Cop in America doing a bad job, again

Listen guys, those so called “kids” had bats in their hand earlier and they were swinging them hard. The sergeant had no way of knowing the bats were “left in the dugout” and obviously felt in danger. Completely justified. They brought in on themselves.
B- for effort

The goal of defending the police is to reduce exposure to harm and its a fairly niche position anyway. Cameras aren't confrontations as much as protection in case cops invent their own confrontation.

I don't see much evidence that US police see themselves as anything other than divine protectors who are above the law and deserving of unlimited support and authority.

that's why laws were just passed that you can't be within 8 feet of police using video cameras simply b/c it's a form of confrontation and invading personal space

Sad reality is that because of this (lack of) parenting, he’ll be very very lucky to just end up in jail, and not killed by someone on the street or the police.

I doubt that's why it was passed. Given the current political environment in America, I imagine it was passed to prevent someone recording police abusing their power.

Agreed. How long till we see cops walking up to and saying “within 8 feet, you’re under arrest” to stop filming.

100% it was this. Silly to think otherwise.

Perfect example that they have no proper training at all. They are not fit to carry guns, period.
A direct throwback to my previous point while I was using British SFOs as an example. If a cop can't be trained long or well enough, or if a cop can't pass regular and thorough evaluations for fitness of service, carrying a gun in service should be out of the question.

Denver police injure 5 bystanders in LoDo while shooting man who allegedly pointed gun at officers
Suspect shot by police, Jordan Waddy, 21, was arrested on suspicion of felony menacing

After witnessing an altercation involving Waddy and two other men outside Larimer Beer Hall, at 2012 Larimer St., one officer reported that Waddy grabbed at his waistband and said he “lifted up his hoody as though he was armed with a handgun,” according to the document.

Several officers approached Waddy, according to the probable cause statement, and he began walking away. An officer reported seeing Waddy reach into his waistband again “in a motion consistent with pulling out a firearm,” according to the document. One of the officers at that point said Waddy had a gun, according to the statement

So they thought he had a gun so just went wild and unloaded at him, shooting 5 bystanders in the process.

I mean for feck sake.

On an unrelated note I had the best burrito of my life in LoDo.

I'll be there in 2 weeks. What restaurant (I'll be in and out before the late night shenanigans happen)?

Illegal Pete’s, on 16th.

Have you been to Denver before? If not make sure you check out Terminal Bar at Union Station, the Old Fashioneds and Manhattan’s in there are superb, and also the Cruise Room (think that’s the name) at the Oxford Hotel.

If you’re after a fancier dining option, Guard & Grace was incredible.

For breakfast Snooze or Sam’s No.3 are both great.

How in the world can you shoot at 5 bystanders? That was just abysmal, and it's a miracle that no one has been killed. Regardless, those guys do not deserve to be anywhere near back on the job with guns any time soon.

Probably in the background of the suspect.

Thanks. I used to live in Denver (lived in Colorado from 1990-2001) but it's changed so much I hardly recognize it.

Police on those cities live on extreme stress because they get shot and killed all the time, they could have more police but that would be against the defunct agenda. I live in US for more than 30 years, I look Spanish but I'm Portuguese, stopped by police several times because I was speeding, stop sign, etc. Never harassed by them and by the time they arrive on my window I have my documents in my hand, speak with them respectfully and even if in the beginning they are a bit "aggressive" they change the tune, 2 times I forgot my wallet - driver's license and wasn't a problem I gave my name they checked on the computer if the car/truck was stolen and they let me go without a ticket. I was younger back them now I'm almost 60 and only got a ticket this year for passing a red light (was yellow to red) but I didn't make any issue and got the ticket. That's the problem with a lot of people, they screw up on the road and they get mad when police stop them, people need to be responsible for their acts.

Oh dear.

No disrespect, but this is not an absolution to the fact that the motto "To protect and serve" is supposed to mean something when a police officer is trained and signs the contract for the job.

I have been mentioning about the part several times in this thread, but I will double down every single time. Using a gun in service requires high levels of both mental and physical fitness because there is just not much of a way back if a mistake is made. And attaining high standards demand extensive training first and foremost. If a police officer can no longer meet such high standards, then going in service with a gun is a no-no for the same reason why the masses mostly want to keep guns away from unstable people. Besides, the way police budget is wasted in buying military-standard weaponry instead of revamping training processes is like building a 5-star hotel on quicksand.

Until the day when the USA begin to apply high standards seen in the likes of a number of European countries and Japan for training and service performance despite smaller budgets, no one should expect more confidence in police anytime soon.

They obviously feared for their lives as he ran in the opposite direction from them.

That’s murder, plain and simple.

Apparently had a gun, but damn…

They were there to investigate illegal gambling, they had no cause to shoot someone fleeing. I recently read about when police in the US are allowed to use lethal force and this incident is clearly not one of those circumstances. I would go as far as call this a crime commited by the police.
