Cricket

Yeah the Head/Smith partnership was the difference, from that point on India would threaten to get an angle back into the game only for Australia to eke out a useful partnership or India to lose a soft wicket. It’s a very tall order coming back from that because you basically need to be perfect and the other team needs to have a very bad day.

I kind of get where Gavaskar is coming from, the top 6 got starts in both innings and didn’t kick on, if they had one partnership like the Head/Smith one then it’s pretty tight game. I think he’s also getting at a wider pattern too where the batting hasn’t really put in the big scores that they need, the averages over this cycle were pretty poor and I think India need to start blooding 1-2 more of the next generation. Gill really needs to be in the prime middle order slot too.

The Ashwin exclusion was flat out weird, he’s played at the Oval for Surrey too so I don’t really understand what India were thinking, especially with how hot and dry it is in England at the minute. It was obvious the pitch would turn towards the end and with all their left handers he was a great match up.

Yea - agree on your point re Gavaskar - I know what he's saying. We definitely batted badly.

In hindsight, I think the decision to bowl first at the toss had a bigger bearing on the game than leaving Ashwin out. Even if you pick Ashwin, I'm not sure he has any impact here if he's bowling at Australia on day 1 where they set the game up.

With the same team, I can imagine India competing better if batting first.

It's quite underrated to me what runs on the board does in a final -- this is seen time and again.

Do the Indian selectors have something against Ashwin? He often seems to get left out of the team when on the surface you would think he would be an almost automatic choice. Yadav is a bang average bowler, yet he was picked ahead of him. I've also seen it happen numerous times before. Nathan Lyon is one of the first names on the team sheet for Australia but IMLTHO Ashwin is a better bowler and a significantly better batsman yet he struggles to get in the team. The guy has 450+ test wickets. Talk about getting no respect.
The management have just created a myth that India has to play with 4 pacers whenever they see some grass. I don't have issue with ashwin being dropped if you have 4 quality pacers but not dropped for average bowlers like yadav and thakur.

Not saying ashwin would have made india win but defenitely would have bowled well on day 1 as well as to carey and starc. Also, a better batsmen than most.

Who do we have as favourites for the ashes?

Australia looked rusty this test while bowling. Cummins surprised me by how poor he was again, he was poor v India in India as well.

I think an on form Australian team wins in England, but with Cummins' form right now, and Starc the way he is(rarely a great test bowler, often an average one), a bazball victim waiting to happen, makes the game about even. Or even England slight favourites.

This is the strongest Australian batting lineup in maybe a decade though.

Wtf! Windies unlikely to qualify for the WC now.

Beek in the super over scored 30 runs and took 2 wickets. Those match figures to the right don't do him justice

West Indies fail to qualify for the World Cup after being comfortably beaten by Scotland.

Kumble on commentary.. Just said Injuries are part and parcel of the game...
He is commentating with Saba Karim ..

Between this scorecard, not qualifying for the ODI World Cup and the onset of franchise contracts I’m seriously worried for the future of West Indies cricket.

Catastrophe struck Saba in 2000. An Anil Kumble delivery ricocheted of the batsman’s pad and hit bang on his right eye in an Asia cup match in Bangladesh. Even a series of surgery could not save his macula. Left with very little vision Saba’s indomitable spirit was not convinced to give in. Riding on a sheer conviction Karim won his one and only test cap against the same country where the tragedy occurred. Sadly the lack of vision was discernible since he was unable to judge the trajectory of the ball.

Kumble was terror for wicketkeepers.

If England are saving test cricket then these two are destroying it. Windies for being shite and India for ruining the classic test kit with those horrible Adidas stripes.

Jaiswal is a supreme talent. Gill and Jaiswal should be India's opening batters after the WC.

Certainly a far cry from the pitches that had English bats fearing for their lives.

looks like ground staff did not get enough time to prepare this pitch. Turn, bounce , no pace..

They really are in a sorry state, alot of their top players not just prefer franchise cricket. To think they were once the best team in the world. Really sad. I hope they can come good again.

Sabina Park Pitch

That's one of the cracks in the pitch in the match that was called off in 1998.

Hard to believe that that could be served up for a test match.

Interestingly there's now more extended footage of that day's 'play'.

Is this Windies batsman the largest cricketer in history? He's somehow bigger than the Bermudan whale.

What is the point of selecting Rahane? Dravid was not a good captain and he's not a good coach. A brilliant batsman. These guys need to either perform or perish. Huge line of hungry batsmen waiting to prove themselves.

The issue is deeper than Dravid. Every Indian superstar player is also a celebrity in other ways and become undroppable. Sachin hung around for longer than he should, Dhoni began by dropping Sehwag and then stuck around for 3 years messing up the team costing us a shot at the world cup, and Virat's doing the same now for last few years. They should all have been left out 2-3 years earlier.

Bit "no atheists in foxholes" like -- once they start being bad, they abandon their "Team comes first" spiel and the selectors have no power to get rid of them.

Rahane's not quite that category of elite player, but it's a symptom of the same issue.

Pujara's been better at red ball cricket than Virat for 3 years now, and Pujara got kicked out because he's not a celebrity like Virat. They average exactly the same, but Pujara's put up better numbers in crunch matches, and also has a very good recent domestic record to fall back on in the last 6 months.

100%. The poor returns over last 10 years (excluding Australia test series wins) in international tournaments given the bench strength we have is shameful. I blame the culture (Pop Culture) created by Kohli, Rohit etc.
We could field 2 different teams and they both can hang out with the best of the world, yet no international trophies.
Dhoni's all sins are forgiven in my heart once WC was secured. I would do the same to Rohit as well if he does that (<2%chance) in 4 months.

Naseem Shah and Abrar Ahmed have ripped through Sri Lanka. If Pakistan are able to put on a big total, do they go top of this cycle of the WTC?

Surprised no one here is losing their shyt over the West Indies-India game becoming rain affected on day 5.

Ummm, can you imagine social media if it were a crucial test that they were comfortably going to win, which instead led to them losing a series against Pakistan. Heads would be well and truly lost.

Unrelated but Harmanpreet kaur’s behaviour in Bangladesh was pretty embarrassing. I understand that the umpiring in Bangladesh can be bad but her reaction was way over the top and childish.

It was dreadful. Should be banned for 5-10 matches

Sri Lanka vs Pakistan now getting washed out.
