Cricket

that was nearly a choke New Zealand's rugby team from world cups prior to 2011 would have been proud of. Fair play to New Zealand for doing enough to win. Both sides will need to be much better in the second game. Napier isn't the postage stamp ground Eden Park is. Eden Park isn't a happy hunting ground for Aussie teams.

Alastair Cook: England captain resigns after a record 59 Tests

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/38376729

Can't say I'm surprised, as soon as these rumours start if the player doesn't come out soon and nip it in the bud then there's obviously some truth to it. He's done a great job and I hope he remains available for selection.

Cook had to go. He was a good captain in England but if he was England's captain for their Ashes tour to Australia, you might as well hand the Ashed back before the series because Australia would have been clear favourites with Cook captaining England. Joe Root would be a decent enough choice if the job of captain doesn't weigh him down.

Good decision, hopefully he can concentrate on his batting and continues to play.

Right time. Hopefully will lead Root to take more responsibility and take the pressure off Cook.

Cook grew in to a good captain by the end but it never looked like it came naturally to him.

A shame really, I am sure he will carry on (he'd better, who else can we rely on to open for England after all?). Will go on to become a legend of the game setting records which will stand for years.

Still remember his debut (it was in India, wasn't it?) and they were already touting him as a future England captain even then.

If Joe Root is the next England captain, we'll have two baby faced captains in charge of their teams in the Ashes series. Steve Smith looks like he's 23, Root looks like he's 21 or something. When I told a mate of mine that Root got engaged, he said "that's illegal, he looks like he's 12."

Hit 300 in a 20/20 match.. how the feck did he manage that. I don't think I could manage that even if my nan was bowling to me.

What if your nan was bowling to you in a ground the size of your back garden?

Clearly he's a good player, he's played Ranji according to the article, and he'll go on to probably have a first class career at least as he's only 21.

But, these records are almost always say more about how much better than the league these players are than how good they are. Bit like that cnut who scored 1000 runs against a team that had never played with a hard ball before.

Virat Kohli continues his insanely rich vein of form. I think he's solved batting.

Oh of course, definitely has to be placed into context.. but still a remarkable score at any level of the game to be fair.

Indeed.

I always feel a bit bad when these stories break, but in particular that 1000 runs one really irritated me. The amount of praise that kid got for being a selfish cnut, and ruining some other kids afternoon was insane.

In fairness this one seems a lot more like this: http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/cricket/liam-livingstone-world-record-350-9078151 than that, but it still leaves a bit of a bad taste for me; mostly because I've been on the receiving end of opposition having massively better players and its not fun.

Yeah I get what you mean. I guess the only way to place these achievements into context is see how they do against proper opposition once they've achieved fame.

If he fails to make the grade, no one will give two shits about his record.

Man the list of people England have approached r.e. the captaincy is troublesome to say the least.

Buttler shouldn't even be in the side and Stokes and Broad would be daft for their own reasons.

Decent number of overseas players in the Pakistan Super League - which is being played in Dubai. Remember it being on Sky last year, so might watch a couple of matches if I get the chance.

Shame it's not being played in Pakistan. I suspect the number of overseas players would drop but international cricket needs to return in some format to Pakistan. It's been too long for security to be cited as the sole-reason not to play cricket there.

No chance it should be Broad or Stokes - don't think either has the temperament to be Test captain.

It's going to be Root - he's got the mental toughness for the role & he deserves it. Bairstow would be my vice-captain, but I think they'll give it Stokes.

Agreed on all counts other than vice-captain but that isn't a major issue to me. Stokes' concentration and aggression is put to better use just batting and bowling, he doesn't need this right now. Broad will be 31 this year and as a bowler won't be playing for more than another 3/4 years at most. Root, as a batsman and aged 26 is worth a punt and looks a good long term solution. The only thing I would say is if it's affecting his batting - he averages nearly 53 in Tests - then nip it in the bud early and be honest enough to admit it hasn't worked and let him get back to just batting.

Clearly will be Root, not sure who else they could have approached except for Bairstow or Ali.

My issue isn't so much that I think they will give it to anyone else but Root but that Stokes Broad and Buttler are even considered, or consider themselves, to be the nest in line. Two of them should be worrying about improving their game and the other didn't shower himself in praise when he had a captaincy opportunity.

It speaks of the lack of established players but the only two people that should be considered were Root and Bairstow.

What is even the meaning of this one off test between India and Bangladesh? Is it kind of a filler before the IPL? If so, why not play a series of 3 T20s with Bangladesh? Or is there some minimum number of test cricket that needs to be played?

With the total put on board, I don't think India will even bat again. Just one for the stats I guess.

When was the last time that international cricket was played in Pakistan?

Aren't Australia playing 4 tests in India before the IPL? Wouldn't have made sense playing 3 T20s.

2015.

They are? Sorry I just don't seem to be able to keep up the schedule these days. There seems to be a game every freaking day.

There was a time when I used to kinda sorta know what series would be up next - remember those days of watching India play Pakistan in Canada with Ganguly and his little seam bowling - feels so long ago and now I feel old. :(

South Africa back to no. 1 in ODI's. All set for another choke at this summer's ICC event.

It's the first time BCCI have invited Bangladesh to India for a test... Better now than never.

I don't get the reluctance of modern day captains to enforce the follow on.

It's bizarre. Lead of 300 ffs - what's Kohli thinking will happen? Bangladesh score a quickfire 500?!

Makes no sense especially when bowlers are relatively fresh one session in.

Is the Pakistan Super League on tv in the UK? one of the teams just got bowled out for 59.

It's on four channels actually. Available on Sky but not on Virgin Media.

It was a crazy game. Exactly what you expect from a team led by Baz McCullum. Carnage with the bat and aggressive in the field.

45 Number of Tests in which R Ashwin has completed 250 wickets - the quickest by any bowler. He bettered Dennis Lillee's record of 48 Tests by three matches. Among India bowlers, the fastest was Anil Kumble - 55 Tests.

Joe Root: England name batsman Test captain, succeeding Alastair Cook

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/38954275

Joe Root has been named as England's new Test captain.
The Yorkshire batsman, 26, succeeds Alastair Cook, who resigned last week after more than four years in charge.
"It is a huge honour to be given the Test captaincy," said Root, who will be the 80th man to lead the country in the longest form of the game. "I feel privileged, humbled and very excited."
Root steps up from vice-captain, with Durham all-rounder Ben Stokes, 25, filling the role as his deputy.
"The senior guys in the changing room play a very influential role and, whilst there's a natural progression for me, it's a huge support to know that they are there to help and advise," added Root.
"We have a very good group of players and I'm looking forward to leading them out in the summer, building on Alastair's achievements and making the most of our talents in the years ahead."
No batsman has scored more than Root's 4,594 runs since he made his Test debut in December 2012.
In the same time period, only India captain Virat Kohli has scored more runs than Root in all forms of international cricket.
"Joe is the right man to be our next Test captain and I'm thrilled that he has accepted the role," said England director of cricket Andrew Strauss.
"He is universally respected by his team mates, passionate about driving the Test team forward and extremely excited about the prospect of leading his country."

No surprise with Root & Stokes being named captain/vice.

Would be interesting if his batting form takes a hit with the added pressure. I don't think it will, he seems a relaxed person who will probably thrive on the responsibility like Smith & Kohli have.

It'll be a real test. The likes Of Kohli, ABD, Smith and Williamson got better after taking on the role.

Anyone see the way the last Bdesh batsman got out? In this particular case it didn't matter but in general such a scenario seems a bit unfair on the batting team.
