Better.

Billy Starlake is going to be a limited overs pick for Australia very soon.

Amazing bounce off length.

Herath ?. Did he really have a solid year ?
47 wickets @13.7 in 5 tests vs Australia and Zimbabwe. Other 7 were in Eng tour while the SA test was not considered in Cricinfo list.

Must be a few days old. Azhar ended with 1200 @ 63.
Yeah, I think the Cricinfo lists came out before the conclusion of 1st test of SA-SL series and 2nd test of Aus-Pak series. Smith crossed 1000 runs too.
Ashwin's numbers are proper mental.
As mental as they are, I still find Kohli's 2016 numbers more mental. Avg of 75+ in tests, 90+ in ODIs and 100+ in T20s. Only player to feature in all 3 teams by Cricinfo

Renshaw has just guaranteed himself a spot on Australia's tour of India with a not out score of more than 150.

To think we were the number 1 test side only a few months ago!! Think this will be our 6th loss on the bounce.

Was always going to be a struggle in Australia but I expected a lot more from the bowlers. Yasir in particular has not had a good tour.

Sri Lanka bowled out for 110 in their first innings, 282 runs behind South Africa.
Why did the Saffa's not enforce the follow on? Is this the norm now?

Seems to be the norm now. Australia had a first innings lead of 300+ in the first innings against Pakistan in Brisbane, didn't enforce the follow on and nearly suffered one of the most humiliating defeats in their history. Teams seem to prefer to bat their opposition out of the game instead of running the risk of losing a match chasing a small fourth innings total after enforcing the follow on. Australia vs Pakistan would have been or after day three if Aus enforced the follow on, instead it was a white knuckle ride to victory.

I was thinking about that Brisbane game, thought other teams might have learned a lesson from that but I guess not.
I can understand the decision on sub continent wickets that fall apart on days four and five, get your batting done early while the pitch is still playable. But this Cape Town wicket could hold for six or seven days of cricket. I think the idea was to rest the bowlers for a bit. South Africa are playing the same four bowlers as the Port Elizabeth test and there was a short turnover between games.

It is combination of teams wanting to give bowlers rest and 'manage' them better (the last generation or two pacers laugh at the idea often) and that occasions of team doing comeback after big first inning deficit (not necessarily following on), have increased. They don't always win but end up making match much closer. So teams prefer to bat out the opposition and then chase win. If SL score 450 in 3rd innings somehow, SA will have some nerves chasing 150+ batting 4th. They essentially want to cut that scenario out even if SL scoring 450 in this match and SA not able to chase 150 are both very low probability events even individually.
Let's say or assume it is more down to keeping bowlers fresh, particularly if playing with 4 bowlers only.

South Africa and Australia are going to playa four test series in South Africa in March and April of 2018. Great to see a four test series take place, a proper test series at that. Aus will fancy their chances - haven't lost a series in South Africa since 1970.

Younus Kahn made a good ton today.

I hope that doesn't prolong his Test career. Fabulous player for Pakistan but he needs to go & we really need to reassess this squad.

I expect Misbah will also retire after this series is done (probably tomorrow)

I still can't believe how old Misbah is. Awesome player (as is Younus) but yeah Pakistan have some rebuilding to do. Do you think they have the players coming through?

I don't think they have, the likes of Babar Azam aren't really up to it. Pakistan will really suffer batting wise once they retire imo, batsmen like Mo Yousuf, Inzi, Younis and Misbah aren't being produced anymore.

Edit: they haven't even produced one good opener since the days of Anwar, the fact they have had to turn to a one dimensional slogger in Sharjeel shows how bad things have gone.

Honestly I don't know as I don't get to watch much of Pakistani cricket, but looking at the batting Sami Aslam & Babar struggled in Oz but they've shown glimpses of their talent & they're still very young. Sarfraz, Asad & Azhar are around 30 and they should be the 'experienced' players we build around. I don't like how we keep changing young players so often, it doesn't help their development or confidence.

We need a better balance to the side. The 3 seamers aren't the greatest we've had & Yasir's been smashed around a lot. An all-rounder would be fantastic if we found one.

There will always be talent in the side but we have to nurture that talent & be patient. Misbah has been a brilliant captain in difficult times, I hope we don't become a circus again.

Thanks gents. It's amazing how quickly fortunes change in cricket, Pakistan were no. 1 in tests six months ago and now look in need of a complete overhaul.

Even the likes of Yasir Shah and Azhar Ali who I liked the look of last year are the wrong side of 30 (though only just, they'll be good picks for a while yet). With the former picking up an injury just now, and as you say having struggled in Australia in any case, it looks like worrying times ahead. Then again things can switch round so quickly with any luck they'll find two or three payers and get back on track.

Looks like as feared the quotas have killed SA cricket.

Its been coming for a long time. Honestly dont blame the players. If performance and ability are not the most important criteria for selection, why should they stick around?

A good team from the sub continent can be made to look very average in Australia and South Africa with the wickets they prepare. Pakistan could quite easily win their next home series at a canter

True, and vice versa. Pakistan have Bangladesh and Sri Lanka visiting next, which on current form look promising for them. There's also the matter of the ICC Champions Trophy in Britain this summer, which will be a nice way of gauging teams' limited overs credentials.

Looks as big a problem with CSA being broke.

Abbott, I read, is signing at Hampshire for 100K a year. That's peanuts.

He should be earning that much even as a domestic player.

Kyle Abbott is a very good bowler. He needs to be playing international cricket. This Kolpak thing is becoming really bad for SA. They need to get rid of the quota thing. It has no place in professional sport.

David Warner is one of the, if not the, best at ramming home a first innings advantage in test cricket in a decade.
