the dressing room

The reports have started already. Gambir surely won't be in that role long but I can't claim to be an expert on Indian cricket politics.

I think it’ll be difficult for India, dropping the captain mid series is far from ideal and the batsman are under pressure, but there’s still plenty of batting talent in that side.

Ravi Shastri is pathetic, did the toss and just acted like nothing had happened with the Indian team. Surely it's a big deal that India have a different captain and he didn't ask a single question about Rohit.

Happy to admit I am fully rattled that the Aussie commentators keep saying winning this series trophy will complete the legacy for this set of players.

They've never won a series In England!!!!!

They haven't won in England series nor have they beaten India in India.

England 2009-2013/14 was the team closest to having a complete set of results, but that was marred by a 3-0 vs Pakistan in UAE (vs two chuckers, must be said) and getting battered by South Africa at home (Complete with KP-gate).

I'm glad I wasn't the third umpire for that one but I think I'd have given the benefit to the fielder. Out.

I’m shocked that was not given out… what the feck. I’m out so granted haven’t heard the commentary or umpire decision but saw the footage and looks out

Cricket still doesn't seem to have particularly clear rules on catches like that. I'm a cricket nerd and it confuses the feck out of me.

Has soft signal on field gone now?

Yeah, was the soft signal out? Or is that not a thing anymore?

I’d love to hear what everyone else thinks. How the feck is that not out?

I think that England will get destroyed next year but one thing I am certain about is that they won't get bogged down scoring 180 runs in 70+ overs

Different strokes for different folks. I'll take getting bogged down if we only lose the series 2-1 or manage to draw it 2-2. England play high risk, high reward cricket. If it goes right, they could rattle Australia - the age is showing for Starc, Hazlewood and Lyon right now..

Your a fan of 180 all out after 70 overs?

I don’t think England will get destroyed. I think they’re aging and it showed in the first test. At this stage, one year is a long time and I expect their bowlers to be less effective.
