Cricket

Herath is brilliant to watch.

Credit to Zimbabwe. They've done very well all things considered.

Zimbabwe are in an excellent position to win the match. Would be astonishing.

Shout out and massive credit to Zimbabwe despite the impending Test defeat in Sri Lanka. Fantastic win in the ODI series and put up a real good fight in the Test, better than most would have thought. Scored 356 and 377 but looks like Sri Lanka are going to chase down the target of 388. Still for an away performance represents a real step in the right direction for them. What they lack in talent (compared to other Test nations) they more than make up for in spirit.

I don't know if anyone is watching the Women's World Cup match between Australia and India.
I'm sat in the stands at Derby and that innings from Kaur, wow!
171*, 5th highest individual score ever in women's cricket.
Australia have just lost a wicket in the 2nd over, could be India's day.

Wowser! Of the top of my head can't think of a better innings in a world by any Indian keeping in mind the context and stage

Caught the last five overs and that was incredible to watch.

I don't find women's cricket exciting and do not watch it. That knock by Harmanpreet Kaur has implications far beyond cricket -- let's hope our women win it tomorrow.

Was a cracking innings. Rather enjoyed her losing her shit when she reached her century, as well.

You think it would be important for women in India?

Absolutely. While some of the major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Banglore have modernized, they represent a very small fraction of the Indian population in terms of mindset. 99%+ of India would never send their girl child to partake in sports. There is a lot of restrictions on girl children when growing up - get home by 5pm, don't go out to the movies alone - and that sort of thing. Pockets of modern cities have moved along, but the women's team's accomplishment in getting it this far and possibly beyond is going to make parents let their girls go out and participate. The impact of this is not restricted to sport - it changes things beyond that. It won't happen instantly, but these are the building blocks of future progress. The next in a line of achievements by the likes of Saina Nehwal, Sania Mirza, etc.

I still can't get over how quickly the women's game has developed here since I first started getting interested in it. A sold out Lords final is fecking incredible for the game.

I'd hope so. I've been close to a couple of women who grew up in India and even though they lived a more urban lifestyle they felt hugely restricted. One massive cricket fan who was banned from playing when she got to about ten and subsequently decided she supported England as she resented her country so.

All on Nat Sciver now.

The rest can all bat a bit but she's the only one who generally does so for more than a few overs.

I'll just crack on with my commentary...

Gunn's putting too much pressure on Brunt, here. She needs to start scoring very soon.

Just about got enough that Raj and Kaur will need to perform, to get these, I think.

Saw Smrithi Mandhana play in the first game and she looked a player. Hasn't got any runs since then, though.

Game completely in the balance.

Think my beloved is the key. If Brunt bowls at her best, at the start, she could take the top order out.

If not, I think we're in for a battle.

Yup - that 229 looks very far.

England bowling well.

Chasing in a final is always tough. I really think India needed to keep them to around 200. Those runs in the last few overs could be crucial to defend.

How can a top order bat get run out in the final like that?

@zing

Of course cricket >> other sports, but Saina Nehwal has (had?) been playing at a genuinely world-class level (and she's from Haryana!) but that doesn't seem to have changed much for ordinary women. Maybe more women are playing badminton but I don't think it's gone beyond that.

I would imagine the response to that is literally just repeating your first three words.
