Cricket

I wouldn't compare Anderson to Steyn. Steyn is a genuine fast bowler, Anderson isn't. Steyn is the best strike bowler in the world. But Anderson can even get a 20 over old Kookaburra ball to swing in the sub continent. Ideally you'd like 1 of each in your team.

Fair summary.
Anderson and Steyn opening pairing would be the best in world cricket.

While people are at it, how would you compare current branch of medium/fast bowlers including steyn and anderson with bowlers like Mcgrath, Allan donald, Wasim akram, Waqar younis that is bowlers from around 1994 onwards? I don't remember too much from pre 2000 era myself. Although Mcgrath was just class.

Just Steyn is around those guys. Don't forget Ambrose and Walsh from that era!

That's a pretty awesome YouTube channel, loads of videos of those bowlers you mentioned.

I remember the days of Gardner & Holding, etc. Your talking about 6ft9" guys bowling > 90mph very very accurately. The best I've ever seen for sure. The Windies were unbeatable in those days, I'm absolutely convinced they were far & away the best side ever because they had the best bowlers ever.

I'm playing a cricket draft in newbs, if I organise one in this forum, who all would be willing to play.

I'm in. Fix timings though, bit tough to keep track of this forum.

No such timings, but every player will get twelve hours to make their pick. If we get like eight players, I'll start.

I'm in. My knowledge of cricket is limited, though. I started watching regularly only in the last 4 years(although I've been watching damn near everything in this time)

You can count me in too. What era of players are we talking about? All time or just recently?

Good stuff. I'll be more focused on post 92 players for obvious reasons.

Andy Roberts, Michael Holding, Joel Garner and Malcolm Marshall, sheer hell on earth. Marshall was the best IMO, matching aggression and guile with pace.

If there is one thing worse than the end of the football season it is the beginning of the cricket season.

Cricket is good, tho' I was always crap at it except catching/fielding (most things I'm crap at I seem to decide I don't like much).

Bet you haven't seen test cricket in a long time.

Saw him bowl versus Sri Lanka and Pakistan recently.. James Anderson is the real deal.

But as good as Anderson is, Steyn is even better. Anderson will go down as one of the best bowlers of his generation(if you count only his form of the last 2 years), Steyn will go down as one of the best ever.

It isn't much to claim he'll go down as one of the best of his generation. It's an abysmal generation of fast bowlers. Steyn, though, would be great in any generation. Besides, two years is nothing. Look at their respective career statistics. Steyn has been consistently brilliant rather than for awhile.

No comparison whatsoever. Forget fast bowlers, bowling in general has taken a backseat. The quality is awful. There was a point where Warne, Murli, Kumble, Ambrose, Donald, Akram, Younis, Mcgrath, Pollock etc all played at the same time. The only one right now I think will enter into that category is Steyn. One bowler

McGrath and Pollock's line and length bowling was phenomenal for years. Pollock lost it a bit towards the end though.

I'm not even sure if Steyn can be considered as part of that group. Perhaps towards the bottom end.

I think Finn will end up in that group eventually, along with Cummings and Pattinson.

Holding, Knight and Hussain are chatting a huge amount of shit today. Get me Atherton!

You know watching how Narine bowled in this IPL, I don't think the England would've stood any chance against him. Not a single batsmen in the IPL(Even on batsmen friendly wickets) were able to pick them.

Think today showed just how much more difficult it is to be effective at Test level. The bit I saw of the match it seemed like both Bell and Pietersen were picking him, and his figures only recovered slightly with Finn blocking him out at the end. Granted must be a difficult pitch for spin bowling, Swann looked pretty ineffectual as well, but the step up from IPL to test is vast.

I'm going to be back playing this season after 5 years, my gear is shite now, where is best to get some really cheap bargains online and what's the best gear these days, it used to be Slazenger, Grey Nicholls or Kookaburra but there seems to be a million brands now?!

Absolutely gutted to hear that Tom Maynard the 23 year old Surrey and England Lions batsman has passed away aged 23. Was a hugely promising player, definitely would have represented England at some point.

R.I.P. Tom Maynard and condolences to his family.
