England picking one-day team for a Test match. Test Cricket should be about picking specialists batsmen and bowlers.

3 wicketkeepers and 4 all-rounders. Unheard of before this test match.

Rediculous pitch. Not taking anything away from the Windies, but after starting off as a placid slow pitch for the first two sessions the pitch has turned into an unplayable horror show. What a farce!

Except they did it in their last test match .

Really happy that this has happened. England take the fecking piss with their XI. Sam Curran instead of Broad was such a fecking defensive pick.
Agree.

This innings Curran has bowled six overs and Rashid none.

Still think Root and Bayliss are a poor captain-coach combo. Defensive and unimaginative. We've had a lot of luck in the last couple of series and coming home to roost today.

I don't think the selection is the *main* problem here. It's the same set of problems it's always been since Bayliss took charge. No quality batsmen in county cricket and no proper quick bowlers either. England are yet to replace Strauss and Trott, never mind Cook. Also I think Root is the only batsman who has played more than 10 tests and averages above 40 in this team. I don't really see what England could do from a selection point.

I think Root can be a bit defensive but he's learning his craft and I don't think either him or Bayliss could be questioned for being unimaginative. They deserve credit for how they selected and executed in Sri Lanka. Batsmen not being good enough goes beyond captain and possibly beyond coach, feels systemic right now. I guess it depends where you sit on whether or not Stokes, Ali, Bairstow etc. are getting the most out of their skillset as batsmen.

Agree. Lack of batting depth is the biggest issue.

When was the last time England won batting 2nd?

Edit found it 18 months ago Vs Windies but away from home was 3 years ago Vs South Africa

Good day out in the middle so far after coming close to a collapse yesterday.

You were saying..

I would like to see England come out and try blocking 6 sessions or whatever it is WI give them.

Haven't seen that kind of a game in awhile

The last time I recall it happening was the SA tour of India when AB and Amla just stood out there blocking for God knows how long. Think that was indeed a few years back.

Khawaja in the UAE is the most recent one I think - that was 4 sessions. Didn't catch that game.

Before that, I remember 4 - one with India vs SA which you refer to but I can't remember who did what.. I think that was the test with Du Plessis cramping, Steyn/Philander almost winning it. 2x Australia vs SA - du Plessis and de Villiers both involved again. And Gambhir vs NZ at Napier.

I remember an extremely infuriating Sehwag dismissal in this and Cricinfo backs me up.

Patel to Sehwag, OUT, Jeetan Patel takes out Sehwag. You can also say Sehwag has taken out himself. It was floated on the off stump line, Sehwag went for the big swing over midwicket, on a bent knee and missed. The ball wobbled on to hit the back leg around the line of off stump. Critics will go after him for his shot selection, his supporters will say that's how he plays, why crib when he fails now and then.

Looks like it's a featherbed again. Uncanny eh.

England are gonna lose by like 500 runs and they'll probably still win the series. Never seen a team have such a disparity between their lowest level and highest level.

Good thing stats padders like Lara aren't around these days. He would have batted until tea day 5 to get to his personal best before declaring.

Burns, Jennings, Bairstow, Root, Buttler, Stokes, Foakes, Ali, Woakes, Broad, Anderson

I would like to see this 11. Don't understand why Buttler hides at 6 or 7.

I think the onne issue with the above team is it is sti ll a bit batting light because the top 3 are not reliable, yet. But I like seeing the best 4 bowlers picked. Not 10 bits and pieces players, as well as it works for England..

Jennings shouldn't be playing and I have little faith in Bairstow any more, he gets bowled far too often for a test batsman. Stokes and Ali need to seriously step up with the bat, I fear they might have broken Mo from a batting perspective having shunted him all over the order.

I really think right now England could have Woakes opening instead of Jennings and be no worse as a batting team whilst having a decent bowler at hand. Outside of the current team it appears Roy is the next cab off the rank. I think Vince might get another chance too.

Rashid is so bad it’s a miracle he still gets picked for England. He hasn’t done anything of note in Tests for years now.
He literally got a five-for in the last game mate

I agree he's seriously inconsistent but if Root had a clue how to use him he might have a chance.

:wenger:

Why is Rashid even in the team if Jennings and Root are bowling?

Likely his last match on the tour. Most likely the Wicketkeeper and Rashid will be dropped next match.

Bowling Jennings is not a good idea when he'll be out trying to save his wicket later this evening. Needs to get his mind ready for batting.

Great post.

The pitch has been an absolute circus and I’m getting criticized for pointing it out. Yesterday 18 wickets fell, today none so far and it’s almost the end of play. Go figure...
That said nothing held against the Windies who are giving England a right old pasting.

0 wickets in a full days play, unbelievable especially when 18 fell yesterday, fully expect a trademark England collapse some point tomorrow

The way Root has used Rashid has been appalling. Rashid hasn't helped himself, for sure, but Root couldn't have done more to deflate his confidence. He only seems to bring him on as a last resort after everyone else as failed, or gives him a couple of token overs before a break. Then takes him off and sticks a part-timer on instead.

Then he keeps throwing the ball to Curran despite the fact that he's averaging about one wicket per test. Opponents must be delighted when they see Curran trundling in.

Sorry but Root is an average captain at best. He's a great batsman but we won't become truly consistent until we get a better leader. Sounds like they're grooming Buttler for the job which suggests they're already thinking beyond the current regime.
