Cricket

Don't see a way back for India now. Batting is not dependable and a presence like Pujara is sorely missed.

Virat and Rohit will just make up the numbers. I think he got extremely lucky in the first.test to get that century

Been pretty awesome from the Aussies so far. Bumrah and to a lesser degree Ashwin the only consistently threatening Indian bowlers this test

Haven’t been able to watch a single ball.. looks 1-1 barring a Rishabh miracle. Poor showing from us on all accounts. Siraj needs to be benched..

Yeah he was poor. Also didn’t exactly conduct himself with class for the Head dismissal

no surprise - he behaves regularly like a prick.

Think Shami’s coming in for the next test but bit of a gamble. He has some games behind him in domestic cricket after a year long injury.

Surely Indian team management will take a look at their batting this test match? Didn’t even play 90 overs in both innings combined. Horrible batting performance. But I guess Rana/Ashwin will be dropped for someone instead.

Finally a cohesive Aus performance.

Both very strong at their best, both have significant vulnerabilities. Hard to pick this.

Listening to the excellent Wisden podcast who have broken down SA's likely run to the WTC final.

They will (probably) get there having not played England or India, and sent their C team to get whacked over in NZ last year.

Flawed format but I hope they develop the idea. It's a good boost for SA Cricket regardless.

I like the wtc. It’s a good backdrop to the season. We need other teams - especially England - making it to the final for it to gain popularity.

How’s the wisden podcast? Not a regular listener of any, but I play some episodes of The Final Word and the Grade Cricketer when india are touring away. Final Word is good, and the Grade Cricketer are funny.

Shami not going to be trusted in test matches till he plays for a few months I think.

Ashwin shouldn’t have been picked to begin with. I would have dropped Siraj and picked another fast bowler. Siraj is on a downward slope from about two years now

Agreed, love the idea , needs more tweaking. SA getting better is great news for cricket fans.

Interesting that India chose to bowl first and Rana dropped rather than Siraj. Also jadeja instead of Washy.

Hugely recommend the Wisden pod. England focused but always covers world cricket properly. Gets loads of Indian listeners and there's no agenda at all.

I find Grade Cricketer to much personally, funny sound bites but otherwise its a painful listen for my taste.

Forecast does not look for next 4 days. Could be a complete wash out. What happens to WTC in this scenario: AUS wins 3-1, SA wins 1-0. OR. IND wins 3-1, SA wins 1-0.
While AUS loses to SL 2-0.

I'll stick my neck out and say noone has any clue mate.

This Aussie top order is unwatchable. I understand battling in tough conditions is important in test cricket but this is extreme of that.

I love test cricket but not a fan of this batting. I understand the bowling is good but good batters should be able to do more than just survive
Fairly contextual though. Two heavily under pressure batters and some very good bowling. I think it’s more absorbing frankly than NZ v Eng (because of Eng, mind, not NZ), though I accept I may be in the minority there

It's not just two batters though, all of the top 4 at this point are just trying to survive & hope they can get some runs. Smith should really have been out there not offering a shot

Not trying to be provocative, what's annoying you about England?

You don’t reckon that makes it absorbing? Because it’s not negative cricket per se, they’re just being penned in by a strong bowling performance. The intent is there, they’re just not finding scoring balls.

No that’s okay, it’s a fair question. I think annoying is probably too strong a word. Hard to describe exactly what I dislike about it but perhaps this example will help: I love the way Root plays, and I hate the way Crawley plays. Too many English players seem to veer towards the Crawley approach. And for what it’s worth, I basically don’t watch any limited overs cricket, so that probably tells you what I like/dislike in cricket.

I would take 3-2 for wtc so dont want a washout
I assume 3-1 is bette than 3-2?

You get points for a draw and none for a win.

No idea of other nuances which you might know.

Anyhow, I think it is more likely that we lose this 4-1. Bumrah cannot bowl us to to a win all by himself. He needs 2 others to do a job.

Draw are getting very rare nowadays, unless significant time is lost. My thinking is that we are going to be 2-1 going into 4th test. I dont think we are winning Gabba. most likely every test match will have a result.
BTW, keep picking Siraj is not going to change matters as well.

avoiding follow on here gets us a draw. I’m hoping for that

I can’t remember an Australia test being rain affected this way. Or it ever raining in a test match actually.
