Cricket

I think in the moment behaviour is something that should generally only lead to a fine but the post match stuff as a captain is really pathetic

Concussion substitute has been used for the first time in Test cricket history as Sarfraz Ahmed was hit on the helmet vs Sri Lanka. Mo Rizwan has taken his place.

Not in test cricket.

  • M Labuschagne replaced SPD Smith as a concussion substitute during the England 2nd innings

Marnus Labuschagne's ascent to the higher echelons of Test batting was an extraordinary tale of making the most of an unexpected opportunity. During the Lord's Ashes Test against England in August 2019, Steven Smith was felled by Jofra Archer's bouncer and Labuschagne would become his concussion substitute - the first time in Test history the protocol had been used.

Pakistan win by an innings and 100+ runs which is a great result. Early days, but maybe a renaissance in Pakistan test cricket - we have a few batters who are able to take the load of Babar.

there's a lot of chatter/criticism about India's performance in WI

I'm puzzled by it because some young guys have shown huge potential and it is starting to look like a team that could be very good in 2-3 years time

Jaiswal had some big scores. Varma played some class innings.

Jaiswal, Shubman, Varma are 3 incredible talents to build your top order around for all formats. They're 21, 23, 20 years.

Wahab Riaz retired today. Here’s a breakdown of his most famous spell:

Pakistan top of the rankings for WTC and ODIs.

Why is salt not in the WC squad? Everytime I see him he's so destructive
He’s not been in great form up until the last couple of games I think. This has been an incredible innings from all three of them so far.

It must have been the last few games I've seen then.

Even then in game England have massive decisions to make, the batting line up can go any direction.

My biggest issue is the stupid scoreboard on the telly. If they can revert that to a normal one I would much prefer it.

I'm fully for modernizing and innovation in cricket. This is not it. At risk of doing the complete opposite.
There’s definitely things that I feel are a bit unnecessary, and I’ll only watch the Sky commentary because BBC is almost unwatchable for me, but I also think it’s popular to shit on it for reasons that aren’t really relevant.

I keep reading people talking about how it forced the Ashes to be crammed into a smaller period of time, and similar things that just don’t really stand up.

There is of course very relevant discussions to be had around the county game etc.

Can you name me a positive of it that if the T20 had the same backing it also could not have achieved?

The Hundred wont be here in 3 years. No other country will ever play it.

There’s been huge positives but it’s impossible for me to quantify how it would compare to a T20 tournament. I’m not even bothered about trying to defend it vs traditional cricket because I’d rather be watching a T20 without the gimmicks. However I’m not snobby about it, people who haven’t watched it out of principle have missed some incredible cricket.

Completely agree. I also like the idea of trying small changes to see if it makes the game more interesting. For example I like the idea of a bowler bowling well getting 10 balls in a row

Really enjoyed the Hundred this year. Having Buttler at his best helped the tournament. Could do with some more financial backing overall to really entice the big name overseas players.

T20 is a terrific format, England is one of the few places with great cricket following, and I don't understand why ECB doesn't create a T20 league in the IPL mould..

Well that’s what the Hundred effectively is. Reality there’s not much difference minus 20 balls. The ECB is trying to go out on its own but long term I think outside finance will have to be a factor a bit like the SA20.

It's not - it's T20(which has lots of bells and whistles) with even more bells and whistles.

None of my friends in India watch the Hundred. It's on TV.

I'd tune in if it was T20. Maybe there's actually nothing incremental to know or very little, but it's marketed in a way that makes me think it's something else.

Like you said it’s T20 with more bells and whistles.

I do agree it’s marketed in a way that it’s something else but all the stats from The Hundred feature in the players T20 stats.

The Hundred is good to have on in the background in the evening. I don't think it's anything particularly special or better than T20 franchises, and it's still nothing compared to international cricket.

I have nothing against the Hundred format itself, and as someone who isn’t really into cricket, a game that’s played in the evening and can be wrapped up in two and a half hours could potentially get me more interested in the sport.

But I found the BBC’s coverage incredibly off putting. Commentators and random celebrities in the commentary box who rattle on about everything but the match in front of them (Greg James the other day was particularly annoying), inane interviews with fielders while play is in progress - why should I care about this sport when nobody in the commentary team seems to?
