Cricket

That took off after the rain delay. 88 in the last 10 overs. Pak should bat for 15-20 minutes after lunch and then declare.

Should get a full days play today at least.

Pakistan in a lovely position. Hopefully Azhar will get his 200 & we'll declare soon after that.

Not sure what the forecast is going forward but with all the rain already, this will probably be a draw. Still nice that we've carried a bit of momentum from the last game & we're not rolling over.

Mark Nicholas is in hospital again. Hoping he'll be fine but this is the second time this test he's been sent to hospital.

There is rain forecast tomorrow as well. Don't think there is enough time to win for either of them.

Fantastic bowling display from Vernon. He is amazing to watch in SA conditions. Still averages less than 20 in SA and overall 21.76.

Good atmosphere at the game today! That lovely over from Wahab Riaz's no-ball hattrick really got the crowd going  Too bad it's on the express train to a draw.

Wahab has lost all his rhythm today.

No balls galore

Today? He has always been like that. Such an overrated cricketer because of that one WC spell.

The only time he is handy in tests is when the ball is 65 overs old and reversing.

Brilliant batting from Warner. Draw still the likely result but there's an outside chance one side might win this now, although it will depend on the weather.

Agree with the above regarding Wahab. He is capable of brilliant spells but they are few and far between, and right now he is too inconsistent & unreliable for test cricket.

The balance of the side really could do with an all-rounder. Wahab or not, the 3 seam attack is not enough to take 20 wickets imo, especially if the spinner is being smashed around. I really wish we had an all-rounder, it's the one massive hole in what has become an otherwise very good/competitive test side.

Some pathetic bowling here. Doesn't seem to be rain around so Pak could be in trouble if Aus get a lead of 150.

It's sad to see how one sided most test matches are for the home side's nowadays with most countries being such poor travellers.

Tbf pak vs Aus wasn't as one sided if you consider the entire test. A bit more composer and pak could have won.

Even England was in a 50/50 position for at least 3 of the 5 tests vs India with 2 days to go. Their losses had nothing to do with being in India imo.

Away sides really do struggle to win tests though. Never mind series.

Other than South Africa that have made a habit of winning in Australia, it's rare to see away sides win. I'm not sure whether necessarily due to conditions or just poor mentality.

Some big selection conundrums for Australia heading into the Sydney test. Maddison, Wade and Lyon will be under the microscope. I think they'll all play in Sydney but all three won't go to India. Wade won't go to India as he's inadequate as a keeper, Maddinson hasn't done enough as things stand and Lyon will probably be selected by the skin of his teeth.

Smith with 1000+ runs in 2016, for the third year in a row. Legend.

Brilliant & consistent player. Never expected him to be this good when I saw him play for the first time. IIRC he was supposed to be a bowler who can bat a little bit, but his batting has really improved & he's one of the top batsmen in world cricket now.

Shame weather took so much time out of this game.

Our bowling strategy needs to change. Bowling has been our strength for so many years but this attack seems a bit toothless.

No Johnson, no party

Australia need to get Pattinson and Cummins fit

That will make our fast bowling something really good.

For spin we need Maxwell to be our number 6

What this series has shown for both sides is that having a 5th bowler is essential, especially in these conditions. Only 3 of the 8 bowlers in this game have gone at below 4 an over. Spinners are incapable of holding up one end which means the three seamers have to work like donkeys for most part of the day.

Would be typical if we collapsed & handed the aussies the win.

The economy rates of our bowlers

If this ends up a draw, Australia will end up 20 minutes short. I think Australia will win this though.

Pakistan being Pakistan. Amazing how they manage to pull off defeats from unlikeliest scenarios. Hilarious.

Australia win by an innings and 18 runs. A fanstastic victory for Australia who were the team that played like they wanted to win. Pakistan have again managed to lose a game they should never have lost like they did in the Sydney test of 2010.

A CAREER Test batting average of 60 after 50 Tests.

What sounds improbable - if not impossible - is well within reach for Steve Smith ahead of his 50th Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground next week.

No batsman since Don Bradman 68 years ago has managed to reach the 60/50 milestone. Indeed, only three batsmen in history have managed the feat - and Smith has already outscored two of them.

Smith’s average now sits at 60.63 after 90 innings. After finishing unbeaten on 165 against Pakistan on Friday, he must complete one of the following scenarios to attain the remarkable Test average of 60 through 50 Tests:

- A further 71 runs if dismissed twice,

- A further 11 runs if dismissed once,

- No further runs required if not dismissed.

Bradman and the English duo of Herbert Sutcliffe and Jack Hobbs are the only batsmen in Test history to have averaged 60 at the time of their 50th Test.

As it stands, Smith possesses the third highest average in the history of Test cricket among batsmen with a minimum of 3,000 runs.

Only Bradman (99.94) and Sutcliffe (60.73) have achieved a superior career average to Smith’s 60.63 with 3,000-plus Test runs.

Smith’s consistency must nonetheless be admired - he averages no worse than 41.16 against all Test opponents and in all Test countries

These are Steve Smith’s year-on-year Test returns:

2014: 1146 runs at 81.85

2015: 1474 runs at 73.70

2016: 1079 runs at 71. 93

Pakistan must have one of the worst records in Australia, must be up there with Bangladesh and Zimbabwe. Pathetic the way they lost.
