Cricket

India finally win a test series abroad...well our neighbors, but still counts as an away series.

@anver What you think about the current Sri Lankan team? With the big wigs gone, you looked woefully out of depth against a mediocre Indian team. Any new and exciting players coming up? Or is Lankan cricket heading back the pre '96 era?

Come on! Our bowling attack haven't looked this good in past 2-3 years. The only thing that bothers me is our team managements fascination for Rohit.

Quite astonishing the level of re-jigging Kohli's done to keep Rohit in the team.

Used to be a fan of Rohit, but surely that's that.

That was the main concerning part of the SL series. Now 2 players have compromised just to get Rohit in the team. I feel this is going to keep on happening. Pujara won't play ODIs, ROhit will fail in tests or be average and then dazzle in some of the ODIs and based on that will keep his test place.

:) They did well. Would wait to shower plaudits on them as this was a very very ordinary Sri-Lankan team. The next series against the South Africans will be the real test.

Besides Rahane, Pujara, Ashwin and Murali, I don't really like anyone in this team. Gone are the days when we had mostly gentleman cricketers play for us. The on-field histrionics of some of these guys is really off-putting.

Mr. Bedi, who is one of the most honest assessors on Indian cricket and doesn't sugarcoat anything like the other BCCI lackeys, sums up my feeling in the article above.

Agree on the point that SA would be the real test. But Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka is a very good opposition even though they are bit weak right now. We dominated 90% of the series, barring 1 freak session in the 1st test it could have easily been 3-0

You are right that we dominated the series, but I wouldn't call the Sri Lankan team we faced a particularly strong opposition. Still, a win is a win and will give the team more confidence. The batting is coming along: Murali, Pujara, Kohli, Rahane are solid enough to form basis of another good Indian team. Shamaji, like you mentioned, is a mystery. If Ojha, or Samson in the future, can perform the wicketkeeper-batsmen role well, then we have a good core.

The bowling? Still a lot of question marks for me. Would like to see them perform like this in a series consistently against a good opposition before I even call them a functional unit. I think it's very ordinary.

Ryan Sidebottom took 3 wickets in the 1st over of the day including 2 former England openers Robson and Compton as Yorkshire bowled Middlesex out for 106.

Bresnan got Robson, but very impressive all the same. 5-18 over all and sealed the championship on Day 1.

One more Pakistani bowler's action reported. #BCCIConspiracy #Justice4Pak

That's a blessing in disguise more than anything else. He only got his wickets due to some rubbish batting by the Zims. Also his technique as an opening batsman is very bad. At least we won't be seeing him in the ODI series against England.

Big 3 can ban all the off-spinners they want but they've got nothing on Yasir Shah. :wenger:

tbf it is very difficult to find fault with a leg spinner's action :D

ICC quintuples prize money for women's tournaments up to 2023
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a five-fold increase in prize money for global women's competitions from 2016 to 2023.

The ICC board said the increase recognised the "improved standard and professionalism in women's cricket".

Teams will compete for total prize money of $4.4m (£2.9m) during the period, including a pool of $1m (£656,000) for the World Cup in 2017.

The ICC has also increased the prize money on offer in the men's game.

Among the increases, the board has doubled prize money to $1m for sides that top the ICC Test Championship table each year at the cut-off date of 1 April.

It means the total prize money for the top-ranked Test sides and for men's and women's ICC events from 2016-2023 will be $65m (£42.6m), which the ICC said was a 41% increase on the last eight-year cycle.

The governing body has also announced that it will send director Giles Clarke - the former chairman of the England and Wales Cricket Board - and chief executive David Richardson to meet with the International Olympic Committee next month.

Cricket has not been played at the Olympics since 1900 but earlier this year the MCC called for the T20 form of the game to become an Olympic sport.

Pleased to see the women's game and the men's test championship get a boost. Not really sure I see the point of T20 as an Olympic sport, though.

"Brendon McCullum, the New Zealand captain, has alleged that he was asked three times by Chris Cairns, his former team-mate and childhood "idol", to get involved in spot-fixing, but admitted he did not report the approach until three years later because "he didn't want it to be true"

Yeah I don't want to report it because I don't want it to be true. Poor from Baz.

Yeah I don't want to report it because I don't want it to be true. Poor from Baz.

I remember Siddhu saying something on similar lines in a sting operation by Tehelka on Kapil Dev. When you have looked up to someone in your life, it is difficult to go and report against them. Not saying that is right but can understand.

Really sad though. I used to like Cairns :(

Ya.. He seemed such a likable player..

Agree with TMH,sometime when dealing with our idols we give them the benefit of doubt..

What do you reckon any chance of England getting another 250 odd today, declaring with a lead of 100 and seeing if they can put a bit of fear into the Pakistanis?

That should be the plan.

However, the track is so flat even I could score a few runs. There's no reasonable chance of a result.

Zaheer Khan retires from international cricket, having took 311 wickets at an average of 32.94 in 92 Tests and 282 at 29.43 in 200 one-day internationals.

Absolute world class in his prime.

That was his ODI rating. I accidentally looked up mickey mouse ratings... His test rating is better though - 752 being his highest.

Aha, fair enough. Come to think of it, wasn't Swann #1 in the world about that time? I guess I'll look that one up myself  Oh how England could do with him right now.

Tests? Second place is highest rating but he was number 1 in One Dayers. Fantastic bowler.

Yeah #1 in ODIs in 2011, #1 spin bowler in tests but never #1 out right.

Wish the PCB and in particular Khan and Sethi would stop embarrassing themselves already. No point in going to India to hold any talks. If BCCI wants to play then UAE should be the venue for talks/play. If not then the world moves on as usual. Stop forcing the issue PCB.

So Sehwag has announced his retirement from international cricket as well as IPL today.. What a player he was for us!!

Apparently he is going to play in the Master's Champions league in Dubai..

There have been some good ODI innings, but for such an aggressive batsman, his test innings have been more special. The debut Hundred vs SA, 195 vs Australia at Melbourne and the 309 in Pakistan. He actually had a great time in Pakistan when we toured twice in last decade.

Sehwag was a fantastic player, I feel sometimes he doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Good luck to him in retirement.

The double against Sri Lanka in Galle was the best of the lot considering how clueless everyone else looked on that wicket.

Yes, absolutely. Murali and Mendis were ripping apart the legendary middle order match after match and Sehwag just destroyed them. He wasn't just batting on a different pitch, he was facing different bowlers. I also liked his comeback hundred vs Australia in the Harbhajan/Symonds/Bucnor series which saved the 4th test.

Can someone explain what ODI rules changed? Why are we no longer seeing 400 runs in an innings in India?
