Cricket

In terms of comeback victories this is right up there.

Being flogged in England and not winning a game, being bowled out cheaply first innings again to beating the world's best side (officially even if we all know they're little more than flat track bullies).

Mendis is a good find.

154 deliveries without a run... Wow.

I don't know about 'right up there.' I mean there have been instances of teams winning after follow-on and all.
A good number of games spring to mind similar to this game. A match India won vs Australia in 2004 on Mumbai dustbowl was similar although series was decided by then. India batting first had scored 100 odd. Australia got 100 runs lead. Then India scored 200 something in third and Australia lost by 15-20 runs. Recently in Sri Lanka only, Chandinal played a inning similar to Mendis's to win test match vs India. India won next 2 though.

Yeah this reminded me of our match recently. We dominated 3 or so days and still managed to lose. Although in that case Chandinal just slogged relentlessly. This was a top class knock by Mendis.

I think 'a good number' is pushing it.

Its the 14th lowest first innings total ever in a winning cause, and 6 of the lower ones happened in the 19th Century. India's was lower though you're right.

Add into that everything that was said about Sri Lanka going into the series, how they did in England, and how many bad days they've had in test cricket recently and its a seriously, seriously impressive win.

Ya first inning total was quite low in this case but I was thinking more from the similarity in difference between the first total innings total of teams. This was good comeback win and one not expected but purely in terms of absolute top comeback wins we have had some stunning ones over the years.

 England losing to PAK after bowling them out for 99 in 2012

Did Windies get confused & think this was a ODI??

Ashwin is very good.

I hope cricket never dies in the WI.

Late night in India, WI accent and even semi-decent cricket like we're seeing is just great to watch.

Pujara is one of the most overrated batsmen right now. Flat track bully.

Test cricket is dead there imo. But ODIs & T20s will keep the Windies interest going for a fair few years.

century for Rahane.. proper player.

Century in Australia, NZ, WI, England and a 96 in SA that was as good as a century.

That's a high quality start to a test career.

Death of a Gentleman is up on netflix worldwide.

I highly, highly recommend watching it.

I cant recollect this match but I do remember when Australia came to India after winning something like 17 tests in a row and hammered India in the first test. In the second test India was forced to follow on and VVS Laximan made 281 and India went on to win the test with a hattrick from Harbhajan. They followed it up with a victory in the next test to win the series 2-1.

Michael Clarke took 6 wickets in the second innings of that match for like 10 -11 runs. It was one the most pathetic pitches I have seen at Wankhede.

That was 2001 series. 2004 Australia won. By the time of the match I have mentioned, Australia had already won the series.

That's a high quality start to a test career.

8 consecutive test series where he's had at least one 90+ score. South Africa was his first tour (and also first proper series as he's played only 2 innings at home before that) and his streak started from Durban - SA, NZ, Eng, Aus, B'desh, SL, Ind (vs SA), WI. Centuries in 6 series with 96 at Durban and 98 at Fatullah.

That was the 2001 series when Aus were on longest winning streak and Steve Waugh was on the verge of conquering "final frontier". VVS and Dravid turned around the Kolkata test while India won the 3rd test in Chennai with 155/8 in 4th innings (VVS saving Ind's bacon again). Hayden and VVS had a great series. Kolkata test is also possibly when Aus started becoming wary of asking opposition to follow on. Since then I remember them batting the opposition out with huge run rates in 3rd innings rather than asking to follow on. Maybe that's confirmation bias speaking.

Aus finally won the 2004 series after winning in B'lore and Nagpur (on a green pitch) while rain played spoilsport for the Chennai test with the final day washed out (where Ind has a pretty good record). 4th test in Mumbai was just a face saving measure with BCCI providing a diabolical turning pitch where no one looked comfortable except VVS, who to be fair always did well against Aus. Don't remember Aus winning any test in Ind after that - 2-0, 2-0, 4-0 in 3 series.

6/9, his best figures. I think that was his first series and Clarke scored 150+ in B'lore on debut.

Ok. My bad. That 2001 win was one of India's most amazing series wins I think. Specially that 2nd test. Don't remember the 2004 series you are talking about. Then again, India lost that one so maybe thats why ;)

2003 in Australia was one of my favourite tours as an India fan (especially that generation of players). Ganguly 144 to start the tour, Dravid double and Laxman century (reverse Eden Gardens), Sehwag 195 (but Ponting did eve better), and finally Sachin 240 with India 700/7 declared in Waugh's farewell

Edit: Forgot about Agarkar turning into Wasim Akram for one innings
