Hopefully Di Maria has a great tournament and restores confidence to himself.

Him, Valencia and Rojo. Anyone else from United?

I'm looking forward to watching Aranguiz of Chile. He's very Vidal like in terms of his stamina and ability at either end of the field, and in my opinion should be playing at a higher level than Internacional, with all due respect.

De Arrascaeta of Uruguay is also one to keep an eye on. He's only 20, and may not feature all that much but he's immensely talented, and was a real coup for Cruziero who will almost certainly sell him on for profit in the coming years.

Paraguay's squad looks weaker than I normally assume it is, as does Uruguay, who have a great central defense, Cavani up front and problems in between.

Colombia look pretty good. They need a deep midfielder who can link play, though. It's all dour DM's, unreliable Freddy Guarin or the option of playing James deep, Quintero as a 10 and trying to just dominate everyone and risk throttling your best player and being ripped apart on counters.

Why is Mexico missing the crux of the team that won against Brazil in the Olympics?

What happened to Guardado, Dos Santos and Chicharito?

I thought it was bizarre nobody bought him after the World Cup.

He looked a hell of a lot better than, just to take Prem teams, Ryan Mason or Ramires tend to in similar roles. Inter and a few other non-Juve Italian sides could desperately use some skill, power and pressing in midfield too.

Chicharito, Guardado, Dos Santos brothers, Herrera and Diego Reyes are all being rested for the Gold Cup.

Gold Cup?

There should probably just be a 16 team Tournament of the Americas (I think they're doing something like this for the centennial).

10 South American teams + 6 Concacaf teams (Always Mexico and the U.S, normally Jamaica, Honduras and then 2 others) and sure, there would be some blowouts in the group stages (4 groups of 4) but people would like seeing Brazil beat Canada or Panama 7-0 and then you have normal groups and an exciting quarter finals normally consisting of Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Uruguay, Mexico, the United States and one of Paraguay, Venezuela or Ecuador.

although i really like your idea i think that the problem with that would be the duration of the tournament. most european teams wont like to lend their players for that long

The tournament would be the same length with the format he proposed.
The problem is that CONCACAF are pretty happy with their 3.5 spots to the world cup and just having two different confederations in America means more tournaments hosted in the continent, too.

Sometimes you get one or two of the young home based talents called up for this and I was hoping Hector Villalba might get a chance for Argentina, but them and Brazil have went full strength. I always like this competition, there's a unique feel to it.

I think it's the same amount of games per team? 3 Group games, then 3 knockouts to win the final.

Falca... oh.

I think if Falcao had been fit for the WC then the team would've been built around him and James wouldn't have made the same impact as he did. Will be interesting to see how Colombia play with both James and Falcao.

"Manchester United's Antonio Valencia could miss the Copa America after undergoing surgery on Monday.

Valencia, 29, was called up to Ecuador's preliminary 30-man squad last week for the tournament in Chile, but posted two pictures on his Instagram account on Monday night with him recovering in a hospital bed.

The Daily Telegraph reports the surgery was needed to remove metal screws and pins in his left ankle, which were inserted during an operation in September 2010 after breaking his leg against Rangers in a Champions League match.

The paper suggests that the recovery period will see Valencia fit to start preseason training at United at the start of July, but miss the South America tournament which runs from June 11 to July 4.
"

No wonder he doesn't have a left foot.

Could miss? how do you expect him to recover for a tornament starting next week!!

What's the chances of a European team being invited to this? I've heard rumours of Spain and Portugal being invited one day.

I remember on an older FM, England were invited and won the damn thing

Copa America is probably by favourite continental tournament though, the games are great.

The last Copa might have been the worst football tournament in recent history though.

ohhhhh man, Argentinas attack is

Hope the United boys (including otemendi) have a good tournament can't see argentina losing tbh.

Spain was invited in 2011, but turned down the invitation due to too much activity, being world champions and Euro champions as well at the time.

Why would an European be invited?

I cant recall Valencia being last being injured unless you count a black eye

The last couple of tournaments have been extremely poor

Why not?

I thought the last one was poor. I enjoyed 2007 until it got to the quarter finals where it seemed every game was a hammering.

Argentina should walk this, they have much more quality than anyone else. Yet somehow you know they're going to make this a tough task. The quality of the coaches has been hurting the national team for ages. Their lack of belief in attacking football is holding them back.

-----------Tevez----------Aguero----------

Should make light work of this competition.

Unless they face Brazil. Brazil have the Indian sign over them. Brazil beat them recently thanks to Diego Tardelli ffs

What time are the games usually at? Don't have great deal planned during this period so I may just go all out and watch my first ever Copa America.

Really don't know why that is. This is the first Argentina generation in a long time that you can say is genuinely more gifted than their brazilian counterparts, yet when they play them they play like the inferior side from a talent perspective. IMO its a simple case of not utilising what you have to its fullest. After they got beat by germany in 2010 they seemed to go into a shell and preferred pragmatic football instead of the flashy, more attack based stuff that they should be using. Give this side to an offensive genius of Tele Santana's ilk then you'd see some of the best football we've ever witnessed.

We also have Dunga back in place of the clown Scolari. Not that I love him, but he does know how to bother Argentina with solid defense and fast breaks.

His results against them are : 3-0, 3-0, 0-0, 3-1, 2-0.

One of the 3-0 was the 2007 Copa America finals. Argentina had an even better roster, with prime Riquelme, Veron, Aimar, Messi and Tevez. We beat them with the mighty attacking trio of Julio Baptista, Robinho and Vagner Love

Still, they are the favorites ..

Why on earth would a team from the other side of the world be 'invited' to a regional tournament? Besides being pointless, it'd ruin international football and it's traditions.

Because there is always one team from outside South America who are invited to participate. Japan have played in it as have most of the big CONCACAF sides.

I was waiting for this. Have you forgotten a team from the other side of the world have played in this tournament? Japan have played in the Copa America and were scheduled to play this year too but withdrew. So why wouldn't a European nation be invited?

Apologies then mate. I've never followed this tournament closely, but I know no one is ever invited to the Euro's. Perhaps a bit ignorant of me.

However it still sounds stupid, on their part... it should strictly be regional!

Its mainly down to the lack of teams. They have to invite nations to fill up the 3 groups. The 2016 Copa America will be held in the USA, but that's some sort of merge with the Gold Cup I think.

Watch them struggle to break down teams and score in every single game because that's how they do it every time they play.
