How are other leagues looking? I'm not hearing of similar problems in Spain and Italy?
Omicron hasn't been around in mainland Europe as much as in the UK I think.

This appears to be a highly infectious variant, but not as dangerous to most people. All you can hope is if it morphs into another variant it gets weaker and weaker.Fair enough.
I can't see a scenario where this doesn't happen every year, unless we start treating it like another 'winter' illness. It's just the way it is unfortunately.
if you let it rip through society then it’s going to cripple the NHS, even if it is ‘less severe’Fair enough.

Yep, 2 doses of the vaccine are still meant to protect against severe illness. The issue is that it's so contagious all the people who might still end up in hospital (even vaccinated) will all end up in hospital at the same time. I imagine the Winter periods even pre-COVID were terrible for this occurrence from the flu.Fair enough.

Are the players being less cautious than they were last year?
It seems a lot more are contracting it this time around. The united squad seems to have been decimated by it.
They will have been, but society has become that way all round. I was just speaking to someone she and her husband went to Aintree races a couple of weeks back, they went in one of the bars, they left because it was rammed and not a mask in sight. I know someone who is a season ticket holder at OT and was horrified that nobody in the crowd was wearing a mask and felt really uncomfortable. Are the players being less cautious than they were last year?

I don't know if it's confirmed that Omicron is the mildest variant yet. I think it may be.
If that's the case and it means Covid is becoming less deadly but more transmissible in order to survive, then surely we have to reach a point where clubs just play through it? Everyone has had ample time and opportunity to be vaccinated, so if it hits them harder than others, so be it. Otherwise this will just happen every year.
Problem is that the way it's going we could be in lockdown by then.I'd rather postpone the PL until 8th Jan than it getting anymore worse and Government enforcing something like behind close doors.
The only problem with postponing it for 3/4 weeks is when do we catch up the games, the players barely get a rest between the end of this season and the beginning of the next because of the WC.
Exactly. It’s not as if we are going back into a better situation, it’ll just be like now but worse since Christmas is in the middle. Instead of calling games off in December it will be January. Pausing the league isn’t any good to anybodyYeah, I don't understand the logic behind this. Aren't the players vaccinated? Covid isn't going away anytime soon anyway. We can't just take a break every winter when it hits for the rest of our lives.
The WC is in November isn't it, but as I said earlier I am sure they are having the Nations League again this summer. There are too many people involved in PL,UEFA, FIFA and media who are thinking about themselves and not looking at the big picture.I'd rather postpone the PL until 8th Jan than it getting anymore worse and Government enforcing something like behind close doors.

Good question. I'd be inclined to say yes based on how everyone is being less cautious compared to this time last year.
Plus also the factor of Omicron being more contagious generally.
Yep it feels that way. Still seeing full crowds at games is a bit surprising to be honest. I know they've already cut crowds in other countries - surely that won't be continuing here again? They will have been, but society has become that way all round. I think over the next month things will get worse than better.
The old excuse of football is outside does not wash. The fans are milling around on the concourse, in pubs before games, in hospitality. Did nobody think this might cause a problem.Yep it feels that way. Still seeing full crowds at games is a bit surprising to be honest. Cases, cases, cases. Who gives a flying shit?

Also the presumption that there will be no lasting effects on some players.I mean, aside from people potentially dying and just looking at football, you wouldn't care if it meant United went 3 or 4 games without winning because they didn't have the best players available due to cases?

What stringent rules? We have players not even taking the vaccine so I’m struggling to think of anything they can implement.Well for one it will allow the new more stringent rules to be enforced. If we want football during the worst months of a peak then we're going to need footballers to take a lot more caution.
I wanted him to say Croydon so I can get offended

Hopefully postponing the games will prevent more spread and not inch us further towards the dreaded lockdown.Problem is that the way it's going we could be in lockdown by then.
Yeah I meant that if we postpone the PL for 3 weeks, then add it onto the end of the season, the season will end in June and the new season begins earlier than usual, so players won't get much rest and I cant see them being happy with that. The old excuse of football is outside does not wash. Anyone think we are getting close to the stage of the PL telling unvaccinated players they can't play...?

Nobody is going to agree to not seeing their family for 9 months of the year, the clubs aren’t miracle workers.
We just have to accept the situation imo. Everything else is just pie in the sky
This should have already happened... FFSAnyone think we are getting close to the stage of the PL telling unvaccinated players they can't play...?
Not sure the players will get much sympathy as people will look for someone to blame and they are an easy target.Yeah I meant that if we postpone the PL for 3 weeks, then add it onto the end of the season, the season will end in June and the new season begins earlier than usual, so players won't get much rest and I cant see them being happy with that.
They haven't done it because it would be seen as naming and shaming. It is their choice to not have it, even if most of us disagree with their choice. The fact that someone who has been fully vaccinated can spread it won't come into some folks head. A lot of cases will just be unlucky to be in the right place but with the wrong person. This should have already happened... FFS
Unfortunately I agree with you, not because you're wrong but because it'll be the players getting the brunt of it, which is morally wrong. Not sure the players will get much sympathy as people will look for someone to blame and they are an easy target.
Is it not on the clubs too? Unvaccinated players would still be mixing with the playing squad I'd imagine.Anyone think we are getting close to the stage of the PL telling unvaccinated players they can't play...?
