This Barkley thread and the Ozil threads are examples of why think we should retire the term "free transfer". Because it makes it seem like that the transfer cost nothing and would hold zero risk. If we signed Barkley we would have to give him a contract that was probably long term and lucrative. There would be a lot of risk in signing him. And generally amazed that people think he would improve us.
Most on here were turning their nose up to James Rodriguez in the summer, don't think Barkley will satisfy the Caf geniuses.
Rather make a play for Draxler than do this if we'd intend on playing him as a 10. Far smarter player.
The James (Hames) and the Draxlers wouldnt want to play in England for various reasons. Barkley seems to be a more realistic option. Surely willbe an improvement on the 100k a week Lingard
That's not the point. There's loads of players that would be an improvement on Lingard. Signing Barkley means we forego signing someone better who plays the same position.
We need to be aiming higher than a player that is hardly setting the world on fire for a middle of the table club
Why? Well, because two players from a side that finished 6th doesnt mean they'll finish 6th again if they were to move.
In my honest opinion, yes. I honestly think he'd be more effective in the 10 position than Mkhitaryan.
But then, Barkley would be a better squad player than Lingard. Realistically, which world class player is dying to join United as of now

Also not sure why people keep comparing him to Lingard, a home grown squad player. Any signings need to improve the quality of the team not replace a squad player.
if Marco Silva ends up at Everton, I think he could stay tbh. I think Silva could definitely get him back to a level he should be playing at.
We already have Mctominay whose basically our version of Barkley. Don't want anymore mediocre players in the team.
I don't think he's our version of Barkley. He is more like Matic type.
If the question is who is a free english player that would be a marginal improvement over lingard, then yes... Then barkly will be the answer.
