Cricket

Rod Marsh has stood down as Australia's chairman of selectors effective immediately. He was going to stand down next year, but resigned today effective immediately. Hope they go for Steve Waugh, Ricky Ponting or Chris Rogers as Marsh's successor. I feel somebody with a batting background is required and the three i have mentioned would be very good judges of temperament and character of cricketer. Jason Gillespie has been mentioned but i feel he might be more suited to head coaching aka taking over from Lehmann when he departs. Don't think ''boof'' will be around beyond the 2019 World Cup/Ashes summer in England.

So what does everyone make of this furor around Faf 'tampering' with the ball? Whilst it is technically probably against the rules, I find it worrying that the Aussie media have not reported on Warner's consistent bounce throw on the pitch of the ball to the keeper and being warned by the umpire. Instead they've focused on what the Saffers are doing with the ball all the time. A mint does not make Warner and other batsmen play nonsensical strokes.

I've not been following the series, beyond checking scorecards.

Are we back on mints being used to help reverse swing?

Ben Horne with the following:

ICC has been alerted to du Plessis footage and is investigating with view2possible charge. 5 days to make a call. Story on @telegraph_sport

Yep this. He was caught on camera putting his finger on a mint in his mouth and then rubbing the ball with it. He will probably get charged and be suspended though in my opinion it is a storm in a tea cup.

Okay.

It's something that really should've been taken seriously 11 years ago, when it first was talked about, I think.

One of those things that probably would've been, had it been Pakistan, rather than England (at the time).

Seems rather arbitrary to take issue with it now.

I'm sure other teams/players do this & have done so in the past. Didn't England use this tactic in the epic 2005 Ashes series? If you're caught, unlucky, but I doubt the ICC can stop everyone from breaking the rules & using the 'mint-tactic' to get an advantage - unless you ban mints!

Pretty damn sure we did, yes.

Can we not ban mints? I think I'm okay with banning mints.

Give the bowlers a break.

 you could but I think the ICC should focus on the more important stuff, like making Test cricket more competitive & preventing it's slow death.

Imo the ICC is shit. The DRS should've been mandatory on all Test teams years ago & issues like 'mint-gate' shouldn't even make the news. I know they're trying to be innovative (day-night Tests, improving ODIs) but they're too slow & reactive rather than proactive. And in a sport where you only have 10 major nations to manage, it shouldn't be that hard to do.

It's good to see JP Duminy back in form. He's an underrated batsman.

Has India agreed to DRS from now on? Or is it just a one time thing?

He's not really underrated. He's a bit shit. Other than the hundred he scored at Perth, a couple of years ago, I can't think of anything else he's done in test cricket.

Adam Voges suffers a concussion after being hit on the head with a Cameron Stevenson bouncer. Ruled out of the match

Hope he's ok but equally I hope they don't try to ban bouncers. Whilst injuries aren't nice, and unfortunately there have been fatalities from bouncers, it's a part of the game which should always remain in place - albeit with some safety restrictions (better helmets, limited number of bouncers in ODIs etc)

They surely can't ban bouncers? It's up to the teams, players and manufacturers to make sure the players are properly protected. The risks involved in cricket and bouncers in particular are miniscule compared to obviously boxing but also rugby and horse racing (note the serious injuries sustained by Freddy Tylicki recently).
Taking away bouncers and not giving the bowlers any licence to try and intimidate the batsman is not the way forward in my opinion.

those are already in place though? I dont think these have a solution other than banning bouncers. but banning bouncers effectively takes the game further away from the bowlers (already the game is pretty favourable to the batsmen). Its kind of a catch 22 situation.

De grandhomme with a beauty to get rid of Azhar. Fantastic tache too!!

Faf Du Plessis has been charged with ball tampering and if found guilty, will face a two test suspension. The South African captain has pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He should be found guilty, that footage is clear as day. I am more upset about Warners bounce throw to the keeper not being picked up on. @Stretch mentioned it earlier in the thread.

Rillee Roussouw is first in line to replace Faf. He has done well in ODI cricket and has been part of the test setup for a while. Excited to see how he gets on

He has a point, in the sense they didn't win because of this
But du Plessis should be in trouble - although, every team does it to some extent

Good morning session so far for Pakistan, bowlers just about keeping us in it. Hopefully we can restrict them to under 200.

All out for 200 :D Very good bowling.

Doubt our batsmen will have the patience or ability to survive in these conditions.

Kiwis will wrap up the easy win tonight.

Not having a warm up game wasn't helpful but I doubt it would've made any difference to the batting which always seems to collapse at the slightest hint of swing.

It's what happens when you go straight from the dead pitches of UAE to England or NZ. They'll get better in the next game.

I feel preparation makes a big difference and that lack of preparation is the main reason why all teams are awful travellers these days. I don't think it is a coincidence that Pakistan won the first test in England after arriving an entire month before the test, but that they are struggling big time in NZ with zero preparation arriving straight from a test on a dead wicket.

I know it's hard to make full preparations these days with busy schedules etc. but ideally all away teams should be playing two proper first class games against decent opposition to acclimatize to the conditions.

He's been charged for ball tampering before, only fair he's suspended this time. Anyhow, I think SA do it more than most other nations these days... As for chewing gum, sweets, jelly beans and what not; England won the Ashes thanks to sugary sweets, Atherton also admitted that he used chewing gum, and I've seen Dravid and Tendulkar apply such saliva to the ball. I don't have a beef with it - the game is far too batsman friendly anyway. But rules are rules I guess...
